To be sick of this 'it's coming home' nonsense

It's not coming home. Who ever said England is home? It makes us look idiotic to the rest of the world. Someone on the radio said they really believe England is going to win this year. The rest of the world must be pissing themselves looking at England cheering over such a mediocre team and having such delusions of grandeur.

It also seems to make people behave like hooligans. I've seen some crazy driving before the matches start, and people were making noise until the early hours last night.

It's just a game! We never get this excited about the olympics, Wimbledon or even Rugby.

We haven't beaten major teams no, but we're in the semi - finals and spain, Germany, Brazil, Portugal, Uruguay aren't.

@chrysalis7

"But Oh my f*k, aren't some of those Swedish people BEAUTIFUL?"

I have more breaking news for you...2+2...=...4!!!

LadyP - I'm with you. Completely boring nonsense. Football, soap operas, reality TV, the whole lot. I really do not get how anyone could care about a bunch of men running around after a ball. I generally do not care much about watching people do things. I'd much rather do something myself.

However I do appreciate the fact that football matches have given me 2 relatively peaceful afternoons: today and whenever the last game was, when DH and I, and the kids, were able to enjoy various parks and activities which were much less busy than normal! :) so my ideal world would be :less annoying chanting but more regular useless games that a lot of people want to watch, leaving me to enjoy my week-end better :) everyone's happy that way!

Looking at the Croatia and Russia game, we're at least in the finals 😁

footballscominghomexxx · 07/07/2018 19:48

I agree with the comparing to the Olympics. Football is a sport and anyone who has played it, running up and down a huge pitch, will appreciate the skill and level of fitness required to play a match at this level (and in this heat!). Often football has been caught up with behaviour off the pitch which is fair but a huge shame, but so far the matches have been about the sport.

surferjet · 07/07/2018 19:51

Agree AlphaBravo!

RainySeptember · 07/07/2018 19:51

I think it's absolutely fair enough to hate football or not give a fuck about the World Cup. If it's not your thing then it's not your thing and you're not going to join in no matter how many people suggest you do. But what I can't understand is why seeing other people enjoying themselves and happy would irritate you quite so much op. Honestly, life is short, let people take enjoyment where they can and indulge them rather than sneering at them.

GameOfMinges · 07/07/2018 19:52

A quick google would've taught you that England is 'home' for football because the modern game of association football was codified here and traces origins to the medieval game. This is a different point from the undoubted fact that games involving kicking balls were played in a number of cultures long before there's any record of them being played here. People quite often mix the two up and thus come to the incorrect conclusion that the game we call football isn't an English creation. But those other ball kicking games are not where association football descends from.

FaFoutis · 07/07/2018 19:53

When is the next match? It was lovely and peaceful out today, I'm looking forward to the next one.

YearOfYouRemember · 07/07/2018 19:54

I've just seen a video of the Bands of the Royal Guards Division playing It's Coming Home and it sounded great.

oblada · 07/07/2018 19:56

Faf - I think there is a game on Sunday for the final if England gets there. It's a bit annoying as my husband is away then so it does take a bit out of the enjoyment of a peaceful afternoon that I have all 3 kids to myself and presumably no friend who wants to come over (as they'll want to watch the football!) Ha well :)

The80sweregreat · 07/07/2018 19:57

Next England match is wed night at seven. So ( at least) 4 hours of easy driving around.

HollyGibney · 07/07/2018 19:57

And if I'm totally honest, I'm finding it hilarious how wound up and defensive some people are getting over their special little game! Chill out. Enjoy. I'm off to watch Corrie on catch up. Cheers 🍻

😁 you sound more uptight than anyone else in the thread.

FaFoutis · 07/07/2018 20:03

Thanks obla and 80s. So Wednesday evening and Sunday we should have the world to ourselves for a while again.

Iamtryingtobenicehere · 07/07/2018 20:08

Who ever said England is home? It makes us look idiotic to the rest of the world.

England is the home of football. It was invented here in 1863 I think. You just made yourself look absolutely idiotic.

So I get it, you don’t like football, you don’t speak for everyone else.

It’s coming home.

LavenderDoll · 07/07/2018 20:11

Sorry just had to add

ITS COMING HOME ITS COMING HOME
FOOTBALLS COMING HOME

OP fine not to enjoy but don't try and piss on people's parades

ITS COMING HOME

HunterofStars · 07/07/2018 20:16

YABU. Let people enjoy it. I've had football's coming home in my head since 11am when my ndn played it loudly and sung along to it. Now listening to people singing it as they walk past.

Go England! Football

mydogisthebest · 07/07/2018 20:29

I don't know where all the empty roads, shops etc are but they are certainly not where I live

Weedinosaurus · 07/07/2018 20:32

It's totally coming home OP and there's nothing you can do about it 🙌🏻🏆⚽️

Chill out and enjoy it. The sun is out, people are happy... Let's just enjoy it. Plenty misery another day.

bsbabas · 07/07/2018 20:56

Its means the world cup is coming home to be displayed at the england home turf

TheFormerMrsPugwash · 07/07/2018 21:01

I can't be doing with Wimbledon or the Olympics, either. The Olympics is perhaps even more boring than football, though doesn't seem to bring out the thuggish tribalism in quite the same way.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 07/07/2018 21:12

God there's some miserable gits on Mumsnet! Some people just seem to begrudge others having fun. YABU OP and also one of the aforementioned miserable gits!
