To think all children activities should be cancelled on Wednesday?!

I'm hoping so! They should cancel or at least rearrange Brownies/martial arts/gym/swimming, etc!

Either that or lots of parents having to nip out at half time!

It's a historic event, kids should be allowed to watch!

@chocolateworshipper now that would definitely be the reason that year would be remarkable to me! Loved the Beatles when I was growing up.

Shannaratiger · 09/07/2018 20:41

Our school has potentaily moved the yr5/6 performance forward from 6pm to 5:30. However they have said if enough parents won't be able to make it they will leave and and we will just have to miss the first 20 minutes of the match. I'd be upset but the kids come first.

Ariela · 09/07/2018 20:41

It can always be watched on catch up later on.
In 1966, if you had a TV you watched it, if not you listened to the radio or got the newspaper the next day to read the result.
You didn't have video recorders, or iplayer!

sprinklesandsauce · 09/07/2018 20:42

I get that people want to watch the games, but real life doesn't stop because football is on. If you don't want to miss any of the game, then don't take your kid to the activity. That is every parent's choice isn't it?

I haven't watched a single game yet as I have zero interest in football, but I don't put down people who do want to watch it, although it is annoying when everything is cancelled "because of the football".

I will probably watch if they make it to the final, as I would consider that the "historic event".

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/07/2018 20:43

It can always be watched on catch up later on.

Sport isn't the same on catch up and there's always some idiot who will give the score away!

Glumglowworm · 09/07/2018 20:46

My Brownies are meeting as usual (we’re in wales), I will be seriously unimpressed with any parents who use the football as an excuse to be late to pick up their children (I think it’s insanely rude to be late to pick up from a volunteer run activity anyway). If you can’t tear yourself away to collect your child from the volunteers who have just run an evenings activity then don’t bother sending them at all.

please do not send chickens to Brownies though

jarhead123 · 09/07/2018 20:47

We've told my daughter she can't go to Brownies ha ha

Glumglowworm · 09/07/2018 20:47

Ariela

I assure you Video Recorders existed and were extremely common in 1996! It wasn’t the dark ages!

clumsyduck · 09/07/2018 20:49

Im loving the World Cup can't wait to watch but seriously the world doesn't stop . Christ Confused

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 09/07/2018 20:50

Loads of things are being moved because of it. Any that go ahead I’d imagine will be half empty.

clumsyduck · 09/07/2018 20:50

I assure you Video Recorders existed and were extremely common in 1996! It wasn’t the dark ages!

Except she said 1966

Singlebutmarried · 09/07/2018 20:51

I’ve just asked DD if she wants to watch the footie rather than go to gymnastics.

She’s opted for the footie.

Sharkwithknees · 09/07/2018 20:51

I'm with you, OP. I more feel bad for the volunteers that run it not getting to watch it!! My daughter won't be going to brownies, she wants to watch the football! For those sneering at it being a historic event, it it significant in football history, we haven't made the semis since 1990! And it IS the most popular sport in the world, sooo... Hmm

I like what Aldi have done and stated they'll be shutting at 3pm so their staff will be finishing early if England make the finals.

Come on England!! GrinFootball

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 09/07/2018 20:53

Wow have Aldi promised to shut? That’s amazing.

Seasawride · 09/07/2018 20:53

Sleeping

What are you on about? I was a nursing sister for years! You have access to tele pet. We watched fergie and Sarah’s wedding as the patients wanted to as we did.

I hope you are not on a ward??? If so sort out a tele!

Seasawride · 09/07/2018 20:54

Fergie and Andrew obviously :)

MyDcAreMarvel · 09/07/2018 20:54

@JellySlice my daughter school did the same thing, and although I love football I was concerned parents may not be able to watch if they were still at work.
Does the school begin with A B?

Believeitornot · 09/07/2018 20:54

My ds has cubs. He’s not going.

It’s not the end of the world if he misses it - he won’t see England in the semi finals for a long time so why not

monkeysox · 09/07/2018 20:55

Our wed cubs was cancelled within minutes of the match finishing on Saturday. Grin

Seasawride · 09/07/2018 20:56

Glum
You are right people should not be late to pick up but i remember the excitement of wales on the Euroes 2 years ago. Don’t you?

Seasawride · 09/07/2018 20:57

Bloody good for Aldi!

Seasawride · 09/07/2018 20:58

Oh it’s ok to sneer at footy don’t cha know!

Sad really

scarbados · 09/07/2018 20:58

It's a fucking footbal match. Football is a game. It is NOT a historic event of any kind.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 09/07/2018 20:59

Wouldn't call the semi final historic. Sunday maybe! If that happens.

Yacka · 09/07/2018 21:00

Ok so as much as some people think 'historic' etc and others don't care less I can't see how a community can't come to a decent arrangement.

My kids beavers and cubs have already asked what we all want to do as it falls on the same day. Most parents have said we don't mind, mainly so the leaders themselves don't miss out as they work hard to do so much for our kids if THEY want the night off it's ok

And usually the end of year school disco clashes but that too has been moved. All seems to be simple case of liaison with schools and clubs activities.

No need for drama. Watch if you want and if not have a nice family night
