To not split dds winnings.

So my dd just won £105.
We as a family did a world cup sweep stake. There are alot of us, and we put £5 per adult/child in each. We were mostly all present when teams were drawn from a hat. So all was fair. Obviously who ever drew the winning team got the money. Was just a bit of fun.
So my dd won, she had frace. Everything good, everyone happy.
Exept my dad just sent a text to our family group saying he had drawn the money out and it was at his ready to be collected. SIL replys in group chat asking how much the kids have each??? Mum and dad both replied with laughing emoji things thinking she was making a cheeky joke. But no, she then text to ask is it just the smaller children it will be split between or older ones too? To this my dad replys no it's not being split, it's my dds money, she won it fairly. Then SIL is not happy saying how it's not fair, all the children will be so disappointed, and that it would just be greedy to keep it to herself.
No iv not replied as iv just seen all the text, and quickly spoke to my dad, he says it's up to my dd but he and mum don't think it should be split at all.
Now I have 4dcs and the dd that won is my youngest, she's only 3. She has no care for money, and wouldn't understand if it was split, but still, I had no intention of splitting it between my own dcs so why should I split it between them all?
I never really thought about it, just see it as that's dds winnings.
So wwyd? Am I being unreasonable to just let dd keep it and risk a family row in an otherwise happy family, over £105.
I doubt very much that they would have split it if it had of been there child or them that had won! There has never been any mention of this at all until now!

Presumably they didn’t have 32 family members so not all teams were drawn?

SubtitlesOn · 17/07/2018 14:37

Oooooh totally agree with idea of getting DD PREMIUM BONDS with the £100

Nousernamefound · 17/07/2018 17:22

Don’t split it.

Bekstar · 17/07/2018 17:31

She is been cheeky, I'd tell her to get stuffed. Seriously would be hardly worth it to enter a sweepstake if it was always meant to be shared. If that was the case then you might as well have kept the money and not bothered. We had similar sweepstake among a lot of us, winnings was only 16 due to sweepstake been ran by an 11 year old and only been a quid for two teams (or something along those lines. My husbands two teams where Croatia and France so money was handed over smbwfore the final match. He won fair n Square. I wouldn't dream of demanding we all take a share, it would be pointless. If your DD doesn't have any concept of money just yet, put it in a bank account for when she is older and let it earn interest. That's what I did for my son when he his chosen horse won grand national. Sounds like your SIL just wants a hand out. I do wonder what she would have done had she won. Seriously how many where in the sweepstake. Because if it was meant to be shared then the point of a sweepstake has disappeared. She is just plain stupid

Janus · 17/07/2018 17:32

£500 a month each?! Wow!! They are going to be very grateful when they hit 18! God I save for all 4 of mine, about £30 a month each and I thought I was doing well!!
I wouldn’t split it at all, her children didn’t get the winning team so why does she think they’d be getting part of the winnings?

MissDaisy18 · 17/07/2018 17:32

Don't split it. If SIL had a problem she should have raised it like an adult not been all subversive/passive-agressive like 'how much each'.

Hadn't seen the abbreviation 'CF' previously but figure this is apt!

Carriecakes80 · 17/07/2018 17:34

Its not fair? Has she never gambled before? If the kids are that upset, let her pay em!
Rubbish, your little lass won fair and square! If I were you, I would get her siblings something little each and put the rest into her account, she'll be glad of that one day! :-) x
My eldest son won our family sweepstakes and my youngest daughter (who is 8) said she would happily swap his £145 for her Monster High dvd and some nail varnish, he declined gracefully but gave her a tenner lol) x

Tessabelle1 · 17/07/2018 17:38

Total CF-ery! Tell her to lump it, take your kids out for the day with the winnings and post plenty of photos on FB!

Commonpeoplelikeme · 17/07/2018 17:41

No way! If it causes a rift, it’s her fault. If you split it it could still cause a rift because you’re (DD) the one that should be miffed. People like that always get away with their selfish shit and you shouldn’t help facilitate it. Tell the group chat it’s going on your DD’s savings (or frankly whatever you decide to do with it) and leave it at that. Luckily you have reasonable parents.

Katherine2626 · 17/07/2018 17:46

Nooo! Your daughter won it - it is hers. End of.

Lifestyleinlondon88 · 17/07/2018 17:48

It will be a good lesson to the other children about fairness. Would she have done the same if it was her children? I haven’t read the full thread but can’t believe the audacity!

Museumland · 17/07/2018 17:50

Absolutely don't split it. The children will learn that when you play a game you play by the rules. Hold firm.

Bekstar · 17/07/2018 17:52

I'd love to see how she handles a kids party, does she wrap a present for every child in Pass the parcel, or maybe when her kids are playing football themselves does she insist on letting both teams score equally. Seriously I understand its good to share but it's also wrong to teach your child that in a fair competition you will still get a share of the winnings. A competition is just that. It's not meant to be a share. If she wanted a share why not just give them a fiver each and don't enter the sweepstake.

Alter · 17/07/2018 17:53

No def don't split, defeats the whole object of a sweepstake lol. That would be like everyone getting their fivers back! The other kids need to learn how these things work, a valuable lesson. Wink

TimeIhadaNameChange · 17/07/2018 17:57

It's nice to see that the whole family is supporting your DD with this. When I first read your OP I feared it was going to end with your parents agreeing it should be shared so as to not cause trouble, and was most relieved to find otherwise.

Hope your DD (and all the others) enjoy bouncing!

holey · 17/07/2018 17:58

So happy to read the update OP. If SIL tries anything like this again, remember that it was her that decided to change the rules to suit herself. So if there had been any nastiness going on, it was her that caused it, not you.

Biblio78 · 17/07/2018 18:00

Put it in her savings or take your DC all out on a trip to a farm or something your dd will enjoy. When she's older she will enjoy seeing photos and hearing about how she won on the World Cup.

Sarahrellyboo1987 · 17/07/2018 18:01

SIL is being very rude and greedy. I bet she wouldn’t hesitate to keep all the money if her DC won.
Give DD who won £20 and let her spend it how she wants. Put the rest in the bank. No splitting it

BewareOfDragons · 17/07/2018 18:07

Great update.

ArvidsDaddy · 17/07/2018 18:11

I'd split it to show how graceful you are in contrast to your SIL, but mainly to save the unworthy hassles. However, I would take note of it, and avoid unnecessary interactions with the SIL if you could in the future. If she is so petty like this on a small thing, it is just not worth your time.

PalePinkSwan · 17/07/2018 18:11

Great update, your family have handled this well.

pollymere · 17/07/2018 18:12

Buy your dd something lovely like a playhouse or dollshouse maybe? You could then use the rest to buy ice creams for all your dc. My dd won a raffle when she was tiny and she got to choose something (a pink bike!) That much money is about the price of a three wheel scooter... if you feel mean, buy her a toy that the others could also play with, but is essentially hers.

CaptainHammer · 17/07/2018 18:13

Great update OP!

Munchyseeds · 17/07/2018 18:13

She won it fair and square...she keeps it!
