To think it's not hot at all

I'm here in a blanket in the south west in a 3 story Edwardian and it's cloudy.

I've felt other heatwaves but this one doesn't even register tbh

As usual SE England = UK. (and apparently Scotland at the moment!)

And East Anglia. And the Midlands. And parts of Yorkshire. North West.

Pretty close to breaking the record for the hottest day anywhere in the UK since records began. The driest summer for the UK since 1961 (though it feels neither hot nor dry in London this evening). It was the warmest June on record in Wales. Record temperatures in Glasgow and Belfast. Hosepipe bans, crop failures, a prediction of 1000 excess deaths due to the heat. That’s the big picture.

That chip on your shoulder must be awfully heavy.

Cockadoodledooo · 27/07/2018 23:30

The heat I can cope with but the humidity of the last couple of days is really getting to me. Polyester uniform is a killer.
I was in a patient's house last week and she had her heating on Shock

It'll be pissing down tomorrow in the SE as we're going camping HmmGrin

Gwenhwyfar · 27/07/2018 23:31

Jassy - the fact that it's been hotter overall doesn't mean we have a heatwave NOW all over the UK. It's been hot where I am and the grass has turned yellow, BUT it's not hot at the moment so you can't way there's a heatwave all over the UK, which is what people keep saying.

Gwenhwyfar · 27/07/2018 23:32

"It was the warmest June on record in Wales." - Doesn't change the fact that it's going to be a miserable, cold 17 degrees in Gwent tomorrow.

JassyRadlett · 27/07/2018 23:43

BUT it's not hot at the moment so you can't way there's a heatwave all over the UK, which is what people keep saying.

I think you’ve added a sneaky couple of words there that no one else has said to try to stand up your shaky story. Smile

A single day does not a heatwave make. (Quite literally.) Make yourself a hot cup of tea and hope for a warmer tomorrow.

Sarahrellyboo1987 · 27/07/2018 23:54

Inside my house is 33/34 degrees. Outside is 31. My daughter has epilepsy and the effects it’s having in her are awful. I’ve had about 10 hours sleep over in the past 7 because of her nocturnal seizures. It’s exhausting. I hate the heat and wish it would sod off!

SnorkFavour · 28/07/2018 00:10

I'm not really sure why there's so much vitriol directed towards the OP. All she (he?) said was that she couldn't understand the fuss as it's not that hot where she is. I understood the mention of the house to be because the type of building affects heat/insulation significantly. She probably expected people to either agree that it's a load of media hype or to disagree, maybe giving temperature examples.

Why can't you all just disagree politely? Like this - it's boiling here in the SE OP, 39 in my car today and between 26-38 for days in my house. We've had no rain for weeks either.

OP, you should realise that on Mumsnet it's generally only acceptable to mention your living accommodation/income/holidays/car if you're living in a tiny house or flat with no disposable income and holiday at Butlins in the UK preferably driving a very old and tiny vehicle. Anything even marginally above that will provoke envy of unprecedented proportions and you'll be flayed alive. But I'm sure you've discovered that now Grin

FWIW I don't see a boast anywhere in your threads, just a question about the weather because you're not experiencing such extreme heat, followed by general discussion. 1m Brits visited Dubai in 2016 and it's apparently increasing by 10% a year, meaning that 1 in 60 of us went 2 years ago in one year alone.

JassyRadlett · 28/07/2018 00:14

I think it was all quite civil until the bit back on page 1 where OP said it wasn’t really hot, it was just that those types in the SE couldn’t deal with a few extra degrees.

For some reason the tone changed after that. Can’t imagine why. Smile

Btljalrrl08 · 28/07/2018 01:00

Here in Birmingham we haven’t had any rain since the floods in May half term, that is two months without any rain, you can’t say that is normal! Very hot here, the kids can’t sleep, I can’t sleep, no one is eating so everyone is getting cranky. Luckily we go camping soon in Dorset so we are hoping it’s a bit cooler there, or at least a sea breeze to make it feel cooler.

keffie12 · 28/07/2018 01:45

North Yorkshire here: oh it's hot in and outside the house. No rain for months until a storm last night and on/off today. It has still been humid though is cooler tonight though I do have the fan on in my bedroom full blast

Jozxyqk · 28/07/2018 04:32

Thunderstorms here the last 2 evenings. Otherwise extremely warm & humid. Last evening's one was particularly spectacular, with hailstones up to the size of golf balls, & a few even bigger. People running for cover & hiding in bus shelters etc. Actually quite cold while it was going on & we were in summer stuff & didn't even have a jumper between us to keep DD warm.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 28/07/2018 04:59

bit back on page 1 where OP said it wasn’treallyhot, it was just that those types in the SE couldn’t deal with a few extra degrees

I was coming on to.say exactly that, i'm south, probably the northerly bit of the south, but Most definately not south east given the severn crossing is about 45 minutes away, but 17 degrees that would be lovely. We had a rain storm thunder and everything about 2 weeks ago it lasted about 20 minutes, all the hills around here (and there's a lot) are yellow, im actally findimg it sad, the distruction its starting to cause.
But still after people from different areas of the country pointed out that no no it really was that hot and lucky them for having a lovely cool house, aparently it was just SE and it was southern softies that couldnt cope.

That annoyed me, not only does it insult people in SE but it implies that the rest of the country arent sufgering and dont have a heat wave - we very much do

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 28/07/2018 05:05

conversation about the weather and saying it wasn't universal that the whole country is struggling

But it is!!!! And OP your response of oh please and a biscuit to the mention of the wild fires is disgusting.

Whats not universal thank god is your lack of understanding and emoathy

BradleyPooper · 28/07/2018 05:27

I live in Texas, it was 39C here which is fairly normal for July. I love this temperature but my house was built for it, we have air con and a pool. Even my car has super fierce air con.

When I visit family in the SE of England in summer and its upper 20s, I find it stifling. The houses contain so much carpet, curtains and insulation (we have wooden floors and plantation shutters) that they retain heat. The heat in the U.K. is so different to higher temps in different countries where buildings were made to allow for it.

Teacher22 · 28/07/2018 06:59

Last week I experienced 31 degrees in Buckinghamshire and 21 in Devon and the difference was incredible. A 31 degree temperature is very hot for this country. The grass is burnt brown and washing is drying in a hour. I am sure it is more comfortable elsewhere.

SoyDora · 28/07/2018 07:43

As usual SE England = UK

But that’s not true either. We started our day in the East Midlands, it was hot there. We then drove to Norfolk. Arrived mid afternoon and it was 38 degrees when we arrived. A lot of the UK was hot yesterday, not just the SE.

Member745520 · 28/07/2018 08:37

I like JassyRadlett. I've learned a lot from her.

Just hoping we are spared a repeat of the winter we experienced in 1962/63...

Dungeondragon15 · 28/07/2018 08:43

It's definitely not just hot in the SE. It hasn't rained in the West Midlands for weeks and it has been extremely hot. The storms just seem to miss us. As other's have said, houses here are made to retain heat, few buildings have air conditioning and and therefore it is very hard to stay cool once temperatures reach the 30s.

Littlenic73 · 28/07/2018 09:27

It isn't particularly hot here, we had about 27° yesterday but i know that the nurses station on one of our hospital wards will be like an oven due to its stupid glass funnel ceiling.I saw advice to avoid alcohol and sex in this heat and it made me think that seems odd as it's not really as hot as the average club 18-30 holiday and nobody goes on those to avoid sex or alcohol!

Littlenic73 · 28/07/2018 09:30

Having said that it is a different kind of heat. Some friends from Israel came to stay years ago and they complained about the heat here, in the low 20s, as it was quite humid, they are used to much higher temperatures in the desert there.

AimlesslyPurposeful · 28/07/2018 11:13

Yes, a friend from Zimbabwe said the same LittleNic.
Much hotter there but it’s a “dry heat” and isn’t uncomfortable.

pigsDOfly · 28/07/2018 12:34

It's been raining here from last night and the temperature has dropped considerably, there's a lovely cool wind, the sun keeps popping in and out and it's heavenly.

Actually managed to take the dog to the park mid morning for a good run.

Why can't it stay like this

Shockers · 28/07/2018 14:45

I’m at a festival in Wales. It’s chucking it down and blowing a gale.

But when it stops doing either of those, the sun is really hot!

WickedLazy · 28/07/2018 16:01

It started raining here (Co.Down), at about 2am last night, and hasn't stopped since. There's thunder, lightening and flooding now. Most people spoke to today seem relieved to see it, it does feel a lot colder now.
