To think people genuinely hate England?

Is anyone else sick of seeing the anger/hatred towards England in the World Cup? This 'anyone but england' mentality from almost every other country is disheartening honestly. I've seen every excuse under the sun, we haven't played a proper team yet, 200,000 signatures to re-play the Colombia match because apparently that wasn't fair, blaming a few rowdy fans for not wanting England to win. I'm especially surprised by the amount of Scottish/Irish/Welsh people who seem to feel like this (on social media) i know we'd so be routing for our neighbours if it was the other way round! So... AIBU to think everyone just friggin hates England?!

You know what, this thread is bonkers. So many generalisations and it's really quite disturbing to read. Never judge a nation as a whole, only judge the individuals in it. That's my motto. I cannot fathom judging the whole of Scotland based upon my experiences of racism and anti-English sentiment. I heard it from a lot of people but nowhere near enough to judge every Scottish person because of this.

Most English people are not proud of colonialism (many young people don't even know what this is, trust me!). Most English people are not jumping on ambulances, or 'wrecking their own country' because of football. There are some right idiots out there but the majority of us are pretty normal...

Lots of sweeping statements here and it's saddening to read.

Tbf it’s not just the Scots that hate the English. My DSD reeeeeeeally hates the English. She does caveat this with ‘its ok though stepmum kitty, I like baby kitty but I hate the rest of them’. My DD was born in engerland. Thanks.

rosesandflowers1 · 09/07/2018 19:49

(many young people don't even know what this is, trust me!)

And presumably grow into people like TomPinch?

If you're aware of a young person carrying this level of ignorance, please educate them or at least direct them to a reliable website or the nearest library.

Lweji · 09/07/2018 19:50

Btw, it was the Colombian team that played in the WC.

Belindabauer · 09/07/2018 19:52

Well I'll be supporting England.
Once again Yorkshire proves to be a significant factor 😀
I believe a lot of the team hail from God's own county 😇😇😇😇

KittyVonCatsworth · 09/07/2018 19:52

Oh, my DDD is Welsh btw!

kalapattar · 09/07/2018 19:53

Once again Yorkshire proves to be a significant factor

But what about Lancashire Grin

Belindabauer · 09/07/2018 19:53

Oh and I've watched the past 3 England games in my local town and there has been zero trouble, Beyonce again, that goes unreported.

Belindabauer · 09/07/2018 19:54

Beyonce? = once again.

DeltaG · 09/07/2018 19:54

I thought you might say that. Sorry but no, xenophobia is never acceptable, no matter who the recipient. Just as it isn't acceptable to be sexist towards men either. As I said, unless you're whiter than white, you lose the moral high ground.

No doubt those excusing prejudice towards perfectly reasonable people because they are English and the English have done some bad things, are also as quick to jump to the defence of those who view all Muslims with suspicion, based on the fact that other Muslims have slaughtered innocents in the name of the religion? No????

Belindabauer · 09/07/2018 19:55

I don't know about Lancashire!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 09/07/2018 20:10

but not in living memory. To some nations colonialism is still very raw.

Erm... you do see the weirdness of that statement, don't you?

Name a nation... go on... any nation. There are very few, if any at all, that have not got any unpleasantnesses in their history.

And I would love someone to answer my question: when, what date, do you stop / start taking offence with history?

Degustibusnonestdisputandem1 · 09/07/2018 20:22

@marthaarthur @softlycatchymonkey1 Havent RTFT yet but I get so tired of the Aussie bashing on mumsnet Angry. I'm an Aussie wholly of British descent, living here for the past 11 years. I was brought up with a love of English comedy, literature, a love of the landscape, I could go on.... a lot of the anti British sentiment in Australia began when you joined the EEC and effectively cut off trade ties. NZ fared even worse than us when this happened.

Agustarella · 09/07/2018 20:26

The French like us. Strange but true.

yogaginrepeat · 09/07/2018 20:36

Happened 100 years ago. Not here in Ireland** - it happened over a significant period of time until very recently.

Substitute with polish, Jewish etc when people from these backgrounds have a history of destroying my home country, stopping me speaking my own language, are responsible for civil wars, and even to the current day remain largely ignorant of history, then yeah, I'll judge them too.

stayathomer · 09/07/2018 20:38

*In Ireland and we've been cheering for you in the pubs around here football

I know, it’s weird. This is the first tournament where people have been openly supporting England. Very unlike us 😂 Gareth Southgate seems very popular here! Also Harry Kane having Irish ancestry*
I'm from Ireland too and everyone I know has been saying it would be great for England to win. Also in Eurovision when that lout jumped on and took the Mike from the singer everyone over here was disgusted and saying well done to her. I don't think the English are hated over here at all!

Battytwatty · 09/07/2018 20:39

yogaginrepeat

The Jewish are doing that right now, to palastinians, so judge away

hmcAsWas · 09/07/2018 20:43

Are you sure about that Augustarella? Really? (mind blown)

RoseWhiteTips · 09/07/2018 20:43

The French had an Alliance with you I. The past. Oh wait...lol

hmcAsWas · 09/07/2018 20:44

Alliances in the past were pragmatics - not to do with affectionate regard

RoseWhiteTips · 09/07/2018 20:44

And again :

The French had an Alluance with you in the past. Oh no wait...😂

RoseWhiteTips · 09/07/2018 20:45

Alliance

RoseWhiteTips · 09/07/2018 20:46

hmcAsWas

Are you sure about that Augustarella? Really? (mind blown)

Hahahaha

RoseWhiteTips · 09/07/2018 20:47

Yes, thank you. Obv.🙄
(Re Alliances)

RoseWhiteTips · 09/07/2018 20:50

Tbh @tompinch I agree. I think I should rename this thread to why do Scotland hate England. Because they seem to be the only ones with a big fat chip on their shoulders.

Erm...do you have issues with comprehension?

😳
