To wonder why we aren't rioting in the streets?

So:
The government is about to begin stockpiling processed food in case the country is plunged into chaos by a “no deal” Brexit.
In just over half a year the UK is going to be wrecked for decades to come. We're looking at rationing, for God's sake. Power cuts. Mass unemployment. The loss of our employment and human rights. The new Health Secretary has allegedly received 10s of 1000s from the head of a thinktank that wants to abolish the NHS. There is no plan for the future. Not even the most ardent of the Brexiter politicians that got us into this mess are pretending that we aren't looking at massive economic and social problems.
Isn't it time for us as ordinary citizens who, with our children, will pay for this fiasco to start demonstrating, meeting our MPs, doing anything else that might possibly help to stop this? I don't just mean the demonstration that took place in London, and the others around the country - I mean serious numbers of people, making their voices heard. Because we will all suffer the very serious consequences of this mess.

People talk about democracy being damaged if we change our minds

Isn't that the point of democracy? For people to be able to change their minds?
We are able to every election, at different levels.
We can even divorce our spouses and remarry them again.
Same with purchases.

It seems Brexit is the only exempt. Never mind how the campaign was run, or the outcome of the negotiations
HmmConfused

Head over to the prepper topic on MN. It's not tin foil hat wearing, gun toting, zombie predicting gibberish. It's sensible people planning for all sorts of stuff which may or may not happen- bad weather, power failure that sort of thing. Add possible food shortages or food supply interruption as well.

Peregrina · 14/07/2018 09:38

My late DPs lived on the edge of the Peak district and regularly got snowed in. They used to have whole cupboards full of tinned goods, and powdered milk, so that they could feed themselves for probably a couple of weeks. The snowploughs always got through before they had to run down stocks completely.

specialsubject · 14/07/2018 13:13

as many on mn are too dumb even to keep cash in the house, ( bank failures are frequent but they dont learn) a little common sense on this is probably a waste of time.

Thesuzle · 14/07/2018 13:46

OP for Christ’s sake calm down, yes its been badly handled by a remain voting PM and her cabal of remain civil servants, so if we are going to hell in a handcart it’s their fault.
Woman up think positively, and go and read a quality newspaper

lljkk · 14/07/2018 13:48

If banks fail, who will take the cash, won't govt fail to be able to guarantee its value? Will cash massively devalue, perhaps it's foreign currency that needs to be stockpiled. Or go back to a barter system.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 14/07/2018 13:54

We could use carrots as a new form of currency

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 14/07/2018 13:55

Do Mars bars still hold their value?

nomoremrsniceguy · 14/07/2018 13:58

So, all of our processed food comes from Europe. We'll be forced to eat unprocessed food after brexit? Hmmm.... .

lljkk · 14/07/2018 14:11

potatoes... good old spuds. Best currency.

TheElementsSong · 14/07/2018 14:32

think positively

“Wingardium leviosa!”

bellinisurge · 14/07/2018 15:28

@Thesuzle - if/when this all goes tits up, I'll be blaming the people who voted for this idiocy not TM who is trying (and failing) to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
She is not deliberately sabotaging a wonderful idea. The idea was shit in the first place.

Lweji · 14/07/2018 16:32

Not bitcoin, then? Grin

bellinisurge · 14/07/2018 16:33

Fags and miniatures- the old faves.

bellinisurge · 14/07/2018 16:34

Although I'm generally in the state of fancying a snickers bar.

divadee · 14/07/2018 16:58

Should I start stockpiling nylons to trade with?

woman11017 · 14/07/2018 17:03

Pictures from riots happening right now in London. Guess which side those who are attacking the police and police horses are on. No stockpiling of baked beans is going to save anyone from these types.

Rach5ll · 14/07/2018 17:10

All our processed food comes from Europe

Good riddance (remainer)

Lweji · 14/07/2018 17:10

Should I start stockpiling nylons to trade with?

I'd be happy to send selected items in Red Cross packages.

I'll trade you for... see, that's why the UK is doomed. Nothing I really want in return. That's what the rest of Europe is thinking.

bellinisurge · 14/07/2018 17:15

Processed doesn't necessarily mean turkey twizzlers @Rach5ll . Canned stuff like chopped tomatoes is "processed food".

bellinisurge · 14/07/2018 17:17

Stay in out of the way of FreeTommyScumbag types. That's how you prep against them. Or plan to piss off somewhere if necessary. We only have a tent so not really a great plan. No alternative dream home in the country Grin. Better to stay in with your preps that nobody knows are there.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 14/07/2018 17:31

I'll be blaming the people who voted for this idiocy not TM who is trying (and failing) to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
So it wasn't her who decided to throw a snap election to win power instead of unite the two biggest parties in talks to make the best of things?
I must be remembering wrong!

woman11017 · 14/07/2018 17:33

bellini your preps do sound good, and we appreciate your advice, but without properly funded domestic security in all its forms, we are stuffed. Are there any prepper support groups/networks for the poor and homeless btw, to that I would definitely contribute.
stay in with your preps that nobody knows are there
You would be surprised how much people know.

Lweji · 14/07/2018 17:38

TM also led a Brexit confirmation vote in the Commons.

Unless it's a clever strategy to undermine Brexit.

bellinisurge · 14/07/2018 17:40

@CaptainKirkssparetupee this is all happening because of the Leave vote. I hate the Tories but blaming TM for a mess caused by Cameron and the subsequent Leave vote is the cause of this.
And so I prep. Well, I did anyway because here is prone to the vagaries of the weather. Power and heat out with a newborn in mid winter was no fun.
