Wedding day....England are playing?????

arghhhhhhh · 04/07/2018 15:11

Just been on fb and someone I know (though not well and I am nit invited to the wedding!) is getting married on Saturday. Obviously England are playing.

She has it a status on saying she has had multiple requests from guests wanting to know if the football will be shown.

Her status basically says she's angry at the messages she's had and under no circumstances will the football be shown. It's her wedding and the day is about that and that only. She's asked that no one checks their phones during the match and is even going to have a sign made for when people enter the venue as a reminder it's a football free zone.

Now she's had a fair few comments - a couple even say they wouldn't attend if they were invited due to her attitude.

What's everyone's opinions?

Me personally, I'd show it! I love football though, I've followed the World Cup through out and I'd be gutted if I couldn't watch it! I'd be making arrangements with the venue to make sure it's on.

The atmosphere would be amazing. I'd be jumping around with everyone else in my dress.....

Also a great way to break up the day. The day goes so fast for the bride and groom but the day guests....it can be such a long and tiring day. What a great way to break up the day!

Also, we are doing well, we haven't been in this situation where we may actually have a good chance of WINNING!!!! for years and probably never will again. The whole country is routing for them. Even people who don't like football are into it. I just don't think it's fair to expect people not to watch it, or not even check their phones!

Saying that....I do understand this lady's frustrations. She's been planning this wedding for over a year. I got married quite recently and know the stress etc of planning....but yeah, wouldn't make any difference to me. I'd be so excited for it to be shown!

Opinions? Is she being unreasonable? It's her and her partners day at the end of it.....I'd be worried my guests wouldn't show up though....

Ha ha chocolate. That’s what my mum has done

wizzywig · 07/07/2018 16:30

Enjoy Barbara it sounds so civilised where you are

NotAnotherNoughtiesTune · 07/07/2018 16:31

Okay maybe they will win then Grin

CheekyCapsicum · 07/07/2018 16:32

New neighbour has checked his phone, and was behaving like a cat on hot bricks. I've offered him the living room telly for the second half.
The wife looks mortified. I've reassured her not to be daft. It's fine.
He's in there on his own and nobody has followed. Am wondering if he feels a bit silly now. You can't really jump up and down and cheer on your own. Can you? Oh well. I've been as good a new neighbour as I can. Going in there and watching it with him is a step I'm not prepared to take.

HairyToity · 07/07/2018 16:34

At a wedding today. Football showing. About 10% watching.

chocolateworshipper · 07/07/2018 16:43

But cheeky and hairy - you must, somehow, be mistaken? I have been assured that everyone is interested in the World Cup. Apart from me. And you. And all the shoppers in Asda earlier. And all the drivers I saw on the road earlier. And the people eating in the cafe I went to. And DH and all the other people at the big event he's at today where they can't watch football. Wink

starshineangelxx · 07/07/2018 16:56

ENGLAND WON! so up yours worriedmum and all others that said they would probably lose:)

ShakespearesSisters · 07/07/2018 16:58

Whoop whoop!

JacquesHammer · 07/07/2018 17:00

Well, well, well. The tedium continues Grin

chocolateworshipper · 07/07/2018 17:01

To the football fans who are not bigots (and I know most of you are not): congratulations. I don't like football myself, but happy you're happy.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 07/07/2018 17:10

The tedium continues

Not here it doesn't Wink An "open garden" event in the village has just ended, where folk visit each other, selling teas and so on for charity, and despite dire predictions everyone's been packed out

It must have been all those who don't give a damn about football ... you know, the people we're told hardly exist Grin

HappyLollipop · 07/07/2018 17:11

Yay! footballs coming home Grin

Honeyroar · 07/07/2018 17:16

I wonder what happened at the wedding? At least her guests won't be miserable and sulking because they lost anyway!

When is the next game? I've got a wedding to go to next weekend, hope there's not a big screen.

FootballsComingHome · 07/07/2018 17:16

It’s getting closer 😂⚽️😘

GameOfMinges · 07/07/2018 17:19

but when England lose those same fans will destroy any happy mood because 24 men kicking a ball around a gloried garden will effect there mood so most hard core fans cannot separate disappointment that their spot team lost so would think nothing of being grumpy at the wedding / might leave early as why celebrate because their team lost etc.

Also, public places are never as empty as you think they're going to be when there's a big event on. I eagerly anticipated having the supermarket to myself when the Royal Wedding was on, and the place was fucking packed. Rude!

Here's hoping the guests weren't subjected to too much abuse for checking their phones...

GameOfMinges · 07/07/2018 17:21

If it's the Saturday honeyroar, it'll be the 3rd place playoff which England will be in if they lose the semi, so it's a possibility.

Oysterbabe · 07/07/2018 17:22

🎵It's coming home, it's coming.... 🎵

waterlego6064 · 07/07/2018 17:27

Anyone watching the tennis?

Cagliostro · 07/07/2018 17:31

That was a great game, would’ve been great to have at the wedding, nice cheerful atmosphere. :o

ReadingRiot · 07/07/2018 17:38

Meeee Waterlego.

Painted the shed this morning, watched footie, Edmund game timed just right (no extra time!) and another game to watch later. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday.

Endland in the Wimbledon final and the WC final at the same time on the same day? Couldn't make it up

chocolateworshipper · 07/07/2018 18:58

I know - didn't Nadal do well?

I do have friends who are going abroad tomorrow and getting married Wednesday - again not going to this one! But they have about 40 friends and family who are. Honestly the excitement between them all is amazing. I'm jealous! We were invited but I'm too pregnant to fly unfortunately.

But the bride is so excited, she's already contacted the hotel to make sure they can show the game. Her fb status is the opposite to the original one I posted about. They get married at 5pm, they will actually be sat down to eat when it's on and she can't wait - my kind of bride!

Her wedding has virtually no impact in their lives

Like, some other blokes winning a football match in another country will change their lives forever. That makes complete sense.

GrinGrin
You missed the point there. The first comment was in relation to comments like yours in the thread saying that whether England loses or wins has no impact in people's lives. And... neither does whether the wedding.

ReadingRiot · 07/07/2018 19:52

Also ask anyone where they were in 1966, witnessing that will have had far more impact on their lives than (almost) any wedding they've ever attended
