To think these plans for the Queen's death are a bit OTT?

I won't link it unless asked as it's a DM article [thblush]

But included in the plans apparently is ten days of national mourning - and radio stations have a list on standby of "sad, respectful" songs to play during this time?

I quite like the Queen but if I put the radio on I expect pop music not sad depressing stuff Confused

Name one person in the WORLD that has done more for their country than she has!

Nelson Mandela?

Nye Bevin?

ReanimatedSGB · 02/07/2018 08:48

Getting rid of the monarchy wouldn't have a negative impact on tourism. Tourists come to see the buildings more than the people.

As to those calling for a public vote: when she dies I think perhaps we should have a referendum on whether to abolish the monarchy or not (we don't need to execute them all, obviously - they all have homes and enough money to live comfortably as private citizens.)

rosesgarden · 02/07/2018 09:00

>>Name one person in the WORLD that has done more for their country than she has!
Let's see....every single person who contributes to her keep? Don't be ridiculous, a bloody bus driver does more for the country than what she queen does. Do you really think what she does contributes any real worth to our country.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 02/07/2018 09:03

Nelson Mandela, a terrorist spent 27 years in prison then 6 years serving his country. No where near the Queens 65 years service.

Nye Bevan was an MP for 31 years, still nothing on the Queen.

KateMiddletonsOtherMum · 02/07/2018 09:03

The old ones are always the best.

SneakyGremlins · 02/07/2018 09:35

Okay, A) I'm not a daily mail reader, I read ONE article. And B) - I don't have a huge chip on my shoulder Hmm I wasn't sure what national mourning meant and I thought and still do that ten days for someone the majority of the country is indifferent about is a bit much.

So it's purely how long someone held a job for then? No matter how easy the job?

ajandjjmum · 02/07/2018 10:01

Every day she has a box of paperwork to go through and deal with - even when she is on holiday. It's not just appearances and waving.

Even if there is someone placing each piece of paper in front of her, and discussing it's content, she still has to read/approve/sign. Not many 92 year olds still have that work commitment.

LuMarie · 02/07/2018 10:04

Not many people make it to 92, because they don't have the privilege of health care, whilst paying for hers!

pigsDOfly · 02/07/2018 10:22

Well, however hard she works, as pp said it can't be that hard if she's able to do it into her 90s. Unlike the poor sods who are having to work full time well into their 70s because they can't afford to eat and heat their homes on the pitiful pension they get after a lifetime of paying taxes.

And the pp who said she doesn't get to spend any money on herself. What about her horses and her dogs. I'm pretty sure she is able to have all the things she wants for herself. Okay, she can't go down the high street to shop but, trust me, she doesn't go without.

And as for private down time. Of course she has time away from the public gaze. She has numerous homes surrounded by many acres of land in which to spend her down time and be away from the public.

And no, she hasn't done more for her country than anyone else in the world. Being on the throne for over 60 year and living a life of unadulterated privileged doesn't make for someone who is giving their all to their country. It makes for someone who takes from their country on a grand scale and has a bloody fine time.

rosesgarden · 02/07/2018 10:40

>>Name one person in the WORLD that has done more for their country than she has!

You know what, that statement is, as well as being outrageously ridiculous is an insult to all the thousands of dedicated teachers, nurses, firefighters and armed forces etc (many who lost their lives) and all the rest of the heroes of our country, who get comparatively little in return, .but you're saying this privileged, extremely well looked after woman, surrounded by servants and sycophants has done more? Absolutely not!! Shock

The fact that she's still in good health and is active is testament to her being so well cared for. Nobody is forcing her to stay on the throne so long, the fact that she still is shows how much she enjoys her exalted position, stop fooling yourself it's hard work. If it was, you can be certain she wouldn't still be doing it.

Women of the Uk will be expected to work till their late sixties before they get their pension, the queens "work" will not take take a toll on her body in the same way. I admire women (and men) that have to struggle on with all their aches and pains in hard badly paid jobs, waiting to get their long awaited pension. I certainly don't admire the queen.

I'll add reading to the list of "hard work" she does.

Is that you LizGrin

One has to sit through BBC birthday "parties" for one with Garybloody Barlow hinting at a knighthood and when one doesn't look terribly pleased, one's resting bitch face is dissected all over Mumsnet.

I'm looking forward to that pitiful pension because it's more than the government pay me for my job.

ReanimatedSGB · 02/07/2018 13:17

'Hard work' my arse. She's an expensive parasite, however well-intentioned she might, as an individual, be.

Xenia · 02/07/2018 13:20

She has been our monarch for so long and it is so good for us just to switch off normal life, have a different kind of and day. I think national mourning would do the nation the world of good even for those who don't like the monarchy. It would also help us ensure we make everyone come together as a nation and perhaps even weed out those not committed to our nation who are living in our midst wanting to do us down and our values.

Sunnymeg · 02/07/2018 13:24

All of this will have been based on plans written years and years ago, that were last used in 1952 as this is the way it has always been done. The 10 days of official mourning will give those who wish to, the chance to file respectfully past the Queen's coffin at Westminster Hall, before the funeral takes place. It's the way it has been done previously, we are just so removed from the protocol as it hasn't been used since George VI died.

thor86 · 02/07/2018 13:36

It would also help us ensure we make everyone come together as a nation and perhaps even weed out those not committed to our nation who are living in our midst wanting to do us down and our values.

Sounds a bit ominous. A purge of those of us who don't shed any tears over the death of woman we've never met who has had a very long and privileged life?

goose1964 · 02/07/2018 13:37

I had to work the day of Diana's funeral, unfortunately they had it on the TV, I had to sit at the front end of the office so I could read my book in peace.

I cannot imagine sitting through all the histrionics again. Thank of for sky cinema, and the American channels which will probably continue showing NCIS wall to wall

Battleax · 02/07/2018 13:41

Like a pogrom? Of republicans?

Where are we going to drive them all to? The Isle Of Man?

pigsDOfly · 02/07/2018 13:48

user546425732. Yes pitiful. The maximum state pension has just gone up to £164.35 per week - that's maximum, so that's with any other entitlements added on.

Plenty of older people who have worked all their lives don't have work related pensions and so will only have their state pension to live on.

I really don't believe that if you're working in a full time job you are earning less than £8,546 a year; I suspect that would be illegal.

pigsDOfly · 02/07/2018 13:49

Ah unless, you're a full time carer, another group of people who have been forgotten.
