Aibu MNHQ does not want us to debate brexit on the main boards

Just that.

Someone shared a link to the Independent's Final Say petition. The most important debate this nation can have right now is on the final brexit deal. This was promptly buried in the 'petitions' section.
This isn't any old petition. It concerns all mums/ citizens. If someone wants to share it with the wider MN community, they should be able to.

Shortstuff, I hear you but AIBU Is a bit of a catch all section with all kinds of questions and debates that you also find in other sections. It seems only the B word is off limits. That's the point I was trying to make.

Wholly father

despite the vocal opposition of at least 60% of British voters

Where are you getting this figure?

Shortstuff08 · 26/07/2018 11:16

Yes it is. And its Aibu. At 1 point the whole first page of Aibu was full of brexit debates. All saying the same thing. No op thought they were unreasonable, they all just wanted to keep having the same debate, over and over.

People got pissed off and asked for it's own section. Mn isn't here to provide a platform for politic views. it's a chat site. It will do things based on member feedback. Where there are opposing views usually the most popular view will win.

There's no obligation for mn to help you promote you political stand point.

BIWI · 26/07/2018 11:17

It's because people get irritated about themes that they see popping up with spurious AIBU titles. (And I don't just mean Brexit!). There are different topics for a reason, but people insist on posting in AIBU 'for the traffic' which makes it a self-fulfilling prophecy!

Funny how it's Leavers who don't want to discuss Brexit because it's going tits up as predicted

Quietrebel · 26/07/2018 11:36

The purpose of the initial thread I was referring to (posting a link to the final say petition) was actually entirely neutral. It's not about promoting a political view as such, it's about a final say. No more no less.
As for insults etc. Maybe this happened on other threads but there many polite respectful posters out there. They should still be able to share their views in a constructive considerate manner. Not everyone is into insults and put-downs.

I’d like some consistency from MN. If Brexit threads get shifted to the brexit forum then any threads in aibu/chat about political parties or MPs or leaders should get shifted to the politics section. Why is the Trump thread not in politics?

There is no one and no organisation in the UK that won't be adversely affected by Brexit. The adverse effects are already evident - we are all worse off already than we would have been if there had been no Referendum, as our economy is the slowest growing in Europe.
Anyone who is already struggling financially or has health difficulties should at this point be very very worried. Jobs are at risk and though (reportedly) the Government is stockpiling medications, there may well be a shortage of the essential medicines you need, as well as all but basic foodstuffs.

InfiniteSheldon · 26/07/2018 12:06

So this is a TAAT?

All petitions get moved, regardless of subject matter. Can I hazard a guess that the thread was along the lines of ‘AIBU to ask you to sign this petition’?

If it were a discussion of the petition, and the impact it might have, then I imagine it may not have been moved.

It was a petition. It was posted in the wrong section so mumsnet moved it to the right section.

Dont really get your problem.

louise987 · 26/07/2018 12:14

Yes YABU! Fair enough it moved super quick which may have limited views but topics are there for a reason. Plus anything with enough comments on gets onto the main activity board.
Personally Brexit is a topic I'd go elsewhere to read about anyway, no disservice to Mumsnet but there are many sites specialising on the topic.
I'm bored of Brexit taking up my mn chat board

Seasawride · 26/07/2018 12:15

On a personal note the trump thread is mind numbing. He’s an idiot! Everyone gets that. Move on.

borntobequiet · 26/07/2018 12:24

The Trump threads have been the subject of a academic paper as an example of careful, excellent research and collation of facts and evidence carried out by what are often called citizen journalists. They are essential reading for anyone who is interested in the situation in the United States - a situation that greatly impacts us in the UK.

tommytimmy · 26/07/2018 12:33

I am having to hide them, I have an anxiety disorder and this subject is very triggering for me just now, I feel on the verge of relapse. I know AIBU is the busiest board but there are sections specifically for this and they should be put there otherwise there may as well be only one section for everything.

I am having to hide threads, as soon as I see one about Brexit (even without ready any of it) I have an instant anxious response. I know this is my problem not anyone elses, I just wanted to vent a bit as I've not spoken to anyone about it before.

Quietrebel · 26/07/2018 12:57

Tommy, very sorry that this is triggering for you. I have a friend who can't bear to discuss this for similar reasons- even without a diagnosed disorder.
But it does need debating in the open... And let's hope it'll get sorted. Stay positive!

tommytimmy · 26/07/2018 13:05

Quietrebel thank you. It's just so hard, some people are very dramatic about it, like doomsday is upon us. The nature of my anxiety means I get obsessive thinking and tend to catastrophize, I've already been taking more of my medication to try and ease the anxiety.

Anyway, i'll not derail anymore, but will have to hide this thread too (no offence).

rainbowsandsmiles · 26/07/2018 13:09

YABU, there's a perfectly good board to post all about Brexit on here.
Just like if you want to post all about pets, there's a pet board.

Also a good way to keep women talking about really important things like what colour shoes or handbag, or whether their children playing outside annoys the neighbours. Keeps us all in our boxes, doesn't it?

Oh, give over. Nobody's forcing women to talk about their handbags or the colour of their shoes, don't be so ridiculous! Hmm
Women can talk about Brexit as much as they like. As mentioned there's a perfectly good board for that for people to talk about it to their hearts content.

Quietrebel · 26/07/2018 13:15

rainbow , right, where no one sees it apart from committed posters. You see it's like the difference between Love Island and some late night talk show on a small cable channel.

OP posts:
rainbowsandsmiles · 26/07/2018 13:21

It's a petition. So it'll have gone in the petition bit with the others.
As someone upthread pointed out, everyone thinks their petition is the most important ever.
If everyone started posting their petition links, it'd clog up the feed.

Shortstuff08 · 26/07/2018 13:26

You see it's like the difference between Love Island and some late night talk show on a small cable channel.

Except Love Island producers pay for a premium slot and late night cable shows don't pay a lot or are free.

This is a free website. For parents to chat. For those that want to debate brexit, there is a section. Those looking for style advice can go to that section.

Aibu is a mixed section, but putting a vague 'am I being unreasona me to leave this petition here' pissed people off.

Mn has no obligation to let you do anything and works on feedback from it's members. People got fed up of people posting their petition and clogging other boards, because they feel it's the most important petition.

If they let a brexit one stand, then they will have to let them all. There are other ways for you to promote your petition. Mn is not the be all and end all.
