To think people genuinely hate England?

Is anyone else sick of seeing the anger/hatred towards England in the World Cup? This 'anyone but england' mentality from almost every other country is disheartening honestly. I've seen every excuse under the sun, we haven't played a proper team yet, 200,000 signatures to re-play the Colombia match because apparently that wasn't fair, blaming a few rowdy fans for not wanting England to win. I'm especially surprised by the amount of Scottish/Irish/Welsh people who seem to feel like this (on social media) i know we'd so be routing for our neighbours if it was the other way round! So... AIBU to think everyone just friggin hates England?!

I’m Irish and yes, the history between England and Ireland is still very raw. I am not some mad raving republican but the attitude of some English people to Irish people is still infuriating to this day!
Back on the first page op asked why are we annoyed over something that happened over 100 years ago, that even shows how little you acknowledge Ireland as a country because 100 years ago Ireland was still under British rule.
On a recent trip to England I was greeted with surprise from a shop assistant when she learned that we use euro in Ireland-“ but isn’t Ireland part of Britain?” , she asked!!! Constantly in the media Irish actors/ sports people are referred to as British and it is very annoying I can tell you.
I think it is just the overall arrogance of English people that grates on the rest of the world, they feel they are still far superior and fail to acknowledge why other countries may dislike them.

I've read up to page 11 of this thread and CBA reading any more.
The anti English sentiment is disgusting. Replace English with Pakistani, Jewish, Polish etc and all hell would break loose.
I'm English from Irish decent (3 generations back). People holding grudges from that long ago can fuck right off. I hope we win this World Cup just to fuck the lot of you off!

RoseWhiteTips · 09/07/2018 18:28

Oh dear. It’s only football.

Lweji · 09/07/2018 18:30

Replace English with Pakistani, Jewish, Polish etc and all hell would break loose.

You do understand the difference, don't you? No? Oh, well...

ButchyRestingFace · 09/07/2018 18:31

Yeah, right. Hmm

And offensive to colonised nations. I can only repeat that all of the UK, as individual nations, has been colonised, a lot, over a very long period of time.

That's why it's ridiculous to try living with your head and heart in the past. What is the date you start / stop taking history personally?

DeltaG · 09/07/2018 18:40

And even if it isn't, we've enjoyed ourselves. There will be bitter xenophobes everywhere; let them stew in their own self-righteous indignation.

corythatwas · 09/07/2018 18:43

You mean like printing SCHADENFREUE all over the front page when Germany got knocked out? Quite agree. Hard to imagine such a thing happening. There would be an uproa...oh, hang on.

DeltaG · 09/07/2018 18:44

You do understand the difference, don't you? No? Oh, well...

Xenophobia is xenophobia, there aren't exceptions. Just because it's against the English doesn't give it some sort of validity.

You need to be whiter than white to take the moral high ground, thus there's no nation on Earth who can claim it.

Battytwatty · 09/07/2018 18:46

Lweji

Can you explain what you mean by that?

Battytwatty · 09/07/2018 18:47

DeltaG

Totally agree

GhostofFrankGrimes · 09/07/2018 18:50

but not in living memory. To some nations colonialism is still very raw.

longwayoff · 09/07/2018 18:52

Yes. Many hate the English for very good reasons to do with wars, colonisation, oppression, suppression of other cultures etc. This is not the same as hating other people because they're foreigners, speak a different language, have a different religion or skin colour etc. Reason versus bigotry. One is a rational response. The other is not. So the reasons are historical.

MissConductUS · 09/07/2018 18:54

@KittyVonCatsworth - Daisy, Mingus and Autumn are all cheering for England.

To think people genuinely hate England?
everythingsgoingtobealright · 09/07/2018 18:59

Yet it seems to be more often and not English people who don't understand stand why other people might not like their nation?

People have different views, so what.
Your football team is doing well, so what.
You're celebrating and people don't like it, so what.

No other country tends to care.

longwayoff · 09/07/2018 19:01

Cats! Dont care where they come from. Hurrah for world cats.

RoseWhiteTips · 09/07/2018 19:04

👍🏻

RoseWhiteTips · 09/07/2018 19:05

It’s not.

jeanc1 · 09/07/2018 19:11

im scottish and i dont hate england, but i do dislike all the hyped up mentality from the media and how some english fans represent themselves, especially when its the world cup.
ive seen a lot of the games and have to turn the sound off as the commentators go on and on about england, when they arent even playing at that time!
in the qualifying games last year up here in scotland we were shown the england games, on STV (which is scottish television, clue in the name right there!), when scotland were playing at the same time, theres no way that would ever happen the other way around!
seeing english fans jump around on an ambulance, destroying an ikea, smashing up bus stops is disgusting, and thats when they won! would it be exactly like the english riots of a few years ago if they lost? dread to think!
i was in holland when the world cup took place in 2010, when they made the final and the atmosphere was completely different, they were so genuinely happy, dancing and singing in the streets, just happy and celebrating their team, which is how it should be.

AWomanIsAnAdultHumanFemale · 09/07/2018 19:16

everyone has taken the opportunity to stick the knife in to the English

Come off it! That’s exactly what you intended when you started the thread. You’ve had an absolute ball with your big wooden spoon start to finish. You wanted a ruck and and you got one. Exactly as planned.

beautifulblue · 09/07/2018 19:17

You're all just repeating yourselves now 🙄 If you want me to believe every other countries fans are well behaved & never cause any grief when they win/lose whilst drunk I'm calling bullshit. Yeah some of the fans behaviour has been in embarrassing but that's all you'll hear in England to no one here is saying they look cool! The media are to blame, the same ones that apparently talk about nothing but England on Scottish tv. That's not the every day English persons fault is it? Just like what our ancestors did isn't our fault either. I don't think England gloat, I just think when you can't stand a nation them celebrating comes across as gloating. & that's not our issue 👍🏼
