To think it's not hot at all

I'm here in a blanket in the south west in a 3 story Edwardian and it's cloudy.

I've felt other heatwaves but this one doesn't even register tbh

It’s too hot! Fans by a window are pointless as all that would do is to circulate the hot air. I’ve the windows and blinds closed and it seems to be helping - a little. Not looking forward to tge tube this morning.

GabsAlot · 27/07/2018 08:49

did u hear the delightful news @parker231 that by 2030 they will have air con down there

how nice of them

exLtEveDallas · 27/07/2018 08:55

We've been at our caravan in the SW for a week. The temp hasn't dropped below 25 at night. We've all been bitten stupid by mozzies because we are leaving the windows open all night.

Walked the dog at 10pm last night and she was still panting like a steam train after about 15 mins. Thankfully the tide was far in enough for her to go in. Took her again this morning at 7 and she spent an hour in the water. She's now drying out in front of the tower fan - which is a miracle considering she was scared of it a month ago.

I love the heat usually - we go to Egypt in August and we lived in Cyprus for a couple of years. This feels different though, a lot more humid so more uncomfortable. Britain just doesn't have the infrastructure for prolonged hot/humid weather.

MrsFezziwig · 27/07/2018 09:15

Woken to the sound of a thunderstorm and my lawn has turned pale green overnight. Smile Having said that, my coolest room is still 26 and the outside temperature is forecast for 30 this afternoon.

MrsFezziwig · 27/07/2018 09:19

Hope is in sight, though - just seen that a 10 degree drop is forecast for Saturday, so by tomorrow we’ll all be on here moaning about how cold we are (and OP will be turfing polar bears out of her loft). Grin

ParsnipsAreTheDevil · 27/07/2018 09:20

I'm in SE London and nearly melted taking DS to nursery just now, but it's a chilly 18 degrees in my living room with the portable air con. Might have to put on a sweatshirt!!!!!!!! Bliss!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PuppyMonkey · 27/07/2018 09:23

We’ve had two massive storms lasting ooh about 30 seconds overnight and this morning.Shock

TomaszIsMineBitch · 27/07/2018 10:37

Im Envy of those of you who have had storms. We havent even has a small shower of rain (weeps)

LittleLionMansMummy · 27/07/2018 10:41

We were promised storms. The sun is shining, the kids bedrooms are roasting again and not even the tiniest spit of rain so far. It's fucking hot, as my poor 20mo dd will tell you - she was tossing and turning, lying awake in a soggy mess for 2 hours after she went to bed last night. I've refrained from complaining until now, but she needs a little respite - it's far easier for adults to cope.

CookPassBabtridge · 27/07/2018 10:43

In West Yorkshire I woke up to very loud thunder and cool air, was amazing.. then some heavy rain. Now back to sun...
There is more promised later. There must be a storm because the temp drops from 30c today to 20c tomorrow.

Want2bSupermum · 27/07/2018 10:56

I had my friend check in on my Dad. It was 28 not 18. He is dehydrated and she was worried he has a UTI so stayed overnight with him.

NYC has been 29ish at night and 32-35 during the day. It's been fine as long as the air is moving. The high rise buildings have aircon but they need to because you can't open the windows. We live in a row home so have windows opened with fans in them and all rooms have ceiling fans. The other night I was a bit cold walking the dog!

Parker231 · 27/07/2018 11:47

The ‘waiting for the thunderstorm ‘ is the main topic in the offIce this morning although we’re flying to see my parents in Belgium this evening and it’s forecast to be 36 there this weekend.

This extreme heatwave seems to be in many countries- global warming

QuestionableMouse · 27/07/2018 11:48

Big thunderstorm here with lots of rain earlier.

It's now gone back to dry and really humid.

beeefcake · 27/07/2018 11:49

32 here in Kent, can I come and stay with you until this is over????

HellonHeels · 27/07/2018 11:52

Good for you OP! Enjoy your Edwardian house.

WTF?!

AimlesslyPurposeful · 27/07/2018 11:55

Being on holiday in a hot country and being at home during a prolonged heatwave aren’t comparable.

In the UK everything is built to keep heat in! Having air con at home here isn’t standard and most places of work don’t have it either.

On holiday if you fancy a bit of respite from the heat you just pop inside somewhere with air con. Have a sit down, a cool drink and cool down. How can you do that here?
“Boss. I’m too hot to do my job. I’m off to find a three storey Edwardian building to cool off in. Yes I know you’re all here too sweltering in this tiny furnace we once called the office but I’m off. Laterrzz my sweaty colleagues!”

Even if you’re not working, general day to day tasks are a bastard in this heat. The floors still need vacuuming, the bathrooms don’t become self cleaning once we hit 25°c. Children don’t start amusing themselves because their parents are melting. Food needs preparing, laundry has to be done, the garden needs tending and the dogs still need their walks.

THIS IS NOT LIKE BEING IN A HOT COUNTRY ON HOLIDAY!

Anyone that says “But you seek out the heat when you go on holiday” can just do one.

beeefcake · 27/07/2018 11:55

@HellonHeels I don't know what OP is talking about- I am sweltering inside my Victorian mansion!!!!!!

WickedLazy · 27/07/2018 12:00

I'm a cleaner and hoovering in this heat is brutal.

HellonHeels · 27/07/2018 12:03

@beeefcake that is where you went wrong - it it were an Edwardian mansion you'd be pleasantly cool now, even a little chilly Grin

WickedLazy · 27/07/2018 12:05

I did some bar work at the start of the heatwave, and opening the dishwasher was even worse than hoovering, the blast of steam hitting you is actually sickening for a few secs, awful when it's busy and you've to open it every few mins 😷 I don't know how builders etc are coping. The guys that maintain the trees around here, had to resort to tops off and high viz jackets over bare chests.

WickedLazy · 27/07/2018 12:06

*high viz vests

catx1606 · 27/07/2018 12:09

OP, you really need to come out of your little world don't you. We are experiencing a global heatwave. Yes it's hotter than this in Dubai but they have this weather on a regular basis, they are built for it, they are used to it and have built their lives to accommodate it. We haven't because we just don't get temperatures like we're having at the moment. It's going to heat 37 in some areas. Just because you're not feeling hot doesn't mean no one else is and doesn't mean the media is whipping up a media frenzy. As for the health warnings, there are vulnerable groups who will suffer more in this weather. I think you have put this post on to brag about your home. The last time we have a summer like this was back in 1976, doesn't really give us the chance to get used to it doesn't it

beeefcake · 27/07/2018 12:15

@HellonHeels ahhhh rats!!!!! You're right!!!!

beeefcake · 27/07/2018 12:17

@WickedLazy they have now ceased work on upgrading the motorway here because of the heat!! Feel so so sorry for construction workers

Piggywaspushed · 27/07/2018 13:14

harumph... the construction workers on my estate are starting work at 6.30am... I wish they'd decide it was too hot.
