Wedding day....England are playing?????

arghhhhhhh · 04/07/2018 15:11

Just been on fb and someone I know (though not well and I am nit invited to the wedding!) is getting married on Saturday. Obviously England are playing.

She has it a status on saying she has had multiple requests from guests wanting to know if the football will be shown.

Her status basically says she's angry at the messages she's had and under no circumstances will the football be shown. It's her wedding and the day is about that and that only. She's asked that no one checks their phones during the match and is even going to have a sign made for when people enter the venue as a reminder it's a football free zone.

Now she's had a fair few comments - a couple even say they wouldn't attend if they were invited due to her attitude.

What's everyone's opinions?

Me personally, I'd show it! I love football though, I've followed the World Cup through out and I'd be gutted if I couldn't watch it! I'd be making arrangements with the venue to make sure it's on.

The atmosphere would be amazing. I'd be jumping around with everyone else in my dress.....

Also a great way to break up the day. The day goes so fast for the bride and groom but the day guests....it can be such a long and tiring day. What a great way to break up the day!

Also, we are doing well, we haven't been in this situation where we may actually have a good chance of WINNING!!!! for years and probably never will again. The whole country is routing for them. Even people who don't like football are into it. I just don't think it's fair to expect people not to watch it, or not even check their phones!

Saying that....I do understand this lady's frustrations. She's been planning this wedding for over a year. I got married quite recently and know the stress etc of planning....but yeah, wouldn't make any difference to me. I'd be so excited for it to be shown!

Opinions? Is she being unreasonable? It's her and her partners day at the end of it.....I'd be worried my guests wouldn't show up though....

how does a football match impact on lives apart from those of the players????

spectator sport is just live tv. clue - spectator. passive observer of no importance. fun to watch but thats it.

starshineangelxx · 07/07/2018 20:04

i'll always remember where i was in 1966, i was working in a shop down a market which totally exploded with cheers when we won and i dont even like football but i watched it today and if we're in the final i'll watch it then

HateIsNotGood · 07/07/2018 20:07

cheeky that was very nice of you - and yes you can enjoy big matches on your own - I keep it to a Yessss! (goal) get it in (near goal) and the odd laugh at the enthusiastic commentary.

England played really well today and it was a good, clean football match - no cards, injuries or contretemps from either side.

Like weddings for the guests. Wink
The problem is when the bride and groom don't realise that.

TheMonkeyMummy · 07/07/2018 22:20

@ReanimatedSGB that is a really good post and I hadn't thought about it from that point of view at all. Thanks for that.

TheMonkeyMummy · 07/07/2018 22:24

I hope the wedding went well and the bride relaxed her 'no checking football on the phone' rule!

30 million watched the Sweden vs England match today. (Where England beat Sweden.)

And England ground to halt as a record 30 MILLION watched World Cup match with Sweden

www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/world-cup-england-grinds-halt-12870543

Nearly 25 million watched England play Colombia earlier in the week...

We have not got this far for 28 years.

Bars rammed, streets empty, not a soul in sight ...

And motorways deserted

www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/worldcup/world-cup-2018-roads-deserted-as-fans-flock-to-watch-match-a3881931.html

YEAH no-one is interested in the World Cup ARE they?! 😂😂😂

Fucking hell there are some preposterous and ridiculous fuckers on here!!!

Just go with it and admit you're wrong! Grin

The more you deny it, the more pathetic and daft you're looking.

Seriously, just stop!!! 😂😂😂

Princesstwilightsparkle · 07/07/2018 23:36

Yep football is popular. Does everyone like it? Umm no. Please accept that football lovers, it's for you, not for people like me.

I hope the bride had a nice day after all & that her guests didn't make her feel like she was inconveniencing them. It wasn't until the other week this scenario would even have become a reality, so far too late to rearrange your average wedding (how bloody dare she arrange a wedding on a Saturday in July huh! What was she thinking lolWink).

This competition happens every few years people.

nocoolnamesleft · 07/07/2018 23:54

Well, the UK population is around 65.6 million. So less than half watched?

Even if you just go with the population of England, that's about 53 million. So even if everyone who watched it was in England, that would still only be about 56%.

Clearly quite a lot of us didn't.

Lweji · 08/07/2018 00:26

Even if you just go with the population of England, that's about 53 million. So even if everyone who watched it was in England, that would still only be about 56%.

You're not counting young children and people who couldn't watch for one reason or another (such as work).

Honeyroar · 08/07/2018 00:39

I was on the motorway at 3pm, I was hoping they'd be deserted, they weren't. I also drove past a lot of pubs with beer gardens that I expected to be empty while everyone was inside watching the football, but they weren't, they were full of people enjoying the sun like any other hot day. Yes I'm sure there were lots of people watching, but don't be fooled by The Mirror and the Sun that the country ground to a halt, because it didn't. I wouldn't even have known what time kick off was without this thread. Good for you if you're enjoying the football, but appreciate the other side too, there's plenty of us around, just like there's plenty enjoying it..

RainbowsAndSmiles · 08/07/2018 00:41

Well, the UK population is around 65.6 million. So less than half watched?

Oh come off it, approx 30 million watched today. That is a MASSIVE viewing figure.
can't believe I'm defending football, I'm not even a fan but hoping England win lol

ColdCottage · 08/07/2018 00:41

I agree with the bride.

I'd not even give any sporting fixture a thought when planning my wedding.

CheekyCapsicum · 08/07/2018 00:55

how does a football match impact on lives apart from those of the players????

It has impact on those who live their lives vicariously through their sporting heroes. Their happiness or unhappiness depends upon how well their sporting heroes disport themselves. Maybe it injects some purpose or excitement into their lives. Maybe if their team wins they feel somehow more masculine and important. Who knows?

It's a mystery to me. Whether England won or lost today has no import in my life, but if it's made some people happy, then I'm passively pleased for them If Sweden had won I'd be equally passively pleased for them as well.

I suppose I wish that Sweden had won, because then we wouldn't have to put up with all this ridiculous malarkey for another week.

I'll just have to put off going in to the town centre for a week or so.
It's chock full of chunky drunken knobby blokes waving England flags and shouting obscenities at any woman under 30.

I know not everybody is like that. But UUGHH. , they are the people representing football fans, in most city centres.
Leeds is pretty awful to go into at the moment, Loads of trouble. All attributed to football fans. I have to walk through town from work every night, and this world cup malarkey has brought out a load of football obsessed drunks, who clearly have no filter when it comes to abusing innocent walkers by.

I just want it to be all over very quickly, and I don't care who wins.
Because win or lose. the level of fighting and drunkenness is exactly the same.

BuggeringNora · 08/07/2018 01:20

I do hate this absolute bullshit peddled by the low rent media about the 'empty roads' and 'deserted supermarkets' whenever we play. I left work at the exact moment we kicked off against Colombia and the traffic was no different to any other day ie. the roads were rammed as usual, (Central London). Even when I got out of town and got on the motorway it was as busy as it is any other day. I do wish they'd stop trying to whip people up into even more of a frenzy by making up such shite.

CheekyCapsicum · 08/07/2018 01:25

Cheeky that was very nice of you

Well I am a nice person. And I genuinely felt it was the right thing to do, to plonk him in front of the telly, poor chap. He obviously wanted to watch it so I manipulated the situation to make it ok. I made it look like I'd persuaded him to go in and watch it. So the other guests who weren't bothered (which was all of them) saw me persuading him indoors. (Not much against his will) His wife was a bit embarrassed. But it was all ok.

I think that although England won, he was frustrated by the lack of debriefing when it had finished and he'd found his way back out.
He told us that England had won, obviously, but he was robbed of any post match chat. Nobody was really arsed either way.

But he came to our bbq and was welcome, and he got to watch the footy and nobody minded and then everybody drank some more and it all got forgotten, and then he went home and presumably watched the whole match again which he had recorded and all was well.

CheekyCapsicum · 08/07/2018 01:38

And England ground to halt as a record 30 MILLION watched World Cup match with Sweden

England did not grind to a halt. Town centre was heaving with people who thought it was going to be a quiet spell. Which it turned out not to be.

England didn't even grind to a halt between 1939 and 1945 and that was a grudge match. Get a grip.

squeekums · 08/07/2018 02:11

@likeacrow
Do people not find it exciting to be invited to a wedding?!
Not really no, ive never even dreamed of my own wedding. I dont see the point, i dont need some fancy party, piece of paper or a crowd of people to know who i love or will be with forever. To me a wedding is trying to convince people you love the other person
I hate the dictation of what one has to wear also

@TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross
Now that last sentence, I can believe. If you’re that rude, I’d rather you weren’t there as well
Nephews dad thanked me for coming actually knowing i had to watch the footy on my phone, even said i should have asked o use the office or shed tv to be comfy. He understands its 2 hours out of the whole day, nephew didnt even notice

Fevs · 08/07/2018 02:14

IT’S COMING HOME! 😆

Slarti · 08/07/2018 02:15

We have not got this far for 28 years.

That can't be right surely. 1990 was only a decade ago (in my head) Blush

AdventuresRUs · 08/07/2018 02:58

It was pretty empty down here (tourist destination not city.) Place we'd chosen to go was closed- it rarely closes but closed so staff could watch football (family run!).

We went into 2 large camping shops - both deserted! The normally busy roads to the big shopping centre were clear.

The only downside was the country park we went to for a walk has a lovely splash area.... that was closed for a wedding!!

CheekyCapsicum · 08/07/2018 03:36

but don't be fooled by The Mirror and the Sun that the country ground to a halt, because it didn't

Of course it didn't. Low quality news source. I regularly do their 20 minute crossword in less than 5 minutes. Ergo, they think I am slow of thought and a bit dim. So they can also report whatever they like and think I'll believe it. The newspaper gets delivered to my place of work. I don't actually purchase it myself. I am in the process of persuading my manager to have a real newspaper delivered.

My dd arrived home this aft, from 200 miles away. Late, because of traffic hold ups on the A14, She specifically chose this weekend and this time to travel because she hoped the roads would be quieter.
They were not. It was probably busier than usual because of people who thought they could take advantage of this silly WC malarkey, and it didn't work. Who could have knew?
There's been nothing in my street, town, city, local rail station, or general neighbourhood, to evidence anything grinding to a halt. Nothing at all has ground or grinded to a halt. Infrequent buses are still running infrequently. Infrequent trains likewise. But nothing different.

Country grinding to a halt because of a football match? I don't think so.

And England ground to halt as a record 30 MILLION watched World Cup match with Sweden

All made up crap by tabloid press. I know loads of people who watched it, and I know loads of people who didn't, because they don't care either way. Absolutely nothing has ground or grinded to a halt.
What very, very silly people these football fanatics are.
Even if England should win the world cup, it'll be forgotten in a week, Everyone will go back to their day job and it will be like nothing has happened. They won't be any happier. The England team might be a bit richer in monetary terms, but their fans will just go back to their day jobs and nothing will change for them.

They can sit at their lathe,or their packing station or in their office, and think, "Oh, England won the world cup last week" But what does that mean in their lives, really? Fuck all, is the answer. England winning the WC will change absolutely nothing at all for these people.

It's such an empty victory, I feel desperately sorry for those on here who stress such importance on something so inconsequential as the result of a 'football match'

Leeds was absolutely fine yesterday. Perfectly pleasant to walk through after the football. As was Manchester.

The trains were deserted though which was fab Smile

chocolateworshipper · 08/07/2018 07:30

DH was accosted by a drunken football fan yesterday, who said "you know what's going to happen don't you? England's coming home." DH walked off assuming that England had lost if they were on their way home. Drunken fan presumably meant "football's coming home." A quick Google shows claims that football was actually invented in Scotland / Italy / Australia / China. So drunken fan couldn't even correctly quote a probably incorrect phrase. Obviously there are plenty of perfectly decent football fans, but people like that guy don't help the reputation of football fans.

And England ground to halt

It very seriously didn't. I feel sorry for anyone that fell for that. If you were watching the football, you wouldn't have had a clue what was going on, would you? A lot of us that thought we were being terribly clever by going out to get stuff done whilst it was quiet, got a nasty shock when we found that we weren't the only ones that had had that idea!

chocolateworshipper · 08/07/2018 07:35

Bloody hell - I've just seen the news. Forget drunken fan I mentioned above, there are much, much worse fans out there. An ambulance - I mean WHY???? Angry Angry
