To feel terrified after reading the prepping for Brexit threads?

LittleNapRefuser · 28/07/2018 20:26

I have genuinely cried real tears of fear after reading the threads on prepping for Brexit today. I have a toddler and right now I am terrified of what is to come and their future after all this.

I don't really have anyone to talk to about this in 'real life' because most people I know aren't reading the news or don't seem to care.

Should I be terrified? Should I be scared for my baby's future? Can anyone reassure me or offer me an alternative perspective on all this. I don't want to to put my head in the sand but I feel really afraid.

I wish Giles Coren would shut up. His wrinkly parents fed, clothed and gave him a very good education, along with opportunities that can only be dreamed of. How much will his inheritance be ?
Not all of us wrinklies are selfish bigots.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 28/07/2018 21:23

Doooooooooooomed

Ginorchoc · 28/07/2018 21:24

What was the millennium bug? I can’t remember but I was in my early twenties and living life and probably oblivious to anything around me.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 28/07/2018 21:25

frog Giles is a very clever, educated man

MedicinalGin · 28/07/2018 21:25

This is all so fucking ridiculous. I cannot believe that after all this time, the govt still haven’t worked out what brexit means and is now excercising all this brinkmanship and using us as part of their ‘no deal is better than a bad deal’ shite patter.

How dare they. The very idea that they are hinting at us having to stockpile food and medicine just because their badly designed referendum went unexpectedly makes my blood boil.

The Tories only did this to try and mop up the UKIP vote in southern England. Now, because they didn’t bother to include a clause about needing a supermajority, brexit loons can prattle on about the ‘will of the people’ being heard.

The whole thing is a fucking farce and I wait eagerly for Theresa to have to guts to stand up and actually call it thus.

In the meantime, I will be stockpiling wine, mint lindt chocolate, French cheese that is freezable, passata, pulses, tinned fruit and good coffee. All the lovely things that we import from abroad that we won’t be able to get anymore because of the big fat lies slapped on the side of that wretched fucking bus two years ago.

What a shower of shite this all is.

Quietrebel · 28/07/2018 21:26

I have said this before on other threads but this is the worst time to isolate ourselves from the continent as there are global challenges that are only best faced as part of a united bloc of nations

  1. climate change and resulting extreme weather will present huge challenges in the very near future (food, water)
  2. International instability and tensions among big powers (Russia, US, China)
  3. The digital economy & automation impacting jobs
All the really big stuff on he agenda for this century - unity or coordinated approach with close friends should be desirable, right? There's a storm brewing and we're leaving the harbour now?
ThinkingCat · 28/07/2018 21:26

All the computers were supposed to stop working on 1.1.00 (or similar) because it had supposedly been used as a default date in computer programmes (by people with very short-term imaginations presumably)

Tomorrowiscancelled · 28/07/2018 21:27

I don't actually know what's going on. I don't watch the news or read papers. I'm not on fb or anything. The only time I hear about Brexit is skimming past threads on the active list on here. Can someone tell me why are people talking about prepping/stockpiling? Is it necessary? Should I be doing it too? Do I need to prepresent in any other ways?

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 28/07/2018 21:27

Also frog the whole point of his article was that his mum surprised him. Jokes on us eh?

LuluJakey1 · 28/07/2018 21:28

You should not be scared- the Remainers want to scare people.

Remember:
If the whole of the EU refused to deal with us - which will never happen as we are a high user market for them- we have the whole of the rest of the world to deal with - America, Canada, South America, Africa, China, Japan, India and Pakistan, Russia, Australia, New Zealand and everywhere else.
We send 50% of our food production to the EU market. We can keep it if we have to for us.
We are self-sufficient in many things and world producers of others.
The government will ensure we do not run out of essential medications that we do not produce until they have new trade deals in place if it comes to it, same with oil and gas, petrol etc.

What is it you are worrying about? We are the 5th wealthiest economy on earth and a bigger exporter than importer. Stop being scared. If it makes you feel better build up a little supply of long lasting things like loo roll, tinned goods, baby milk or whatever between now and next March but you won't need it.

Metoodear · 28/07/2018 21:28

We’re all doomed we should make a death pact

First it will be an outbreak then mass panic
Will anyone think off the children

It’s a shame we’re not allowed guns like in the us then we could really be ready

Can anyone recommend hazmat suits you can never be to ready HmmConfused

MedicinalGin · 28/07/2018 21:28

Yes the millennium bug passed me by too. But I gather that it could have been catastrophic and only wasn’t because a lot of very clever computer people did a lot of clever preparation over many months to prevent it.

Quietrebel · 28/07/2018 21:28

Short-termism is a common affliction.

ThinkingCat · 28/07/2018 21:28

Computer says it was 31.12.99.

Efferlunt · 28/07/2018 21:28

Brexit = not as bad as the blitz/ww2 generally so therefore I should stop moaning about it?

Do you listen to yourselves?

Ginorchoc · 28/07/2018 21:28

Just googled it 😂

Metoodear · 28/07/2018 21:29

You reminded really sound unhinged and really need to seek help crying all night please see a gp

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 28/07/2018 21:29

tomorrow can I gently suggest that you watch the news, read a paper or at the very least tune in to LBC

BangingOn · 28/07/2018 21:30

Don’t be scared, it won’t change anything or help you. Do think about what you can do to take control and make yourself feel better.

Prepping doesn’t need to be extreme and doesn’t need to mean stockpiling. Have a small supply of non-perishable food is a sensible idea anyway, there are so many situations where it could come in handy- floods, snow, a power cut, even the whole house being struck down with flu for a week and unable to get to the shops.

One of my biggest fears is my child going cold and hungry, so I’m putting together a small amount of supplies to ensure he doesn’t, Brexit or no Brexit.

Crunchymum · 28/07/2018 21:31

Usually I wouldn't give it a second thought but both myself and my baby are on long term medication and even a remote chance that we can't get our medication, worries me.

Its an uncertain time.

keyboardkate · 28/07/2018 21:31

Just to mention to those who might think a crash out will be instantly solved by a WTO deal, that will not happen overnight.

Such deals have to be negotiated, and I don't give a gold star to current negotiations, so it's fasten the belts for the ride of our lives if we crash out.

WTO members are already expressing reservations about the quota to be given to UK under its rules (ex EU).

It is just all so fkn complicated and unnecessary, and will affect the mid/lower earning cohort of the population far more than it will affect the elites. Such absolute treachery to place at a once proud Nation's door.

I fail to see any positives re Brexit, well at least no one has managed to say it out straight and convince me! Jacob Rees Mogg thinks we will see the benefits fully in about fifty years. Huh.

Buy a couple of extras post Christmas every week, just one or two items. Sanpro, toilet paper, nappies and wipes, first aid kit stuff, and tins of things etc. choose two items each week for example.

It is not necessary to be a true prepper but it's no harm to get a few non perishables in. Since perishables will probably be the first things to be held up in arriving here.

MedicinalGin · 28/07/2018 21:32

lulujakey I really want to believe this but trade deals with all these countries take years to establish- who are we meant to sell our stuff to in the meantime?
And all the food that we usually export that we are to keep for ourselves- who will buy it here and how will those producers continue to earn enough money to produce it? And what about all the processing that has to happen to those foods that usually takes place abroad or with ingredients sourced from abroad?

Not trying to start a bun fight but genuinely don’t understand these things.

UglyCathKidstonBag · 28/07/2018 21:32

Unless you have daily need of a European-sourced medicine only available from one place, I’m not sure what you are imagining.

Do you realise how many thousands of people are in this exact situation?
Do you realise those of us working in healthcare are being told that no one at NHS England or CCGs know what the hell is going on and where we will source vital products, devices, drugs and equipment from or indeed how to stockpile sensitive product for a prolonged period.
The NHS, much like the supermarkets works on a “just in time” basis. During the recent snow, many hospitals found themselves up shit creek for a number of reasons, I dread to think what will happen with a prolonged period of supply issues.

WhoAteAllthePercyPigs · 28/07/2018 21:33

It's ok people! @lulujakey1 has kindly deigned to explain to us stupid 'remoaners' why it's all going to be ok. Back in your boxes now, blindfolds back on, Tories have it all in hand.. .

Metoodear · 28/07/2018 21:33

MedicinalGin Or it just never was going to be a awful as the news said it was going to be the media thrive off doomsday Senero

They would be out of a fucking job if it was 22 constant and nothing to see Hmm
