To think all children activities should be cancelled on Wednesday?!

I'm hoping so! They should cancel or at least rearrange Brownies/martial arts/gym/swimming, etc!

Either that or lots of parents having to nip out at half time!

It's a historic event, kids should be allowed to watch!

@Justtheonequestion that's not my experience of football. I watch a lower league team and people are not drunk when they watch (they don't allow the bar in the stands to be open long enough and won't let obviously pissed people in).

The drunken culture is more about a group of people getting together with alcohol. I live in Gloucestershire and have to avoid Cheltenham when race week is on as it's full of drunks (usually in red trousers). I accept that's not the behaviour of everyone who enjoys horse racing though as I don't want to stereotype...

arghhhhhhh · 10/07/2018 20:44

@Sharkwithknees me too....especially after that time wasting French player that's just gone off. So frustrating

Sharkwithknees · 10/07/2018 20:52

I know, why?!?

Looks like it's France's victory, awesome match!!

WithTwoGiantBoys · 10/07/2018 20:59

Our primary school had a sweepstake and everyone got a team, they sang three lions in assembly yesterday, our cricket club is showing it and most of the village will be getting involved. It's a lovely atmosphere and everyone is enjoying it. I'm glad cubs is cancelled, the leaders want to watch the match, they are all volunteers and most of the kids won't turn up. If the leaders didn't care and went ahead anyway with a few kids then that would be fine too, but they do care and I don't begrudge them the evening off given all they do for our kids.

ToftyAC · 10/07/2018 21:19

Oh dear god

Confusedbeetle · 10/07/2018 21:24

I am sick to the back teeth of this stupid football interfering in the lives of people who hate football and all the crass behaviour it brings with it. Why should a few rowdy hooligans get in the way of everyone elses life?

Sharkwithknees · 10/07/2018 21:25

Now roll on tomorrow!! Grin

Confusedbeetle · 10/07/2018 21:25

I dont care! Why should childrens activities be forced to join in? From what I can see you are no role models for sport

celticprincess · 10/07/2018 22:05

The gym my children attend for gymnastics is closing on Wednesday and has offered children to join a different day. My daughter doesn’t attend Wednesday so wouldn’t effect us however they’ve previously not allowed children to attend another night due to numbers and health and safety so I do hope this doesn’t mean her class will have too many children in it.

Boulty · 10/07/2018 22:58

Well the event is fairly large and popular with lots of people. As someone said earlier "those trying to belittle the event just remember 37mn are estimated to watch tomorrow , over 50% of the population"
in terms of event, quite big then.

Lots of activities have been changed because quite a lot of people want to watch the national team and support them. Some don't but if the organisers do and cancel then that's up to them. If children miss one week of an activity not too major a deal is it?

manicmij · 10/07/2018 23:22

It's a game of football for goodness sake. Probably 22 millionaires with very little intelligence between them running about an area of grass chasing and kicking a ball. Who wants to cancel their activities for that. Can you guess I had a brother who was a professional footballer and I Hate the game and all it involves nowadays. Behaviour of fans as seen already this week will be even worse if the contest goes on further. It's a game, only a game. Havent seen any reports of riotous behaviour by fans in Russia. Wonder why that is?

starlight13 · 10/07/2018 23:25

Are you for real?

mustbetimeforacreamtea · 10/07/2018 23:28

Tellme has got it exactly right - schools have been bullied into switching days/timings of shows by parents not prepared to support their kids. Our head had to abandon the planned performance because parents were ringing up to say they were pulling their kids out of the summer show because the performance clashed with the footy. The school was faced with potentially not having enough kids to put on the production in the venue they had hired for the night. The children have been rehearsing for months and were very excited about performing at a proper theatre, tickets were relatively expensive due to the cost of hiring the venue.

The decision was taken to put the show on much earlier so that the children wouldn't miss out on the experience but the short notice has meant that lots of parents won't be able to see it because they will be at work. School will be out of pocket due to having to refund tickets. It's really crap for the children whose parents now can't go and who actually wanted to support their kids.

There was 24 years between England’s first and second appearance in a WC semifinal and 28 years between the second and third appearance.

At this rate the next time England gets this far will be in 2042, 2046 or maybe even 2050.

Relax and enjoy it :)

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 10/07/2018 23:37

I was honestly perplexed by this thread title, I had no idea there was a football game on ( but I'm Scottish, and not a football fan!)

Seems a big deal about nothing, but surely if you want to pull your child out of activities it's up to you? Confused

FaFoutis · 10/07/2018 23:41

YABU. My children could not care less about the football game.

Andromeida59 · 10/07/2018 23:50

If I had children I'd be fuming if activities were cancelled. As for it being a historic event? Hardly, the last time was 1990. Quite proud that I've managed to avoid watching any of the the WC so far.

CoffeeCoffeeTea · 11/07/2018 00:09

I agree OP but why stop there; lets just shut the hospitals, transport system, Banks/PostOffice etc. Even the Government has given up.

DiegoMadonna · 11/07/2018 01:14

Right coffee, because that is a totally logical leap.

No Brownies for one week?? Might as well close the hospitals and leave the dying in the streets!!

strawberrisc · 11/07/2018 05:30

Bet you’re SO glad you asked the MN pearl clutchers aren’t you OP 🤣 You even got the classics:
“Overpaid idiots”
“Chasing a bag of air”
“What about female events?”
“What about Rugby?”
“What about the emergency services?”

Oh MNetters. Please never change!

Come on 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

NerrSnerr · 11/07/2018 06:07

If I had children I'd be fuming if activities were cancelled

If your child's activity was run by volunteers who have given up every Wednesday for probably years you'd be fuming because they'd want to watch the football one time?

If it was a business that wasn't on (like swimming lessons etc) I understand and would expect them to run but the athletics coach who does it for free can cancel if they fancy in my opinion.

TheLastNigel · 11/07/2018 06:43

Well obviously all kids activities shouldn't be cancelled. But I guess the leaders of them should expect a lower turn out (and In some cases have moved stuff around as it would be a shame for the kids themselves to have few people in the audience for their play or whatever). It is a fairly big deal to a lot of people (In England. As it would be in Scotland or Wales I'd assume if those two nations were in it-for those moaning about the English hubris Hmm). If you don't like it fair enough but it's silly to pretend that it's of no note or interest to a fairly large proportion of people, rightly or wrongly.

Port1ajazz · 11/07/2018 07:40

I'm sick of this " Everything has to stop for football " thing ! It's pathetic that life in this country stops every time England plays 😒

CasanovaFrankenstein · 11/07/2018 08:11

Life doesn't stop every time England play, this is a bit of an unusual occasion.

babyno5 · 11/07/2018 08:49

Feel your pain OP as I’m nominated gymnastics driver tonight! 😢😢
