To say 'get over here if you want England to win'

Ardent supporters, luke warm well wishers (I'm looking at you Scotland and Wales), waistcoat appreciators, Spurs, Arsenal, northern football fans, League 2 strugglers, those whose only interest is the office sweepstake, those playing 'It's coming home' on trumpets at 1am (I still haven't forgiven you for the vuvuzelas), those quietly sipping Chateauneuf du Pape with friends and family, Brexiters, Remainers and basically, anyone and everyone in between who isn't going to use the football as an excuse to jump up and down on emergency response vehicles or piss on a foreigner. Get over here now and leave the naysayers and misery gutses to it.

Come on England!!!

I don’t really care about the football but I really want them to win, simply because my Dh and Ds would be so happy- potentially a once in a lifetime experience for them, something that cannot be bought or manufactured, just an experience they will love. So I’m behind them all the way!!

QuinquiremeOfNineveh · 11/07/2018 13:31

Gary Lineker must love having to sit through that Italia 90 footage every other day! (But I don't think he ever failed to score from a penalty for England.)

I can't help hoping that there'll be a different outcome every time I see those shoot outs replayed.

It has been interesting listening to Lineker and Shearer discussing World Cups and penalty shootouts and so on, as they've both been there and done that and know what they're talking about.

Cyclewidow46 · 11/07/2018 13:40

I'm in!
So excited for the match tonight!
The team have done so well, even if we don't get through to the final, they can hold their heads high. This team will be making us proud for years to come.....

DoYouLikeHueyLewisandTheNews · 11/07/2018 13:45

Spurs fan here. It's coming home!!! Eeeeee excited but also quite nervous.

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 11/07/2018 13:50

I keep yelling to DH, "What's going to happen?! Are we gonna win?! Telllll meeeee" like he's some sort of soothsayer - I can't cope with the stress.

Gahhhhhhh! Already got palpitations from being anaemic and this isn't helping!

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 11/07/2018 13:52

My dad was at the '66 World Cup final - still got the ticket/programme. He's beside himself :)

nowifi · 11/07/2018 13:54

Ah cuppa that's lovely. I can't concentrate today is just dragging! Hurry up 7pm!

lovesugarfreejelly63 · 11/07/2018 13:56

When I watched England win in 1966 I fell off the sofa in shock, am pinning all my hopes on an England win tonight! feel sick with excitement

ClarkWGriswold · 11/07/2018 13:56

Just because the commoner hating pearl clutchers dislike it so much, I'll start a rousing chorus of "It's coming home. It's coming home..."

ALittleAubergine · 11/07/2018 14:00

I'm hoping for a France vs England final, that way I'll be content with whatever the result is. Would be amazing to witness the level of craziness though if England win.

ClarkWGriswold · 11/07/2018 14:04

I'm also terrifically excited and terrified, in equal measures, for tonight. Gareth Southgate and Harry Kane seem to be an England dream come true!

TriggeredByHangingBaskets · 11/07/2018 14:06

Engerrrrrlaaaand! So excited here. We're on holiday but are able to watch still (phew) Its DH birthday as well so a party atmosphere here today. And 3 lions playing on a loop 🦁🦁🦁

PurpleNailVarnish · 11/07/2018 14:09

I've resisted commenting on other threads but I'm hoping this will be a friendly thread.

I'm not even a football fan but I'm an England fan and yes I really would be the same if it was Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland but I'm ridiculously nervous about tonight, so much so that I'm really not sure I can watch.

I'm here- I'm not English, I don't live in England but I am British! I don't particularly do football but I have watched all their games (possibly as Wimbledon isn't exciting me this year!)

Therefore I will be supporting them tonight! (Plus I got a wierd kinda crush type think on the waistcoat!)

ManicUnicorn · 11/07/2018 14:16

The line 'It's Coming Home' is obviously the hook from the song Three Lions. That was the official England team song in Euro96, which was held in England. Football was invented in England hence 'footballs coming home'. The fans started singing it and it caught on. It's a shame people don't get that? It's just a chant.

LittleLionMansMummy · 11/07/2018 14:24

Even LNER knows it (this was sent to me by a colleague travelling from Kings Cross).

Are you referring to my post? If so, of course I realise it's from the Baddiel/Skinner/Brodie song! Euro '96 was the tournament of my teenage years.

Couple of fruity ciders in the fridge, loads of party food, gorge day for it. Come on England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🦁🦁🦁😄

paddlingwhenIshouldbeworking · 11/07/2018 14:43

Haven't got time to read thread but I'm in!!!

Can't stand the tension.

Wish I was working though, miss the office atmosphere. DH's office all wearing waistcoats today and shutting up shop early to make sure everyone can be home or in their local pub by 7!

Mrsfs · 11/07/2018 14:53

I am Scottish but COME ON ENGLAND!!!!!!!!!!

DeltaG · 11/07/2018 14:54

@ALittleAubergine

I'm simultaneously hoping for and dreading an England-France final! If my relatives were more gracious I'd get behind France, but their unpleasant goading makes me want them to lose. And if they don't I'll never hear the end of it!

Caspiana · 11/07/2018 14:58

@jacqueshammer and @leigha

It isn’t a joke. As pointed out above, the line it’s coming home was written by Baddiel and Skinner for Euro 96 to refer to the fact the tournament was in England. Not a joke because we had no chance - we had every chance in euro 96, and nearly went and won it! I still reminisce of what might have been if Gazza had been an inch or two further forward and got on the end of the cross, or McManaman’s shot had been an inch lower instead of off the bar during golden goal extra time in the semis... We would have won the whole thing I’m sure!
