To think all children activities should be cancelled on Wednesday?!

I'm hoping so! They should cancel or at least rearrange Brownies/martial arts/gym/swimming, etc!

Either that or lots of parents having to nip out at half time!

It's a historic event, kids should be allowed to watch!

Trouble is it might be incredibly hard to avoid the score and watch it later

I was walking around on Saturday afternoon, my friend was obviously having a party....lots of male voices and i was about half way between that house and the pub when the first goal was scored

I know it was our goal because of the ROAR that i heard Grin

babyno5 · 11/07/2018 08:53

But on a positive note our local racecourse has opened its doors for free to watch in the huge screen tonight. Yes they will make money on bar and food etc but they didn’t have to organise it at quite short notice.
Come on 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 #itscominghome

RoseAndRose · 11/07/2018 08:55

If a low turnout is expected, then cancelling the whole activity is just plain sensible.

Expected TV audience is over 30m (according to BBC this morning) do it really is over half the nation (and of course does not include those who would want to watch but are unable to get to a screen, because of work or whatever). They didn't say if that figure includes live streaming and radio.

Sharkwithknees · 11/07/2018 08:57

Quite proud that I've managed to avoid watching any of the the WC so far.

You're "proud", really?? I've never seen Corrie, can I be proud too?

Mummyschnauzer · 11/07/2018 08:59

Oh FFS it’s grown men chasing a ball round a field! Almost every week there a world championship at some sport or another. It actually doesn’t really matter. If only people put so much passion and money into something that did, protecting vulnerable kids, curing cancer etc the world would be a better place

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 11/07/2018 09:04

Expected TV audience is over 30m

Seems very high...how do they work it out? Does anyone know?

Andromeida59 · 11/07/2018 09:07

@sharkwithknees of course you can but then I don't think Corrie fans go round smashing people/things up/ have people driving round like idiots if the episode doesn't go in their favour.

AuntieStella · 11/07/2018 09:08

I'd quite like to know too.

The baseline must be the figures from the last evening match (Columbia in the group) when it was 23m

meditrina · 11/07/2018 09:12

"If only people put so much passion and money into something that did, protecting vulnerable kids, curing cancer etc the world would be a better place"

I'd like a unicorn please.

People like entertainment, and this form of entertainment is globally the most popular. The Puritans were 'right but repulsive'. I think that trying to condemn a spectacle wheilst the spectacle is actually underway is a hiding to nowhere. Unless you like being dismissed as a sneery catsbum mouth. Which will probably set your cause back, rather than advance it.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 11/07/2018 09:13

auntie

I agree

But do they do it on amount of licences and people in the house?

That seems a bit flawed as out of 5 of us only two are watching

Cant be that cos loads of people aren't watching it at home

Plimmy · 11/07/2018 09:17

Precedent. The top 10 biggest TV audiences over the years have been between 27.5m and 30.3m. The biggest ever was for England in the World Cup final in 1966.

Sharkwithknees · 11/07/2018 09:37

Andromeida59
So by avoiding watching the world cup, it makes you avoid doing those things? Good logic Hmm I've never done any of those things and the minority that have are fucking yobs. Watching the world cup does not turn you into an arsehole.

Wavydavylady · 11/07/2018 09:39

Never heard such a load of rubbish.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 11/07/2018 09:42

But how is the precedent set?

Jorah · 11/07/2018 09:59

IT'S COMING HOME

arghhhhhhh · 11/07/2018 10:05

@Andromeida59 I watch Corrie and also the World Cup.

Tonight I shall be watching England. If we don't win, I shall obviously be drunk and filled with anger and start a fight with anyone who gets in my way....I'm female, 5ft and also 31 weeks pregnant however I am a huge footy fan so clearly this is the behaviour that's expected of me.

If we win....I may even go absolutely wild and take all my clothes off and dance around naked on top of my neighbours cars whilst chanting 'it's coming home' at the top of my voice waking up all those around me.

Win or lose I plan on seeing how many bricks I can put through windows and how many tyres I can slash. I honestly can't wait for the carnage to begin, it's going to be epic.

There's going to be a hell of a lot of damage across the country tonight seen as millions of us footy fans have the same plan to cause mayhem.

Or maybe we will just watch it and enjoy it for what it is. Yes we will cheer and scream. Wether we watch it at the pub or at home. Or on a big screen. We are just getting in the spirit of something we enjoy. And to be honest most will be pleased with the result either way as no one ever thought we would come this far.

There's idiots who support every sport. Every hobby. Literally idiots everywhere we go. They can't be avoided. No need to be so narrow minded.

Mummyschnauzer · 11/07/2018 10:08

Meditrina. I take it you’re a football fan. I which case I rest my case Grin

Sneezeandooops · 11/07/2018 10:13

Hope they dont we have lots on today, but If they do let's hope they do it for the rugby world cup and the cricket world cup. Not everything in life is football.

meditrina · 11/07/2018 10:21

Nope, hate the bloody sport - rugby household here.

What I am not however is King Canute.

So yes, I'm going to join in the party (metaphorically, as I'm not invited to any, not being a footie fan) though I might tune in for the latter bit, because a good nail-biting finish could be enjoyable. Not the whole match, as I don't understand enough of what's going on to make sense of what might be happening. But I'm more than happy to get with the mood that's surrounding me in RL.

I was always on the side of wrong but wromatic!

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 11/07/2018 10:34

meditrina

More rugby here as well

Well at least dh prefers the rugby...but he wouldnt miss this either Grin

I think he is leaving work at 3 to miss the traffic

ChrisNReed · 11/07/2018 10:34

Don't take the child to activities.

beeefcake · 11/07/2018 10:36

A public meeting on several speed limits where I live has been postponed.

Troika · 11/07/2018 10:53

OP I for one was delighted that dd’s drama club has been cancelled tonight as otherwise I would have only seen the first 15 mins before I had to pick her up. I would have done it but it’s a lot nicer to not have to.

Obviously now I will be able to drink myself into a stupor and start smashing things up and jumping on cars because that’s what all people who are into football do Hmm

DontMakeMeShushYou · 11/07/2018 11:44

Whilst we're all posting our nice little sarcastic oh-so-funny messages about getting drunk and smashing things up because 'that's what football fans do', we might like to remember that domestic violence increases significantly during the world cup and that it matters not whether England win or lose. So whilst you're all celebrating or commiserating later tonight, perhaps spare a thought for those people (mostly women) across the country who will be suffering violent assaults instead.

Sharkwithknees · 11/07/2018 12:18

Dontmakemeshushyou
What is the relevance of posting that here? Of course it is abhorrent for victims of DV and something that should not be tolerated. Supporting England in the World Cup does not make one complicit in acts of DV.
