To not split dds winnings.

So my dd just won £105.
We as a family did a world cup sweep stake. There are alot of us, and we put £5 per adult/child in each. We were mostly all present when teams were drawn from a hat. So all was fair. Obviously who ever drew the winning team got the money. Was just a bit of fun.
So my dd won, she had frace. Everything good, everyone happy.
Exept my dad just sent a text to our family group saying he had drawn the money out and it was at his ready to be collected. SIL replys in group chat asking how much the kids have each??? Mum and dad both replied with laughing emoji things thinking she was making a cheeky joke. But no, she then text to ask is it just the smaller children it will be split between or older ones too? To this my dad replys no it's not being split, it's my dds money, she won it fairly. Then SIL is not happy saying how it's not fair, all the children will be so disappointed, and that it would just be greedy to keep it to herself.
No iv not replied as iv just seen all the text, and quickly spoke to my dad, he says it's up to my dd but he and mum don't think it should be split at all.
Now I have 4dcs and the dd that won is my youngest, she's only 3. She has no care for money, and wouldn't understand if it was split, but still, I had no intention of splitting it between my own dcs so why should I split it between them all?
I never really thought about it, just see it as that's dds winnings.
So wwyd? Am I being unreasonable to just let dd keep it and risk a family row in an otherwise happy family, over £105.
I doubt very much that they would have split it if it had of been there child or them that had won! There has never been any mention of this at all until now!

Surely all the others knew they hadn't won once their teams were knocked out. What madness is this.

Winniethepee · 18/07/2018 07:14

No way! SIL just being totally unreasonable. £5 of little treats to share with siblings......£ 100 premium bonds and hope her winning streak continues!

AnotherDayAnotherName745 · 18/07/2018 07:28

I wouldn’t let a 3 year old have £105 that realistically, she won’t spend.

The OP has found a great solution now anyway, but in response purely to the post above..... honestly, would you never consider the option of putting aside money for a child as savings, for when they need it later?
I've noticed that some people save, and others never seem to - it's a v useful habit to get into though, and nice for the DD to learn to put away a bit of any birthday money etc

MacavityWasFramed · 18/07/2018 09:13

Don't split it. All the children learn a valuable life lesson that when you gamble, you usually lose. Your DD has £105 in her bank account and learns a lesson (when she's old enough) that this is what you do with unexpected bonus money - you save it in the bank, not spend it as soon as you get it. Later, she will perhaps need it, or have saved enough to buy something really nice.

ChrisNReed · 18/07/2018 09:28

Explain to SIL what a sweepstake is. It is not pass the parcel where every child now gets a sweet between every layer so nobody feels left out.

HeartCurrent · 18/07/2018 09:50

Yanbu I wouldn’t split it. I won the grand national when I was a kid. Our family is massive I have 18 first cousins. If I would of split it I would of had nothing. Plus I WON THEY DIDNT Grin

Seafoodeatit · 18/07/2018 09:59

off topic but @ChrisNReed We weren't allowed to have pass the parcel at my sons birthday for that reason! we used a party company and they said unless there was a toy inside for every child then they wouldn't do it (30 kids!!!).

Mombie87 · 18/07/2018 10:08

Don't split. She's just chancing it. As someone else suggested a token packet of sweets or something. If it were agreed before hand that if a child won it it would be split then yes but I'm guessing that's not the case. I would bank it for my daughter or if she needed something like a new mattress or shoes etc etc then it could be used for that.

Theflying19 · 18/07/2018 10:16

NRTFT. Kids have got to learn to win and lose! She shouldn't have joined the sweepstake if she wasn't willing to lose! Your daughter was lucky this time but it could have been any of you. Say no more and quietly collect the cash. Help her spend or save her winnings wisely.

Deidre21 · 18/07/2018 10:28

Do not split the money. Put it in your daughter’s savings account. When she’s a bit older in a few years she will understand how and why she won it. I’m sure that your sister wouldn’t expect to split the money if one of her children had won. It’s entirely different if your daughter was old enough to decide she wanted to share the money with her siblings or even her cousins, then that would be her decision. Your parents are right that the money should not be split.

HouseworkIsASin10 · 18/07/2018 10:50

OP is not splitting. She has already updated on this.

Sharkwithknees · 18/07/2018 10:53

It's time to cancel the cheque Grin

mikeyssister · 18/07/2018 11:04

RTFT. Or if you can't be bothered at least read OP's updates!! Angry

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 18/07/2018 11:33

Glad it worked out in the end. The money is your DD's all of it. When she is at school and they have school trips etc, or she wants music lessons and needs an instrument- you will be very glad of her savings fund.

HardyforTom · 18/07/2018 12:10

So glad to read a such a good resolution to this. OP you absolutely made the right call and I hope your SIL can see she was being a bit of a numpty.

riceuten · 18/07/2018 12:19

The sweepstake we had a work had a variety of prizes, depending on who won, who came 2nd, 3rd and 4th and who got the least points and goals (this person - me - got their stake back!). But the rules were clear from the outset, and this is key. A sweepstake is just that.

If your DD spontaneously decided to distribute it to other family members, then fine. But that's her decision, not the CF who, as someone elsewhere said, would certainly NOT have given your DD any money had she or any of her offspring won. And if she gets upset about something like this, she needs to get a life.

Boulty · 18/07/2018 13:23

don't split

SIL wouldn't have split it

Maybe spend on a day out for all your children?

Boulty · 18/07/2018 13:24

oops! oh well

cherish123 · 18/07/2018 13:49

Either she is being v cheeky or does not understand the rules of a sweepstake. Everyone put in £5, chose a piece of paper with a country, France won so whoever had France gets all the money. Put it in her account. Why does she think it should be split? Is it because she thinks your DD is too young to understand?

OftenHangry · 18/07/2018 15:03

You made it into Liverpool EchoHmm

Strawberry2017 · 18/07/2018 15:13

Splitting the money shows the children a very strange lesson in life.
Not everyone can win every time.
Your DD won this time. Next time it will be someone else.
Use the money the way you think it should be used. Ignore your ridiculous SIL.

JuJu2017 · 18/07/2018 15:49

What a strange woman ... does she not understand how sweepstakes work?? Your dd absolutely does not need to split it - if she doesn’t agree with one person keeping the winnings then she shouldn’t have entered her children! Wonder if she’s be so keen to split if one of her children had won the jackpot?!

happytobemrsg · 18/07/2018 15:51

My 2 yr old DS won our sweepstake too! He won £60 & it's going straight into his bank account

Damnivy · 18/07/2018 16:00
