A question for those who think playing with toy guns is okay?

Would you also approve of your child playing pretend drug taking? Or pretend rape?

I am not okay with my two DSs playing with guns. I asked my friend if she would be okay with her little boy pretending to inject heroine or snort cocaine and she said that of course she wouldn't.

I just don't get why people think it's okay to allow their child to pretend to kill someone but are utterly disgusted at this.

Anyone care to explain?

FFS Completely different things!

21jumpstreet · 16/07/2018 20:32

🙄

Lockheart · 16/07/2018 20:32

Are you seriously comparing an Olympic sport (and one in which I myself have several trophies) to rape?

You’d have had a field day with me, I got my first air pistol when I was ten.

WineAndTiramisu · 16/07/2018 20:33

Definitely different things...!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 16/07/2018 20:33

Oh right, I thought it was going to be a serious question.

TruJay · 16/07/2018 20:34

WOW!

Luckymummy22 · 16/07/2018 20:34

You would be horrified by my DS.
He’s a normal 3 year old boy who loves going around shooting things.
He will turn anything into a toy gun. Just like anything can become a train.

He’s doing what his dad, uncles, grandfathers etc did before him.

DD too loves to play with guns. As did I when I was a kid.

The difference is that they do not live in a country where guns are the norm. So it is normal child’s play.

politicalcorrectnessisgreat · 16/07/2018 20:34

But what is more acceptable about killing someone than taking drugs? I actually don't get it.

I have never seen toy drug taking sets on the shelves of a toyshop. What have I missed? Have Nerf branched out?

You can pretend to kill someone with your bare hands if you want, or that Spock pinch my DB used to do. Grin

BlessYourCottonSocks · 16/07/2018 20:36

If you like. My DH won an Olympic medal for shooting when he was younger. I had no problems with our DC playing cowboys and indians or learning to shoot under their father's guidance when they were slightly older.

But hey, thanks for equating him with a rapist or drug addict.

PeckhamPauline · 16/07/2018 20:37

I had a collection of toy water pistols as a child. I wasn't pretending to kill someone when I played with them—I was squirting them with water!

SneakyGremlins · 16/07/2018 20:38

Don't worry OP, they'll just use finger guns.

politicalcorrectnessisgreat · 16/07/2018 20:38

I'm not, that's the point.

Grilledaubergines · 16/07/2018 20:39

Yes, because they’re comparable, OP🙄

My sister played with dolls. She chose not to have children.

HolyMountain · 16/07/2018 20:39

I’m a Mum of adult ds’s now.

They all played with plastic guns, knives, light sabres , etc.

Read the Penny Holland book about imaginative play with guns and enlighten yourself.

fourpawswhite · 16/07/2018 20:40

Guns are essential for many livelihoods and sports OP. Why are you ignoring the comments pointing that out.

Drugs and rape are criminal activity which are never sport or livelihood even with licence. Many things can be used to kill, knives, cars, heavy objects, rope.

Cannot work out if you are serious or just goady.

Luckymummy22 · 16/07/2018 20:40

In fact i’ve just been shot by the little shit.
He’s refusing to go to sleep and just shouted up at him to go to bed and was shot.

What have I raised................

mustbemad17 · 16/07/2018 20:40

Military kid here. Grew up with toy guns & even, shock horror, spent every summer at open days learning how to shoot the real thing. The idea that you compare a toy gun to rape is ridiculous.
Fwiw...my dad handles a gun in his job. He is not a rapist & he doesn't do drugs. Hth

PeckhamPauline · 16/07/2018 20:40

Okay, now this I do have a problem with. The genocide of the Native Americans isn't something to be turned into a game.

buildabear · 16/07/2018 20:41

My dp and eldest dc do airsoft at the weekend, they don’t kill or maim anyone Hmm
Its fun running around the woods, great exercise and harmless. Nothing like raping or shooting up Confused your analogy is way off

AlonsoTigerHeart · 16/07/2018 20:41

I'm assuming you've snorted something yes?...

mustbemad17 · 16/07/2018 20:42

If you won't let them have toy guns you best hide the lego. And the elastic bands. And the pegs. Oh shit & the potatoes. Believe me, just because you ban them from having toy guns doesn't mean they won't still pretend they have them

Moreisnnogedag · 16/07/2018 20:42

Nice try hon. Bored are we?

rainbowgrimm · 16/07/2018 20:43

My godmother thought the same as you, her son was made to take toy gun birthday presents back to the shop.
Do you want to guess what he does for a living? If only she'd let him have a water pistol.
