A question for those who think playing with toy guns is okay?

Would you also approve of your child playing pretend drug taking? Or pretend rape?

I am not okay with my two DSs playing with guns. I asked my friend if she would be okay with her little boy pretending to inject heroine or snort cocaine and she said that of course she wouldn't.

I just don't get why people think it's okay to allow their child to pretend to kill someone but are utterly disgusted at this.

Anyone care to explain?

Mine instigate war - battleships
Are executioners - hangman
And pyromaniacs - scouts

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 16/07/2018 21:14

So, would star trek or doctor who style laser guns be okay?

rainingcatsanddog · 16/07/2018 21:14

Would you allow your child to play vet and use a pretend tranquiliser gun to sedate the animal? My son fancied joining the army at one point in order to rescue animals in war zones. People who protect endangered animals from poachers are awesome imo.

MyKingdomForACaramel · 16/07/2018 21:15

But what is more acceptable about killing someone than taking drugs? I actually don't get it

Seriously??? Would you prefer someone was killed than say they took drugs??

rainingcatsanddog · 16/07/2018 21:18

It's hard to play pirates without cannons and swords.

Does a piñata encourage violence?

Witchend · 16/07/2018 21:18

Will you let them.play Murder in the Dark, Op?

starzig · 16/07/2018 21:18

This is hilarious. Are you banning foam cricket bats too because real ones can certainly do some damage.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 16/07/2018 21:19

There are actual legal Jobs which use syringes, Guns and tablets.

Your child most likely will be playing doctor vet and police officer rather than drug dealer.

Luckymummy22 · 16/07/2018 21:19

@codswallop in limited experience there is a different (DD & DS).
dD is a tomboy and will play with cars, trains, guns etc. She’s never really been into dolls.

But she is different from DS. He is definitely more rough and tumble and is more into the typical boys pursuits.

Although having said that- he will play with her dolls more than she ever did. And the Barbie camper van is one of his favourite things!

WineOClock22 · 16/07/2018 21:20

So I wasn't going to let my DCs play with toy guns. However, it started to get to the point that I thought if I barr it any longer they will completely rebel as adults and seek out the real thing! They now play with water pistols and some small toy guns. They have fun. They realise the difference between real world and play. I'm pretty sure they'll turn out ok! Smile

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 16/07/2018 21:22

Ds and his friend pretend to be estate agents Shock and make films about selling our home

This concerns me more than any gun games! who wants their child to become an estate agent Sad

Honflyr · 16/07/2018 21:22

You kill people/things in most games - even in Spyro! Is it more acceptable to pretend to kill eachother in other ways, as long as it's not with a pretend weapon? Totally different to shooting up.

We used to play "Minotaur" in primary school - One kid would be the Minotaur and have to chase around the other kids and catch them and eat them/kill them - "your dead meat!" Grin
Or you'd get locked in the dungeons and not fed any food until you starve.

imsoboredwithitall · 16/07/2018 21:25

@Walkingdeadfangirl 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

MitchDash · 16/07/2018 21:25

Military kid here. Military veteran here. Military parent here.

Guns are ALWAYS and ONLY ever guns. Fingers, sticks and anything else can be a gun or a sword or a aircraft or a wand or many, many other things. Guns only ever commit violent acts and personally I wanted better for my kids.

None of my kids ever had guns or swords yet my daughter shot with a youth club and went on to run the shooting range. Apples and oranges.

JennyBlueWren · 16/07/2018 21:28

I remember when playing guns was.banned.at a school I taught at. The children stopped making guns and started making water pistols and laser shooters... so long as we don't call.them.guns!

JassyRadlett · 16/07/2018 21:33

Pretending to kill people - not OK.

I dunno. DS1 does a mean execution of Charles I. Sometimes he’s Charles, and sometimes he’s Cromwell and I have to be poor silly Charlie.

I shall tell him to stop, obvs. Very damaging.

DioneTheDiabolist · 16/07/2018 21:35

Is that what's disturbing your enthusiasm EnthusiasmIsDisturbed? SadThanks

Llanali · 16/07/2018 21:37

@EnthusiasmIsDisturbed

Oh dear, now that is concerning. Have you sought help?

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 16/07/2018 21:39

Sad yes

Thank you for flowers DTD I’m glad someone understands

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 16/07/2018 21:41

No too ashamed let’s hope it’s just a phase he is going through

Snoopysimaginaryfriend · 16/07/2018 21:41

My father was a soldier. My younger brother is a soldier. My youngest brother is a soldier. I married an .... armed police officer. People with guns wear such cool uniforms 😎

Seriously though, my daughters haven't yet shown any interest in guns but if they were to, is it any more harmful than the Beauty and the Beast princess dress my two year old is currently obsessed with?

Poloshot · 16/07/2018 21:47

What a ridiculous post.

frankie001 · 16/07/2018 21:54
frankie001 · 16/07/2018 21:54

Best gun scene ever!

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 16/07/2018 21:56
