To think these plans for the Queen's death are a bit OTT?

I won't link it unless asked as it's a DM article [thblush]

But included in the plans apparently is ten days of national mourning - and radio stations have a list on standby of "sad, respectful" songs to play during this time?

I quite like the Queen but if I put the radio on I expect pop music not sad depressing stuff Confused

The empire did most certainly have a foundation in slavery. Slavery was not abolished until 1833 in English law.

Numerous British people became exceptionally wealthy from the slave trade.

LankinMcElf · 02/07/2018 01:38

The monarchy are a symbol, they are bound by constitutional law. Back to my comment about daily mail readers.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 02/07/2018 01:38

She's massively rewarded for those 65 years of privilege. They cost us a fortune.

What was her reward? She has been working FULL time into her nineties. She has never had a second of privacy in her life, kept in a gilded prison. She might be 'rich' but she could never spend any of her money on herself, she might as well have been a pauper and she brought more money into this country that she was ever given. I think she should be sainted for her life long service to our country.

Name one person in the WORLD that has done more for their country than she has!

LankinMcElf · 02/07/2018 01:40

This whole post has turned into a rant about the monarchy. The original post was a big moan about the the fact that when our dear queen dies someone was fucked off about the radio not playing what she wanted for 10 days.

Birdsgottafly · 02/07/2018 01:42

""well I’m bloody proud! QE2 is the great, great granddaughter of one of the finest monarchs ever! Are you in any way aware of what Q.V. achieved during her reign?
We used to be a powerful empire, it’s all going tits up and our wonderful queen is one the last vestiges of pride we have left.""

I often think that if Queen Victoria was a nicer (and more sane) Women then the history of Europe and the World Wars would have been completely different. Prince Phillip is also a direct descendant of QV, him and Liz are second Cousins once removed.

The powerful Empire was based on slavery, exploitation, murder, torture and misery. So best not celebrated, really.

Having said that, I like having a Royal Family. It is part of the UK's History and no-one quite does it like us.

I was gutted that I was seriously ill and couldn't see the Queen and Prince Phillip when they came to my City, last year.

It's the end of an Era and an important change for the Country.

10 days, is about right. The pomp and ceremony is going to be expected by the rest of the World and we should show them an example of what we are the best at.

I really feel for the Queen, with the declining health of Phillip. on the face of it, she'll carry on as normal, but internally, it may be the thing that brings here ending, quicker.

I never got the worshiping of Lady Diana. Her death, for me, was only significant, by the effect it had on her Sons and it freed Charles up to marry the Woman he should have been allowed to.

LankinMcElf · 02/07/2018 01:43

Walkingdeadfangirl beautifully said! Thanks for that, I was getting a bit narky and cross, you came in with a bit of sense

LellyMcKelly · 02/07/2018 01:43

I wouldn’t mind sad reflective songs. Bit of Radiohead, bit of Elbow, bit of Fergeal Sharkey, bit of Elton. Sounds alright to me.

Birdsgottafly · 02/07/2018 01:46

Walkingdeadfangirl, as much as I am a fan of the Queen. people have lost their lives for this Country.

There were Mothers whose multiple Son's were killed in action etc. My Grandmother told me tails of the injuries she saw from civilian bombing, including still births. Men died carrying out building work, or was put in an early grave working mines etc.

That was a crass comment.

LankinMcElf · 02/07/2018 01:46

Birdsgottafly nicely put

rosesgarden · 02/07/2018 01:55

She hasn't brought more money than she's taken out at all. How ridiculous to suggest that. If it's the tourist thing, that's nonsense. Of course she's well rewarded, millions of pounds, umpteen palaces and unbelievable privilege. The royal family cost us an absolute fortune, they don't have to do much in return. The queen dies not work "full time" at all. She has servants for every single need. The reason she's still active and robust is purely because she's never had to "work" . Most women of her age can hardly walk, testament to their years of hard toil.

LankinMcElf · 02/07/2018 01:58

rosegarden with respect, bollocks, you wanna see my mil. The queen has worked fucking hard all her life

EdWinchester · 02/07/2018 02:07

The queen has worked fucking hard all her life

This is both insulting to those who work and hilarious. Fawn over her or find the establishment ridiculous, no one could actually say the queen has ‘worked hard’.

Birdsgottafly · 02/07/2018 02:14

Whether you think the Queen has worked hard, she has devoted her life to what she considers her "duty".

It's the Royal Advisers who pull the strings and they have got it very wrong on occasions. They are the real "Establishment".

The Royals are puppets. I'd rather live on Income Support than have their lives. The Grandchildren are quite fortunate. Zara seems very happy.

Watching them reminds me of the book "Never let me go" It's very much a half life, in lots of ways.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 02/07/2018 02:23

as much as I am a fan of the Queen. people have lost their lives for this Country
Ummm yes, and the queen is the personification of the armed forces and ALL those that have died for this country.

We would be mourning for our Monarch, The Commander-in-Chief, not an individual person.

Twillow · 02/07/2018 02:29

I'm not even a royalist but she has been the longest reigning British monarch and deserves a bit of a show for that. I will be in mourning for more than 10 days if that hypocrite Prince Charles becomes King...

Birdsgottafly · 02/07/2018 03:14

"Ummm yes, and the queen is the personification of the armed forces and ALL those that have died for this country."

I'm sure that's a comfort to anyone being told that their loved one is missing in action etc.

Ordinary people have done a lot more for this Country, than she has.

It was the suggestion that "on-one has done more", that I said was crass.

It's by the blood, skills, sweat and tears of the people that the Empire was born and this Country held it's place in the World.

Mummyoflittledragon · 02/07/2018 05:06

I think the Queen’s successor should should be elected. Charles can stand, William could stand if he likes. Let the people decide (like Brexit).

We that wins stupid comment of the week. Grin

brizzledrizzle · 02/07/2018 06:19

Name one person in the WORLD that has done more for their country than she has!

Let me think....we have clean running water in many countries, famine relief programmes, electricity, vaccinations, medical care, the work of people like MSF, doctors, teachers, nurses, we have antibiotics, we have peace in so many countries, democracy in many - the list is endless.

Bibesia · 02/07/2018 06:53

I think it's fair enough to say the Queen has worked hard given that she's still working in her 90s.

KateMiddletonsOtherMum · 02/07/2018 06:57

So, this is Camilla's joke (spoiler alert, it's rude, look away now if you're easily offended)

It's 1969 and Neil Armstrong has arrived back safely and steps into the interview room. "Good luck, Mr Ubansky," he says.

Everyone, for years, asks him who Mr Ubansky is but Neil won't say.

Years and years, no one knows who Mr Ubansky is.

Then, finally, Neil elaborates:

"I was 12 years old and I was playing outside in my garden. The upstairs window of the next door neighbours house was open and I heard Mrs Ubansky say "Mr Ubansky - the day I give you a blow job is the day the boy next door walks on the moon!"

Good luck, Mr Ubansky."

MissusGeneHunt · 02/07/2018 07:24

As long as Brian May doesn't stand on top of Buck House doing a rendition of the National Anthem, I'm happy with the arrangements.... Wink

SimonBridges · 02/07/2018 07:57

That is a really old joke.
I hope you laughed politely.

thor86 · 02/07/2018 08:01

I think it's fair enough to say the Queen has worked hard given that she's still working in her 90s.

I think it's fair enough to assume the work can't be nearly as hard as some people like to claim if she can still do it into her 90s. She basically waves, reads speeches she probably didn't write herself, and shows face at some events.

LakieLady · 02/07/2018 08:09

Name one person in the WORLD that has done more for their country than she has!

Nelson Mandela?

LuMarie · 02/07/2018 08:18

Name one person in the WORLD that has done more for their country than she has!

Every allied soldier in WWs?

That would be for "all" countries, not just their own.
