To think all children activities should be cancelled on Wednesday?!

I'm hoping so! They should cancel or at least rearrange Brownies/martial arts/gym/swimming, etc!

Either that or lots of parents having to nip out at half time!

It's a historic event, kids should be allowed to watch!

Noone did this for the female football team when they reached he semis in 2015, why is it when the men play they are given more time. It dismisses the efforts of women.

SamHeughansLeftEyebrow · 09/07/2018 20:01

Historic?
Hahahaha hahahahahaha.

No.

PortiaCastis · 09/07/2018 20:02

The moronic violence and vandalism some communities experienced as a result of a football match are certainly historic, trashing an ambulance and a taxi or in the case of my local the tv screen are historical acts of moronic football supporters

Ginger1982 · 09/07/2018 20:03

FFS!🙄

Mummyoflittledragon · 09/07/2018 20:03

Just don’t take your chicken to these optional activities.

It’s ok. Don’t feel too guilty about not giving it brownies before cooking.

BrexitWife · 09/07/2018 20:04

I wouldn't have asked on here OP, anyone with even a passing interest in football is sneered at.
So it seems that about 20 millions people watched the last match.
That’s about 1/3 of the population.
It also means that about 2/3 of the population couldn’t be there’d to watch the match.

So yes a lot of people did watch but they weren’t the majority. The comments on MN just reflect that.
I’m sure that people who like football can accept that others just can’t be bothered with it.
Just like people who don’t like football can accept others do like it.
I personally have more issue wth people who usually can’t be bothered with football, have no interest in it at all are suddenly passionate about the WC matches. Because they aren’t interested by football as such. More by the fact they’ve been told it’s an ‘historic event’ and dintbwant to miss out.

CtrlCandCtrlV · 09/07/2018 20:06

I think the schools should close on Wednesday, just to be sure. And on Thursday too, to deal with the celebration or the grieving. Let's make it a national 2 days. Even Will and Kate made sure their Christening didn't clash.

yes I am being sarcastic

CanaBanana · 09/07/2018 20:06

I really couldn't care less about any stupid game and can't stand football. I'm actually proud that my DC have no interest in it. One of the reasons I married DH was his total lack of interest in football, so I never have to put up with it being inflicted on me in my own home. I'd be extremely annoyed if my DC activities were cancelled for a game on telly!

Seasawride · 09/07/2018 20:07

Lol reminds me of the rugby World Cup wen we beat the Aussies was it goodness me 2000? Ds2 watched it at home and he the coach and all the kids were late for footy practise.

Ffs op just do what suits you

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/07/2018 20:07

Going by some of the threads on here most of the people who don't like football can't accept that others do, hence my comment about sneering. Thankfully real life isn't like that!

nancy75 · 09/07/2018 20:08

Just a quick plea from someone that runs after school sports, if you do decide to miss your session on Wednesday please don’t ask for a refund, overheads still have to be paid!

EthelMerman · 09/07/2018 20:08

I just don’t understand football nor the mania exhibited by fans at club or national/international levels.

I particularly don’t understand why every non-football related event has to grind to a halt to accommodate the World Cup. I felt really sorry for any brides/grooms on Saturday who were forced to accommodate it for the (mostly) men who couldn’t get through an afternoon without seeing England play.

I don’t want to stop football being played and enjoyed, it just seems to have become such a phenomenally enormous and stupid industry with insane sums paid for players.

I dread to think what my fellow countrymen will be like if the team does actually pull it off.

Oh well rant done, only a few more days to go and it will all be over.

I thank you.
As you were.

Namechangemum100 · 09/07/2018 20:08

Eh?! I had to google this "historic" event as had no idea what it was, then realised it was the football

It's not historic...it's barely interesting.

chipsandgin · 09/07/2018 20:08

Nope. Brilliant time to go to the shops though - or practically anywhere that is usually crowded, or drive somewhere that usually has terrible traffic. Literally zero interest in it from me, I'd be really pissed off if clubs I'd pre-paid for were cancelled. Historic my arse!

Seasawride · 09/07/2018 20:09

i am proud by dc have no interest in it

How odd to be proud or otherwise of this

We had 6 kids and encouraged any and all sports even those we didn’t really like ourselves.

How controlling

HeresMe · 09/07/2018 20:09

The population of England is about 55 million, the match on Saturday roughly 20 million watched the game.

Don't make the majority change Thier plans for the minority.

I hate all this where they say all the nation are behind us and they are all celebrating it isn't true.

I don't really care for football I wish them well though.

AuntieStella · 09/07/2018 20:09

They don't do it for other man's sports either.

This isn't a simple question of sex of players, but the global appeal of men's soccer, and the role of this tournament as the pinnacle for all footballing nations - and many which aren't but where you still find zmanU supporters, or Wild Boars in an England shirt.

For much of the country, this is a national celebration and (currently) joyful. The groups stages have been utterly fabulous in diverse aras.

I don't really give a stuff about football, but I do enjoy national spectacle. At least there's no chance of a Brit in the clashing men's finals (assuming match lasts longer than 2 hours Tennis )

Seasawride · 09/07/2018 20:10

nancy

Quite right there

SamPotatoes · 09/07/2018 20:10

Cubs is cancelled as the leaders want to watch the match. Considering the amount of time and effort they put in the rest of the year, we thought this was fair enough. DD (who likes football and goes to matches) was happy enough to find the result afterwards.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 09/07/2018 20:11

I dunno. I have zero interest in football and won't be watching BUT I am capable of seeing that many people are interested and I do think it's nice that people are excited about it. It doesn't happen very often - surely all you haters can see that? Just because you don't like it, it doesn't mean others don't.

ForalltheSaints · 09/07/2018 20:11

England have lost in semi-finals before, in 1990 and 1996, so it is not historic!

sockunicorn · 09/07/2018 20:12

i got a text today from my daughters school saying that the Y6 performance of their final year drama production on wednesday evening is being cancelled and moved to thursday. Apparently all tickets will be moved to thursday and if you cant come let the office know and they will refund you.

Nice for the parents who have arranged their work shifts or childcare around it. Hmm

RunMummyRun68 · 09/07/2018 20:12

Op buggered off?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/07/2018 20:13

@CanaBanana you do realise your children might develop an interest in football? Neither of my parents were into football but I love it and have done since childhood.

scaevola · 09/07/2018 20:14

Viewing figures are higher for evening matches. Even the group stages were at 23m (Columbia). The quarter final had 89% of TV audience and the highest ever live streaming figures (and I don't know how they allow for numbers at public screenings when they amass numbers)
