Who's watching?
I love George.

He does still exist in the present. That's true but I've no idea about people who are famous now. I'm old.

Who are these 'most' of which you speak speakout? What do you mean by 'lightweight'?

I grew up in the 80s and was not aware of it.

derxa · 25/07/2018 22:10

Sparkling Thanks. You know what I mean.

I really enjoyed the programme,I thought he came across well and the Irish history was really interesting.

LuluJakey1 · 25/07/2018 22:15

I don't know much about him. Why is he considered 'a person of substance'?

Sparklingbrook · 25/07/2018 22:15

Yes Derxa Culture Club v One Direction. No comparison.

HolyMountain · 25/07/2018 22:17

He was considered by most to be a lightweight and an idiot even in his heyday.

Please put some facts behind this, I’d find it really interesting actually.

category12 · 25/07/2018 22:17

'person of substance abuse'? Grin

DontMindMeRollsEyes · 25/07/2018 22:19

Gino di campo went to prison for stealing Paul Young's guitar.

Sparklingbrook · 25/07/2018 22:20

I do think pop stars and groups from the 80s were more interesting. Writing their own songs and playing instruments and the way they got together usually had a good story attached.
The bands seemed to have more characters and something to say.

Sparklingbrook · 25/07/2018 22:21

I cannot stand Gino D'Campo even without him burgling Paul Young's house. Grin

But we of a Celtic origin understand him. And those of us who lived through the 70s, 80s etc understand.

That really makes o sense. Could you explain?

LuluJakey1 · 25/07/2018 22:25

He struck me as unusual - I didn't sense much empathy from him; some interest but not empathy. You could tell he is close to and loves his mum. I thought he was intelligent; intuitively rather than academically.
There were times I found him disingenuous for example looking at the photo of his great grand parents and a great uncle and he kept 'mistaking' or misunderstanding who was married to who but infact he was making the point he could not tell which of them was a woman. His aunt kept telling him and he was deliberately misunderstandng so he could make that point.

I also found the 3 or 4 Buddhist prayers a bit affected. He could have done it privately if he wanted to do it. I would feel the same about anyone praying in any religion.
I didn't warm to him. I think he'd be quite wearing -too much about himself.
I am surprised he is regarded as a 'person of substance'.

CurlsandCurves · 25/07/2018 22:27

Most of us were young and stupid at times. Not all of us did it in the public eye. Not all of us did it with the music industry telling you you’re the mutts nuts and introducing you to every drug known to man.

Yes, he was an idiot, a druggie and a criminal. His music was and still is amazing. He’s now several years sober and a better person for it. The best outcome is to learn and grow and that’s what he seems to have done.

Anyhoo, it was a great programme. As a person of Irish descent it never ceases to amaze me how much gets brushed under the carpet and not talked about. I know family members who kept so much to themselves, they’d never have told what happened to them as kids. As a ‘good Catholic family’ you just didn’t.

Sparklingbrook · 25/07/2018 22:28

I think the filming was done and the BBC decided what went into the programme and what didn't. I bet loads of the filming wasn't used.

I can't imagine how long these take to make and a lot of the research is obviously done off camera and by other people before the sleb even arrives. They have to make sure it's going to be interesting telly.

SilverPartyShoes · 25/07/2018 22:29

He’s a former self confessed drug addict, and been to prison for false imprisonment and assault, I’m surprised he’s on the BBC at all really.
I dont know why people imagine they know someone from the image created fro them by PR people on television.

SilverPartyShoes · 25/07/2018 22:30

Apart from that, its interesting to see people’s ancestors

Sparklingbrook · 25/07/2018 22:31

Didn't Leslie Grantham kill somebody? And yet he was on the BBC for years.

SilverPartyShoes · 25/07/2018 22:31

But not more so because it was George O’Dowd, just because the premise of the programme is interesting

category12 · 25/07/2018 22:32

Most of us were young and stupid at times. It was 2008 when he was convicted for falsely imprisoning and assaulting a chap - so he'd have been 47. Hmm

SilverPartyShoes · 25/07/2018 22:32

I believe so, and other famous people, American film star who I cant remember the name of...
Must all have friends in high places !

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 25/07/2018 22:33

Killingy someone was fine, wanking to another consenting adults on a webcam wasn't.

But that's the BBC for you.

TemptressofWaikiki · 25/07/2018 22:33

He is a narcissist and thug, a serial sex offender who got off on preying on vulnerable young male sex workers with addiction issues, sadistically assaulted and kept them imprisoned, completely terrorising them. His actual convictions were only the tip of the iceberg and he got off very lightly. I met a victim and there were many warnings circulated about him not to answer his outcall bookings, due to his disgusting behaviour. He is adept at pretending to be a decent human being but that is just an empty facade.

MyOtherProfile · 25/07/2018 22:35

But we of a Celtic origin understand him. And those of us who lived through the 70s, 80s etc understand.
I'm of Celtic origin and lived through the 70s and 80s but I still don't understand the business with the male prostitute.

And he really wasn't considered a person of substance back in the day, nor was culture club any less empty pop than one direction.

Glad to get that off my chest.

Sparklingbrook · 25/07/2018 22:36

Oh so it's a thread for getting stuff off your chest?
