To think these plans for the Queen's death are a bit OTT?

I won't link it unless asked as it's a DM article [thblush]

But included in the plans apparently is ten days of national mourning - and radio stations have a list on standby of "sad, respectful" songs to play during this time?

I quite like the Queen but if I put the radio on I expect pop music not sad depressing stuff Confused

These days the British Royal Family is actually looking quite good compared to various other wealthy families in the news, ahem. Your Royal Family stands for something more than just old (or new) money swanning around like vacuous celebrities. You have every right to take pride.

Having a monarch in the 21st century is ludicrous enough without that monarch being a meddling weirdo who wanted to be a tampon

Grin Grin Grin

FWIW I'm no monarchist - and I wouldn't even cross the road to see Charles crowned - but I still respect the Queen for all the effort she's put in for so long and will be sad to see her go

You can admire the person without necessarily supporting the institution they belong to

If you had to choose between a tampon or Trump which would you choose?

I think I’d have the tampax

"The monarchy perpetuates the class system and undermines the proper recognition of merit.
There is not much wrong with Britain that isn’t the fault, one way or another, of the class system. At the apex of the system is our hereditary royal family.

The Royal Family buttress their position with unearned symbols of achievement. They accept posts as Chancellors of universities, debasing the currency of academic merit. They appoint themselves to top military ranks and medals that they have not earned, belittling the work of true military professionals and the memory of those whomade genuine sacrifices. They allow themselves to be nominated as patrons of charities, degrading the efforts of those who make genuine contributions. The monarchy undermines our reputation abroad and is bad for business (even tourism).

The antics of our royal family certainly evoke an amused interest among foreigners. The Royal Family doesn't convey the brand that our high-tech exporters want to project. If we want young people from around the world to come to our universities, or international investors to put their money into our businesses, we need to offer more than a quaint history. It is sometimes argued that royalty is good for tourism: but France has been a republic for over 130 years and attracts three times as many foreign tourists as Britain. The Palace of Versailles, which is the biggest tourist attraction in Europe, has more visitors than Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace combined, in part because it is fully open to the public, all year round. The British nation’s royal art collectionsand memorabilia, currently hidden from us by the monarchy, could behoused in galleries that would be a huge boost to tourism, both from within the UK and from abroad.

The monarchy makes it impossible to separate Church and State
One reason why we still have an established church in England, which discriminates in favour of one religion above all others, is the difficulty of disconnecting the two while the Queen is Head of both Church and State. This is a piece of religious discrimination which is a dangerous anachronism in a multi-cultural, mainly secular society."

Why would we have someone like Trump, why not model a presidency on Irelands? Confused

brizzledrizzle · 01/07/2018 23:55

Let the people decide (like Brexit).

Oh yes, that's going really well isn't it? Confused

LankinMcElf · 02/07/2018 00:12

My goodness!!
Queen Elizabeth 2nd has been our longest reigning monarch, 65 bloody years!!
When she finally goes I expect (and demand!) lots of pomp, ceremony and respect!
Where is your national pride?!
This country is going to the dogs (Brexit coff coff) our Queen is a bloody diamond (literately) and I for one can cope with 10 days of mourning. We will will never be the same once that fine old lady goes!

DiabolicalMess · 02/07/2018 00:22

Ffs. This article gets rolled out every time the queen gets a sniffle! She must have a good laugh. You'd have to laugh lest it would drive you mad!

Kokeshi123 · 02/07/2018 00:24

She'll live to over 100, I have absolutely no doubt. She looked very robust indeed at Meghan's wedding!

Walkingdeadfangirl · 02/07/2018 00:26

She has been our Queen and head of state for most of her life and all of mine. The least we can do is mourn her for a few weeks. The whole world will be grieving for her, is the right and respectable thing to do.

Do people care so little these days?

SneakyGremlins · 02/07/2018 00:27

Where is your national pride?!

Er, why would I have National Pride?

I didn't choose to be born here. It's just a country. I'm not "proud" of being born here, just so happened that two British people had sex and produced me Hmm

LankinMcElf · 02/07/2018 00:41

SneakyGremlins well I’m bloody proud! QE2 is the great, great granddaughter of one of the finest monarchs ever! Are you in any way aware of what Q.V. achieved during her reign?
We used to be a powerful empire, it’s all going tits up and our wonderful queen is one the last vestiges of pride we have left.

Abra1de · 02/07/2018 00:50

I think people will be surprised how very unsettled they will feel when she has gone.

Most of us have had no other head of state.

Diana will seem a far more minor loss despite being a more tragic one.

Whether or not you’re a monarchist doesn’t come into it. It will be an enormous change.

EdWinchester · 02/07/2018 00:53

Where is your national pride?!

This is rather silly in the context of the queen or her family.

Unelected, ridiculously privileged. Can’t see anything to be proud of. Whole concept is daft.

LankinMcElf · 02/07/2018 00:58

Who shed a tear at the last royal wedding? Know I did. Pomp & ceremony! We do it better than anyone.
If you are too prejudiced to see the value of a well loved and respected head of state there is little left to say

SneakyGremlins · 02/07/2018 01:00

I didn't watch the Royal Wedding because it's just another couple getting married Confused

You do know our empire was based on slavery?

OP posts:
ReanimatedSGB · 02/07/2018 01:07

It will be interesting when she finally pops her clogs. The old bat's into her 90s, so even with the best of healthcare and the never having missed a meal... and even with the lizard overlord genes, she can't go on forever.

I used to think that, while it's stupid to allow one family to 'rule' over everyone else purely by accident of birth, it was better for the UK to have a monarch rather than a president. That was until that grinning shit Blair took us into war with Iraq. She could have stopped it, but she didn't.

Maybe when she goes, there will be a discussion about whether or not we want to continue with a monarchy at all. Because if enough people reject the idea of a monarchy, then the monarch can fuck off.

(Three or four years ago, I really was inclined to believe that Liz 2 going might mean the end of royalty in the UK. With the current worldwide resurgence of fascism and populism, I'm a bit less confident about that.)

rosesgarden · 02/07/2018 01:15

Queen Elizabeth 2nd has been our longest reigning monarch, 65 bloody years!!

Bollocks, you can demand all you like, you won't get any respect from me. You talk about 65 years as if it's 65 years of hardship. She's massively rewarded for those 65 years of privilege. They cost us a fortune. Why the hell would an extremely orivileged unelected family be deserving of any national pride. They take far more than they damn well give. I'll save my "national pride" for the givers of this country thank you.

LankinMcElf · 02/07/2018 01:16

THE Empire was absolutely not based on slavery! Slavery existed until the 12th c until the Norman Conquest. I really don’t have the strength to stay up late and argue with you. Surely the whole point of your post is that you’ve got some sort of chip on your shoulder and resent the fact that when our wonderful queen dies you can’t listen to shite on the radio for 10 days while the country mourns the end of an era and an amazing woman.

EdWinchester · 02/07/2018 01:17

I don’t think she could have stopped the Iraq war? She doesn’t have any power, as far as I’m aware.

I would love to see the monarchy scaled right down once she goes, or abolished but I can’t see that happening.

CoolCarrie · 02/07/2018 01:19

How on earth could the queen have stopped lying Blair and the war on Iraq?

CoolCarrie · 02/07/2018 01:22

I, for one would rather have a Queen or King than shits like trumpet, Blair, Cameron, Corbyn, May etc, etc as head of state in the 🇬🇧!

LankinMcElf · 02/07/2018 01:26

The choice is up to parliament. People who vote and elect need to look and think a little harder. Reading The Daily Mail is not always the wisest route 🤨

rosesgarden · 02/07/2018 01:28

Why would Charles not be shit as king?, the difference being you won't be able to vote him out. Besides that you can't compare that way, the monarch doesn't have any actual power.

rosesgarden · 02/07/2018 01:33

Also the monarch doesn't even have to try hard, it's bloody ludicrous to get that position as a birthright. At least presidents have to strive to get to their position, it wasn't handed them on a gold p,ate.
