Aibu MNHQ does not want us to debate brexit on the main boards

Just that.

Someone shared a link to the Independent's Final Say petition. The most important debate this nation can have right now is on the final brexit deal. This was promptly buried in the 'petitions' section.
This isn't any old petition. It concerns all mums/ citizens. If someone wants to share it with the wider MN community, they should be able to.

It's a petition. So it goes in petitions.

Loads of people think the or petition is one that all women/mners/mothers etc need to see.

Other mners complain about the other boards being full of petition and brexit chat. Which is why they have their own areas

Of course, I'm not saying other issues aren't worth attention. But this one is a really crucial one as it will influence everything else: from the resources available to the nhs to the quality of food on your plate. That s all.

Could you link to the thread here?

Shortstuff08 · 26/07/2018 10:35

Totally missing the point.

Petitions have their own section because before, they clogged the other boards and people got fed up. Mn listened to feedback, and created a petition board.

Same for Brexit.

Shockingly, I come here for light relief. I use the real world to keep up with politics and more serious issues.

I don't want to discuss brexit, when I get a bit of time to come on here. Doesn't mean I am kept in a box. It's means that's not what I want to use mn for.

Pebblespony · 26/07/2018 10:36

It doesn't affect international mums either. Not everyone on the site is directly affected by Brexit.

Shortstuff, really? Light relief? So I suppose all the threads about domestic abuse, bullying, body issues, divorce etc should be removed too?

Thanks for starting this @quietrebel. Do you think this one would get moved to petitions if I added the petition link?

Baumederose · 26/07/2018 10:42

What's brexit?

Quietrebel · 26/07/2018 10:43

And it's not just relevant to the uk. Other nationalities would do well to look at what's happening as we are talking about the very nature of democracy and parliamentary systems. It IS relevant. Plus I do think other EU countries will be affected if it goes badly, albeit less than here.

OP posts:
Quietrebel · 26/07/2018 10:44

MissSusan unfortunately I think it would be moved very quickly.

Thedutchwife · 26/07/2018 10:44

Your bonkers if you think we actually have a say!

MissSusanSays · 26/07/2018 10:45

Ah well. If anyone wants to Google it The Independent has a petition up on Change.org for a final vote on the Brexit deal.

CrochetBelle · 26/07/2018 10:47

I wish they'd be so keen to move other threads to the right section - the WAG threads irrationally get right on my tits.

Quietrebel · 26/07/2018 10:47

Thedutchwife, maybe or maybe not. That's the whole point. If you don't participate in the debate at all then you're sure NOT to have a say. Let's take advantage of the freedom we have while we have it.

OP posts:
Confusedbeetle · 26/07/2018 10:50

I avoid all discussions on Brexit now because most people are very strident about their particular stance. People who normally never talk politics are falling out. The whole thing has become so polarised and I am weary of all the anger. Because it is such a big subject it needs its own place where people can debate it as they like. Those of us that think it has been done to death can leave it alone. I haven't seen the petition but I am quite shocked how un independent the Independant is!

runningkeenster · 26/07/2018 10:54

Why do things need to be removed? Threads have titles so if you are not interested in the content, presumably you don't open the thread?

Or is that far too obvious and sensible? I don't read every thread by any means.

BIWI · 26/07/2018 10:56

If people post on it, then it pops up in Active conversations. So what's the problem?

There are no 'main boards' only the one that people post on. So post on the board that has the petition on it. You/we can still have any debate about it that you like!

Quietrebel · 26/07/2018 10:57

Avoiding it means in fact agreeing with whatever scenario comes to pass. Have you really no opinion on the matter? If so fair enough, but a lot of us do have one -on both sides of the fence.
What shocks you about the Independent? What about the Express, the Mail or Telegraph?

OP posts:
MissSusanSays · 26/07/2018 11:00

There are popular boards. Which is why I posted my thread in AIBU. Who here regularly goes on the petitions board?

The newer mods are a bit inflexible on the rules. There seems to be no sympathy with posters. I miss OliviaMumsnet.

WhollyFather · 26/07/2018 11:01

Should the petitions topic be renamed 'petitions nobody thinks are important'?

The Independent has been a rabidly anti-Brexit mouthpiece since the referendum was announced. It failed as a newspaper and is now just a website, owned by a Russian oligarch who I'm sure has Britain's best interests at heart.

There does not need to be, and will not be, what amounts to a second referendum. If May manages to cobble together a BRINO deal which she thinks the EU will accept and that she can force through Parliament despite the vocal opposition of at least 60% of British voters, then Parliament will consider the proposed deal. If they accept it, all hell will break loose. If they don't, we move to trading with EU members on WTO terms on 30th March next year, which will be fine despite all the propaganda.

Shortstuff08 · 26/07/2018 11:03

That's not what I said at all. Plus the petition wasn't removed. It was put in the right section. I avoid the brexit section because it just goes round in circles. I give the bereavement section a miss as I find it upsetting.

It's right that things should have their own section. Especially since it's what lots of mners want and asked for.
