To think the anti trump marches are a waste of time

I don't like him or agree with his policies, but what good is it going to do walking around with a giant helium balloon of a baby?

Loads of horrible world leaders from the middle East that are doing far far woorse and they get a royal visit over here with no one batting an eyelid. Just smacks of double standards to me.

The same people who criticise the protesters as jumping on a bandwagon also think we should slavishly follow protocol and respectfully welcome him.

Balls to that.

Helmetbymidnight · 13/07/2018 12:00

The MN brexitteers hate protests. Although they're like it's the will of the people, they actually get really annoyed by democracy in action.

Mind you, they have got a point here - having screwed our trading relationship with Europe and trying to kill financial services - we do need to hold Trump's tiny hands now more than ever.

As Trump would say, Sad.

Clandestino · 13/07/2018 12:00

The balloon makes the UK look like there are people there with a sense of humour and a backbone. Obviously, the same doesn't apply to majority of posters on this thread including the OP. The sycophancy is mind-blowing.
The current POTUS makes the US look like a bunch of primitive rednecks hollering for the next fascist to come their way.
On the other hand, should Boris Johnson become the new PM, he can share hair care tips with the POTUS. And Rees-Mogg and Raab will be excellent to exchange ideas on feminism with.

longwayoff · 13/07/2018 12:10

Yes Janey. Keep going. You may get there.

longwayoff · 13/07/2018 12:16

I hate to state the obvious but Trump doesnt give a stuff about the UK. I feel sorry for all of you who think hes going to do something special for Britain.. Not back of the queue but not even in the queue.

Setpeace · 13/07/2018 12:18

Grin
Clandestino · 13/07/2018 12:21

@longwayoff the stupidity or short-sightedness is really mind-blowing, isn't it?
So you have a state visit from someone who says his own country first. Who progressively isolates his own country from the rest of the world. Why should he have the interests of the UK in mind? He doesn't. He doesn't care about the UK, he's only shit stirring.

TheLastNigel · 13/07/2018 12:31

I guess you could say any protest is pointless. But if no one ever objected to anything that's plain wrong ever then where would we be?
Maybe there isn't enough protest in the world 🤷🏽‍♀️
I haven't been on a political protest since the march against the Iraq war. I'm going to Trafalgar Square after work-just because I truly think Trump is evil and I object to him being in my country. I know it won't change anything. But I feel strongly enough that I want to be there I guess.

littlebillie · 13/07/2018 12:45

I agree, he is the leader of the free world and we must just look weird on the world stage.

I think we need to be less involved in American politics and let the colony get on with it

Clandestino · 13/07/2018 12:52

I agree, he is the leader of the free world and we must just look weird on the world stage.

He's leading an isolationist politics and doing his best to NOT be a leader of the free world. Unless you count his friend Kim in.

UpstartCrow · 13/07/2018 12:54

Trump is not leader of the free world, he's president of the United States. There is no leader of the free world, that's how you know its the free world.

Madeleine Albright on definitions of facism:

Madeleine Albright: ‘The things that are happening are genuinely, seriously bad’
www.theguardian.com/books/2018/jul/08/madeleine-albright-fascism-is-not-an-ideology-its-a-method-interview-fascism-a-warning

“Defining fascism is difficult,” she responds. “First of all, I don’t think fascism is an ideology. I think it is a method, it’s a system.”

It is in his methods that Trump can be compared with, if not precisely likened to, the dictators of the 1930s. Fascists are typically masters of political theatre. They feed on and inflame grievances by setting “the people” against their “enemies”. Fascists tell their supporters that there are simple fixes for complex problems. They present as national saviours and conflate themselves with the state. They seek to subvert, discredit and eliminate liberal institutions. She reminds us that they have often ascended to power through the ballot box and then undermined democracy from within. She is especially fond of a Mussolini quote about “plucking a chicken feather by feather” so that people will not notice the loss of their freedoms until it is too late.

SabineUndine · 13/07/2018 12:55

The only thing Trump wants to do for Britain is asset-strip the NHS. Anyone who thinks protesting against his visit is a waste of time needs to have a hard look at their priorities.

PerkingFaintly · 13/07/2018 12:56

More from that interview with Albright:

She agrees that we ought to be careful not to casually throw around the F-word lest we drain the potency from what should be a powerful term. “I’m not calling Trump a fascist,” she says. Yet she seems to be doing all but that when she puts him in the same company as historical fascists in a book that seeks to sound “an alarm bell” about a fascist revival.

She frequently nudges the reader to make connections between the president of the United States and past dictatorships. She reminds us who first coined the Trumpian phrase “drain the swamp”. It was drenare la palude in the original, Mussolini Italian. She quotes Hitler talking about the secret of his success: “I will tell you what has carried me to the position I have reached. Our political problems appeared complicated. The German people could make nothing of them… I…reduced them to the simplest terms. The masses realised this and followed me.” Sound familiar?

NanaNoodleman · 13/07/2018 12:57

But the USA used to espouse democratic values and that was important. Trump does not even pay lip service. He respects dictators because he is stupid enough to believe that dictatorship equals strength. He is putins useful idiot and it is sad to see the president of a great country sink so low.

Mqriejonea · 13/07/2018 13:12

All the protestors with their "Oprah for president" banners and huge statue look like idiots.

Last thing we need is another TV celeb as a world leader.

PerkingFaintly · 13/07/2018 13:20

Welcome to MN, Mqriejonea.

Did you join MN specially for Trump's visit, or did you namechange just for this thread?

BarbarianMum · 13/07/2018 13:20

"Oprah for President" sounds no more ridiculous to me than "Boris for PM". Or, unfortunately, any more unlikely. Sad

topcat1980 · 13/07/2018 13:24

Oprah for president would be an actual self made billionaire business person in the Whitehouse, not the scion of inherited wealth.

CoolCarrie · 13/07/2018 13:26

The UK expects intelligent behaviour from our allies, which is sorely lacking when it comes to trumpet. He will hate that balloon,he doesn’t have a sense of humour, his ego will suffer so it’s great imo. His disgusting behaviour towards women, disabled people and muslins is enough reason to treat him with contempt.

Justanotherlurker · 13/07/2018 13:33

The protest is nothing more than 1005 virtue signalling and inst/facebook selfies, nothing more.

I was speaking to a protester this morning, her reasons were apparently about Trump enacting the immigration laws on brown (her words) people and children. I asked as she was old enough had she also done the same when Obama state visit as the photos that were circulated through the outrage machine were from the Obama administration I was told I am obviously an Trump supporter Hmm

If the people making this protest do have this supreme ability to see nuance of argument and speak only in facts as much as they profess they should realise that the many people who think there is a lot hypocrisy and virtue signalling in this protest, doesn't make the opposition out to be trump supporters.

I saw on the news 2 young women talking about his sexism, misogyny, all valid points but they was holding up placards that have been supplied by SWP, and considering their murky history of kangaroo courts you would have thought the principals would have applied equally rather than because it was part of "their" side.

Stripyhoglets1 · 13/07/2018 13:36

We don't have to respect the position of potus when it's occupied by someone like Trump. That's the good thing about democracy is you can object and protest and try and change things. I despise the fact we are having to put up with what he says about our country/leaders.

Mqriejonea · 13/07/2018 13:36

photos that were circulated through the outrage machine were from the Obama administration

It's weird that Obama is seen as a saint, the potus is a very dirty job.

I have no doubt that a blimp of him would have never been allowed to fly during his term.

topcat1980 · 13/07/2018 13:39

"I asked as she was old enough had she also done the same when Obama state visit as the photos that were circulated through the outrage machine were from the Obama administration I was told I am obviously an Trump supporter hmm "

Some of the photos were from the Obama administration, but the policies of removing children from their parents and putting them in cages has been far more common under Trump.
The law seperating children from Families was enacted in 2018

"Holding up placards that have been supplied by SWP, "

Whataboutism,. easy to dismiss.

The protests are just fine, those complaining about it are hypocrites.
