To feel terrified after reading the prepping for Brexit threads?

LittleNapRefuser · 28/07/2018 20:26

I have genuinely cried real tears of fear after reading the threads on prepping for Brexit today. I have a toddler and right now I am terrified of what is to come and their future after all this.

I don't really have anyone to talk to about this in 'real life' because most people I know aren't reading the news or don't seem to care.

Should I be terrified? Should I be scared for my baby's future? Can anyone reassure me or offer me an alternative perspective on all this. I don't want to to put my head in the sand but I feel really afraid.

Imagine living in London in 1940. For 57 out of 58 nights bombs rained down. You would emerge from your shelter, presumably with little or no sleep, to find out whether or not you still had a home and which of your friends, relatives and neighbours were dead

Brexit, however it goes... will not be that bad

They should have stuck that message on the side of the bus!

Disquieted1 · 28/07/2018 23:03

So the Germans won't want us to buy BMW, Mercedes or Volkswagen cars any more; the French won't want us to buy their wine and cheese; the Italians won't want us to buy their pizza and pasta.....
OK, I can live with that. What most concerns me though is the reaction from Denmark.
I predict a national Lego shortage. Time to stock up.

Justanotherlurker · 28/07/2018 23:04

Some tins of tuna perhaps

Don't say that, I'm stocking them up for my brexit survival box, just working on the price.

Remember tuna is something to be weary about since Fukushima and not worth bothering about... I wouldn't stock up on that if I was you

AllIHaveToDo · 28/07/2018 23:05

@Disquieted1 oh they will. But on a completely different tariff. I mean they still export their cars all over the globe. Doesn't mean it won't be costly to export them here though.

Charolais · 28/07/2018 23:05

lol - I was on that prepper thread telling people to stockpile guns!

Sorry but thing are going to be very tough. Burying your head in the sand is immature and irresponsible.

Our lives will change! And those with ability to adapt will fare better I feel.

abilockhart · 28/07/2018 23:07

Don't worry.

Genuises such as LuluJakey1 and lindalee will sort it out.

mirialis · 28/07/2018 23:07

I suggest dried pasta and tinned tomatoes. Powdered milk. Some tins of tuna perhaps. Then you know you won't starve, and you will always be able to eat through those stocks when the initial kerfuffle dies down

No need to fill rooms full of the stuff. Just enough for two meals a day for, say, 6 months

Gosh, how little space do you think 365 meals' worth of pasta, tinned tomatoes, tinned tuna and powdered milk will take up - sounds like quite a lot to me!

Justanotherlurker · 28/07/2018 23:08

OK, I can live with that. What most concerns me though is the reaction from Denmark.
I predict a national Lego shortage.

Well we all know lego is what our construction industry will have to resort to using since we will be sent to the dark ages in march.

I can’t believe that someone posted about not living in 1940 with bombs etc!
Is that supposed to be a bloody joke?!

bellinisurge · 28/07/2018 23:11

Ok I'll post it all again before I go to bed :
I'm sorry if this is scary for you. I've been contributing to a lot of these threads trying to encourage people to keep it simple and just look at planning for 3 days worth of stuff- imagine you are snowed in for three days. Think of what you would need from morning to night in the way of meals, drinks, snacks and treats. And make sure you have stuff like toothpaste in.
We have a fragile food distribution system called Just in Time. Supermarkets don't hold a lot of stocks and are vulnerable to the slightest hiccup be it weather related or whatever. They eventually right themselves but it takes time.
I'm a prepper, I know this stuff.
The likelihood of power and water supply problems are much less.
Having some extra put by gives you more control if it gets tricky at the supermarket.
I have kids too.

Glaciferous · 28/07/2018 23:11

The scariest thing about these threads is the sheer number of Brexit supporters who seem literally unable to take in any facts or just don't want to. People not understanding the 'Just in Time' system and not reading anything about it and assuming someone somewhere will change the entire system to suit us. People saying 'oh, if I have to pay 10p extra for a loaf or some cheese, that's OK' when in fact the shortages are likely to be such that there will be rampant price rises and real shortages. People saying 'it's going to be perfectly fine, why are you worrying' when our actual government is clearly now worried about food and medicine shortages.

I have a reasonable store cupboard but will certainly be adding some extras to my shop over the coming months and have already started. Pasta, rice, oil, dried beans, tins of vegetables inc tomatoes, frozen chopped onions/veg/prawns, tins of meat/fish, cereal, long life milk, bread flour, dried herbs, salt and pepper etc etc. All these things can be sourced relatively cheaply . Two extra things a week between now and then could make a real difference to your personal comfort.

If it's not needed because our government finally manage to cobble together some kind of deal then great! It will all get eaten in the end anyway.

Glaciferous · 28/07/2018 23:13

Toothpaste etc is something I hadn't considered actually! Good call, @bellinisurge. That, loo roll, shampoo and soap are going on the list.

bellinisurge · 28/07/2018 23:15

@Glaciferous - I'm not saying people should by 20 tubes of toothpaste, I'm saying Sod's law can apply to stuff like that- you run out just when you need it.Grin

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 28/07/2018 23:15

It’s bloody scary

bellinisurge · 28/07/2018 23:16

@Aintnothingbutaheartache - control the stuff you can control like having a bit extra put by. Don't need to go mad or break your budget. Store what you eat and don't forget the odd treat to cheer you up.

GirlsBlouse17 · 28/07/2018 23:16

I think the naivety that came from the leave campaign was that a wave of positivity and optimism would come about if the leave campaign won and that the country would come together to make Brexit a success. The reality is that negativity and pessimism have dominated since then and so we will fail and it will be a disaster.

AllIHaveToDo · 28/07/2018 23:17

Well for those that want to prep it's a great idea so crack on. I intend to. Nothing wrong with being prepared, it's not like it's gonna get wasted.

For those that don't give a crap either way then that's your lookout.

mirialis · 28/07/2018 23:18

the Italians won't want us to buy their pizza

Wow - are UK people on MN actually buying pizzas from Italy??

BakedBeans47 · 28/07/2018 23:19

Not sure this is a healthy approach to life

Not life, just Brexit. It’s unlikely to happen I guess as the outcomes won’t be discriminating but I do hope the people who voted for it in the hope of some sort of panacea end up worse off. It’ll be worth it to have “taken back control” surely?

Glaciferous · 28/07/2018 23:19

@bellinisurge, don't worry, I'm not panicking! I will just buy an extra tube or two and make sure it's put aside rather than in the bathroom so we have it if needed. I know what you mean. It would absolutely be the case that we suddenly found there was only a scraping in the tube!

Justanotherlurker · 28/07/2018 23:20

The scariest thing about these threads is the sheer number of Brexit supporters who seem literally unable to take in any facts or just don't want to.

I'm an ardent remainer and the scariest thing for me is the hyperbole and scaremongering that goes on these threads from people talking with a perceived superior knowledge because they have recently discovered the term JIT

Found pen knife with a fire starter kit to add to Brexit Survival Box

mirialis · 28/07/2018 23:21

negativity and pessimism have dominated since then and so we will fail and it will be a disaster

The cause and effect relationship you are implying is incorrect. Don't try to pass the buck for your decision to vote for something that is proving to be disastrous.

Travelledtheworld · 28/07/2018 23:21

It's vegetables and salads crops that will be in short supply. The ones that are imported from Spain and the Netherlands. So start growing your own and get used to eating lots of onions and cabbage.
