Pranges are supposed to be good. But I imagine the OP needs something rather more immediate!!

Im currently eating lots of fruit to keep regular. Two new medications each with a listed side effect of constipation

Annabelle4 · 18/07/2018 13:18

A strong coffee always works for me

2tired2iron · 18/07/2018 13:20

Apples are not good for constipation, infact they help to ‘bulk up’ , as do bananas rice and bread.

Drink plenty of fluids, water, prune or pear juice.
Coffee
Or worst case senario a cigarette usually does the trick.

dorisdog · 18/07/2018 13:27

Glycerine suppositories. (I had such horrible constipation after giving birth for nearly a week!!) They saved my life!

More recently, when I had it for a few days - apples, apple juice, (all fruit really) beans, lentils. Drink a ton of water. Cut out eggs, cheese and meat...

Strong coffee to get you moving.

I'd recommend a fag, expect that's probably a no-no. (Seem to remember in my smoking days that worked well ;-) )

dorisdog · 18/07/2018 13:28

Oh, yeah, PRUNES and prune juice :-)

5foot5 · 18/07/2018 13:31

You don't need to take anything.

Just have a low foot stool, or similar, in the bathroom with you. Sit on the toilet with your feet on the stool and just relax and wait. Take a book in with you if you get bored.

Always works for me.

I think the explanation I read many years ago was that the human body was designed to defecate squatting on the ground not perched on a porcelain throne with you lags hanging down. Feet on footstool is as close as you can get to replicating that.

dorisdog · 18/07/2018 13:32

Actually, thinking about what 2tired2iron says above. That's probably true about apples, bread etc. It's good for prevention, but not for immediate relief.

Glycerine suppositories and prune juice for salvaging the situation.

Sorry for the excessive posting - I just know what you're going through and how bloody awful it is!

5foot5 · 18/07/2018 13:32

Should have said - have the stool right in front of you so your knees are up in front of you

sureitsgrand · 18/07/2018 13:32

Smoking never made me go when I did so. I've never been very regular but this is ridiculous. I guess I may need to up water intake. I'm now full of coffee and fruit- not sure I can fit much water in but will try!!

twoshedsjackson · 18/07/2018 13:33

I agree about the coffee. Also, sugar free sweets have a warning on the side of the packet; it is there for a reason...........

RiverTam · 18/07/2018 13:33

Agree that you need a footstool in the bathroom with you - your knees need to be higher than your bum.

TheCakeCrusader · 18/07/2018 13:34

Fybogel sachet drinks- can be taken more longer term for increased fibre intake and constipation issues. As recommended by my doctor and hospital consultant. I take one a day ( morning) and it helps regularity!

sureitsgrand · 18/07/2018 13:36

Ok have a sick baby here on my own today, so when I get him to sleep I will try the old knees up trick.

It's horrible I'm really uncomfortable now and it's affecting my mood . Ironically DS has a tummy bug so is shitting through the eye of needle.... thanks for all the replies.

Plenty of fluids of any form really, if it's compacted / hard so painful to pass glycerine suppositories are very good as the soften every thing, as well as fluids prune juice and prunes and digs both fresh and dried are great as are raspberries

sureitsgrand · 18/07/2018 13:39

I found lactulose, according to Google it's safe to take when bf, I may throw that in on top of everything else!

OP posts:
fruitbrewhaha · 18/07/2018 13:39

Inulin powder.

TheSandgroper · 18/07/2018 13:40

I ate fenugreek to support my bf. Capsules first then teaspoons of the seeds. Worked like a charm on my boobs and found it worked like a charm on my insides, too.

The word you want is mucilaginous so I googled it www.thepaleomom.com/mucilaginous-fiber-the-good-the-bad-and-the-gooey/ and also en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mucilage.

Deathraystare · 18/07/2018 13:40

For my mum (who practically needed a bomb to shift anything) it was mangoes. For me - I don't often have the problem but let's say I had no trouble going after eating a fry up or chocolate so I guess fat was the answer! Oh and cherries. I eat them all in one sitting, mind.

lilicat · 18/07/2018 13:42

A pal of mine swears by psyllium.

A long term cure is veganism, vegans shit a lot. :)

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 18/07/2018 13:43

Beans on wholemeal toast. I had chronic constipation when I was pregnant with DS2, I was in to be induced, had the aforementioned, and did a crap the size of Jupiter.

ToadOfSadness · 18/07/2018 13:44

Olive oil.
Baked beans, the entire tin.

ToadOfSadness · 18/07/2018 13:48

Please note, mentioned above that glycerine suppositories soften everything, they actually don't soften anything. They do not melt, they simply make things feel a bit fuller and stimulate movement.

Micra Lax would help but you would probably need to order it from a chemist. It is a gloopy substance in a syringe. That DOES soften things.

Lactulose draws water from elsewhere into the bowel, so make sure you drink plenty.

Gastonimo · 18/07/2018 13:52

I'm breastfeeding DS who's 6 months and have been taking Macrogol laxitives on prescription the whole time.
Get yourself some anusol suppositories to help lubricates when things do start moving. I feel your pain!

Strugglingtodomybest · 18/07/2018 13:54

I've only ever been constipated to the point of pain once and the GP told me to stir 1/2 a teaspoon of magnesium sulphate powder into a cup of tea. Man, did that work fast Grin.

BlueBug45 · 18/07/2018 13:54

Dried fruit especially apricots and drink some water.

Other things can work but it depends on you so coffee doesn't work for me but bananas work for me and a few other people. Most veg, baked beans and pulses do eventually work but not within an hour or two.
