MUST WEAR BLACK

AIBU?

Hen Party tonight... not even a close friend, one of my friends sisters.

We absolutely must wear all black. Completely black. Not black with a pattern or embellishments or a bloody red stripe. Completely black.

She will "obviously" be wearing white.

She has reminded everyone 7 times this week that we MUST ONLY WEAR BLACK.

AIBU to not go. I don't have any plain black dresses, I could wear jeans and a black top but then I'll look like a flumpy flumperson and I actually think it's completely ridiculous.

Even my gorgeous heels that are black with silver stars on them are not permissible.

AIBU?!?!?!?

OP posts:

I'd love this too, I have so many black clothes it's not even funny. I had to go to a 'wear pink' hen night once - I'm a flaming redhead, and pink is not something I do, but I sucked it up and looked like a stick of rock 'cos I rather liked the hen. If you're anywhere near Brighton, OP, feel free to come browse my extensive wardrobe of black :) Always ready for a funeral, me!

TornFromTheInside · 30/06/2018 15:47

It's all a bit OTT the way stag and hen do's are going. Seems like a whole steaming pile of excess and expense, when good friends and celebration is a simple and pure thing.

If people want to do it, fine, but I'll always question the motivation behind it all.

TheFirstMrsOsmond · 30/06/2018 15:56

I don't understand why she wants you to wear all black?

elQuintoConyo · 30/06/2018 15:56

...cpuld you wear the as-black-as-you-can clothes and write 'i'm with bridezilla' across your tits in glow in the dark pen? Grin

Ginger1982 · 30/06/2018 16:00

My hen was 'purple and pearls' and of course I wore white. But this was known about months in advance so that folk could get something appropriate. How long have you known about the dress code? Don't turn up in a different colour than what you've been asked to wear, just don't go.

Glitteryfrog · 30/06/2018 16:00

Sounds perfect to me... but I still dress like a teen goth.
If you don't want to go make an excuse and stag at home.

bathildab · 30/06/2018 16:03

Is "the hen wears white" a thing now?
When I had a hen everyone wore what they felt like... and all the others I attended.
I would wear be sparkly heels and a short black dress op. Sounds fab.

Larasshadow · 30/06/2018 16:05

If you don't want to go then don't go.

We dressed in black and bride wore white for a hen party and as far as I know there was no complaints about not wanting to wear black.

What's wrong with black jeans or leggings and a black top? You could pick a cheap dress up in a charity shop or eBay.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 30/06/2018 16:07

...and of course I wore white. Confused. There's no of course about it. This Is Not a Thing!

OurMiracle1106 · 30/06/2018 16:07

Bride saying please don’t wear white/pink/blue etc for a hen party is fine

OurMiracle1106 · 30/06/2018 16:07

Telling you to wear black and exactly what isn’t

pompomcat · 30/06/2018 16:08

YES @Maelstrop 😂
Don't go OP, tell her to do one & enjoy your eve wearing and doing what you want to do. She sounds monstrous.

TornFromTheInside · 30/06/2018 16:08

I think it's one thing to have a 'bit of fun' and all decide to try and wear black. It's quite another when it becomes a formal rule and there's a tonne of instructions on dress code etc. Then it's becoming far less 'fun' and much more prescribed. I think that's the chief objection - that it's losing the meaning of friendship and celebration.

flumpybear · 30/06/2018 16:13

I'd buy the Charity shop dress and wear the sparkly heels

ApolloandDaphne · 30/06/2018 16:15

In this hot weather all black will look ridiculous. Wear what you want as close to the code as possible. If she doesn't like it and you get sent home then it is a win for you!

Chandlierheights · 30/06/2018 16:20

OP just wear a patterned black, it’s absolutely ridiculous. If she says anything just laugh like she’s joking, but I bet she won’t.

TorviBrightspear · 30/06/2018 16:29

How is this is difficult? Surely you have a pair of black trousers/skirt, a black top and some black shoes?

The only black I have is stuff I wear for work in winter. And even then I don't wear solid black, I mix with colour.

I'd stay home.

Coyoacan · 30/06/2018 16:34

I went to a hen's night where just because of the fashion at the time everyone turned up in black, it looked like a wake.

Loonoon · 30/06/2018 16:37

Why do pe’ople not understand that some people don’t wear black or indeed trousers. I haven’t owned a pair of trousers for over 30 years. I am short and rounded and they make me look like a traffic warden. I wear jeans and the occasional pair of jeggings,, none of which are black.

I do have a couple of black tops and a very nice sequinned black skirt but as they are all heavily embellished they wouldn’t meet the hen’s stringent requirements. I also have a couple of pairs of yoga pants but they have mesh inserts and Nike ticks etc. So presumably they wouldn’t do either.

Fabricwitch · 30/06/2018 16:39

If it was me, I'd see if I could get something more suitable in the charity shop or the big shop beginning with P for cheap. I got a black cotton bodycon dress in that shop for €3 last week, you might want something less tight in this weather but you'll find something in there.
If you can't find anything cheap in the shops close to you, I'd go with the black and purple dress. Jeans will be too warm IMO. If anyone says anything just tell them you had your plain black outfit all sorted but it wasn't appropriate in this weather so you had to make do!
And enjoy your night!!

TorviBrightspear · 30/06/2018 16:39

Hen dos are getting ridiculous these days.

lightninglass · 30/06/2018 16:40

i would get a stunning over the top black dress and completely upstage this diva. x

fieldmuse · 30/06/2018 16:50

Wear grey like this

MUST WEAR BLACK
MrMeSeeks · 30/06/2018 16:52

Wear wtf you want and if she says anything tell her you want your money back.

Fabricwitch · 30/06/2018 16:56

I do think it's a bit ridiculous though! My friend made me wear a bride to be sash and I dumped it fairly early on because I was getting too much attention. And I wouldn't pay £120 to go to a hen unless she was a very good friend!
