People telling you what their dogs are ‘saying’

Lighthearted thread but still, I think I have unreasonable levels of anger about this Grin

Most recent example being by a lake relaxing with friends when couple with three dogs come along, we are chatting to the woman of the couple while the dogs are jumping in the lake, playing with their toys etc.

Man of the couple is providing loud commentary of what the dogs are doing by means of

“Oooo he says! He says, Mum it’s cold in here!! Ooo I’m getting out now, he says, where’s that ball, he says!”

“I didn’t expect it to be that cold he says!!”

I know IABU but I wanted to drown him

Maybe he’s got dog telepathy?

Grumpyrealist77 · 20/07/2018 07:41
Grin My wife talks to her cats. Pretty similar but not as bad as dog whisperer..?
EmmalinaC · 20/07/2018 07:41

We speak for our dogs all the time. They have distinct voices: one is French and slightly camp, the other is a Londoner who swears a lot. It amuses us immensely.

But I don't expect other people to find it amusing!

Lipsticktraces · 20/07/2018 07:45

It’s a dog owner thing. We are all officially batshit due to our furry companions winding their affections around our brains.

My own dog has a very gruff, deep voice. This is despite her being a very pretty, fluffy shih tzuGrin

LEMtheoriginal · 20/07/2018 07:48

I talk to dogs and answer for them. And cats. And birds....we can have very meaningfull chats. Better than with most humans

chestylarue52 · 20/07/2018 07:50

I do talk to my cat. But if I had a friend over and my cat was sitting on her knee I wouldn’t provide incessant ‘ohh she says it’s lovely and comfortable on your knee, oh she likes your shirt, oh she says, I am comfortable here’ - massive cringe.

OP posts:
wellBeehivedWoman · 20/07/2018 07:50

DH and I do this with our cats, they have different voices too! One is sarcastic and distainful and the other is neurotic.

We don't do it in front of other people though Grin

Mummyschnauzer · 20/07/2018 07:53

He is a totally normal dog owner our dog is a posh little thing who thinks she should have been one of the queens corgis. Somehow her paperwork got mixed up! You have to ask OP why you can’t hear them dogs speaking!

Barbaro · 20/07/2018 07:54

That's a pet owner thing. Grin I do this for my horse and cats.

chestylarue52 · 20/07/2018 07:54

I think part of it also was I was having a conversation with the woman and the man kept saying “oh Mum! He says, “ etc. Like when people talk to you ‘through’ their babies ‘what’s that naughty auntie chesty doing’ etc.

OP posts:
likeacrow · 20/07/2018 07:55

It is not a pet owner thing. I don't do this for my cat. Dog people are strange...

Slartybartfast · 20/07/2018 07:55

he was just an irritating man by the sound of things op

chestylarue52 · 20/07/2018 07:56

He was definitely an irritating man.

My name should state it all.!!!

Yes I talk for my dogs all the time I have four,
3 Japanese akita X German shepherd and one 12 week old Siberian husky the latest addition after we lost the other 3 dogs mum (actual birth mum)

Like emmalinaC each of my dogs has own distinct "voice" to match their personality and the "pharses" we say on their behalf match those personalities too.....
Yes I am crazy about my dogs and you probably want to drown me too after spending 30 seconds in my company haha!
Ultimately I'd rather be called a crazy dog lady Than a People person! Xx

SluttyButty · 20/07/2018 07:59

Sorry but we do this with our idiot hound. However our commentary usually contains lots of swear words and ends up with us snorting and laughing, I can be quite childish sometimes.

You would not have been unreasonable though to drown him for referring to owners as mum and dad. I want to punch people for doing that. You're an owner, you are not a mum or dad to a cat or dog 🙄

chestylarue52 · 20/07/2018 08:00

Crazydoglady - do you inflict it on non consenting bystanders 😂

OP posts:
Thymelord · 20/07/2018 08:00

I had a great conversation with my dog this morning, not realising "Fit Spaniel Walking Man" (FSWM) was just behind me. Now I'm going to have scuppered my chances with FSWM because he heard me saying "don't lick the lamppost, oh for god's sake now you're licking wee you disgusting animal" and dog answering (in an Irish accent), "but I'm just checking my pee-mails". That'll teach me.

Wiggler1 · 20/07/2018 08:04

It’s funny, I don’t do this when I’m on my own with my dogs/horses but I do with other people. People are generally so oblivious to animal behaviour I feel I have to narrate the conversations I’m having with them. I realise that makes me sound batshit, but animals talk too!

CherryPavlova · 20/07/2018 08:07

Very sadly, and only in the house, we do hold dog conversations. “Mmmn smells nice daddy” ( I never called my husband daddy when addressing him when the children were young). “What’s dat you eating Daddy, I like steak too “.

“Homemade pizza you say, I hadn’t even noticed” (See photo)
We don’t inflict on strangers and do try to reign it in but it just happens when he pulls certain faces.

People telling you what their dogs are ‘saying’
AsAProfessionalFekko · 20/07/2018 08:07

'Pee mails' 😆

I'm going to steal that line

Ihavenoideaatall · 20/07/2018 08:08

Thymelord - I hope FSWM snorted, I would Grin ps is the spaniel fit or the man? 😄

CrazyDogLady87 · 20/07/2018 08:09

lipsticktraces, you are correct , a true dog person is utterly bat shit,

LEMtheoriginal me too I have much better conversations with my dogs too! I pretty much have zero tolerance for humans, and even less for idiots.

Likeacrow. Again you are correct us dog people are strange but we are proud!! Haha, if I had cats I would do the same, any animal really, maybe I'm not a crazy dog lady may be in hurts a strange crazy lady! Grin I still don't like humans, (we are too complicated) animals are way cooler,

Love this post and everyone's responses Wink

Ooopsijustsnarted · 20/07/2018 08:11

Oh my god @CherryPavlova. Your dog is gorgeous. 😍😍😍

chestylarue52 · 20/07/2018 08:15

Just to clarify, like with sex, religion, and jazz music, what people choose to do when not in earshot of me is very much their own choice, it’s when I get dragged into it that I object!

OP posts:
CrazyDogLady87 · 20/07/2018 08:15

chestylarue52 ABSOLUTELY! just makes me even more crazy! Haha and the bystanders face is just amazing!

Thymelord this is amazing!

Wiggler1 do it on your own too you'll be amazed what they come out with

CherryPavlova I love your dog!
