...to think it's rude of teachers at end of term declaring that they've earned their holiday/deserve a large glass of wine etc.....?

Does it not imply that they think everyone's kids are little horrors and that it's such a hard job and we're not worthy?
Maybe all the kids are little horrors, maybe it is a hard job but they're getting paid for it. It was their choice! My job's hard too but I won't bang on about It.
I think it's quite insulting to the parents of the children. No? [hmmm]

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 01/07/2018 18:15

Everyone's tired at the end of the day/week/project/term. Nobody believes that teachers have it harder than anyone else. But they certainly don't have it easier, despite the lovely holidays.

LaCheshireChat · 01/07/2018 18:17

Every single teacher, past or present (myself included,) is rolling their eyes while politely responding to your question, dear OP....
Deserve. Every. Drop.

Regingaphalange · 01/07/2018 18:19

I have three children with additional needs. I think their teachers are super stars.
I'm also the parent who buys them wine at end of term WineGrin

Catchuptv · 01/07/2018 18:20

I've started to say I deserve my holiday nowadays - got sick of people saying - is that you off again!

perfectstorm · 01/07/2018 18:20

30 kids, day in, day out? Bloody hell, I'd be an alcoholic. Two are hard enough!

And I don't know why people think teachers have such long holidays, either. All those I know work quite hard in various holidays planning and marking. And they work crazy hours in term, too. They have to track progress of every single child, every single day.

Half of all primary teachers leave the profession in the first few years. That's not a normal rate of attrition. I couldn't do it.

I should add that not only am I not a teacher - I home educate as school isn't suitable for my child. I'm not anyone with a brief for them. I just have eyes and ears and can see how hard the role is.

SuspiciouslyMinded · 01/07/2018 18:21

You have a very weird definition of rude.

What you mention is not rude. Moreover, the teachers are absolutely right.

SuspiciouslyMinded · 01/07/2018 18:23

In your opinion, OP, should teachers be going on about how they are going to miss your precious little angel children during the holidays? Perhaps even with tears in their eyes? Would that make them polite?

Saj1988 · 01/07/2018 18:23

If you aren’t a teacher its hard to understand what they mean. Teachers love their work but they are giving all day and when the children go home they carry on giving by attending meetings, marking work, assessing and planning. Weekends are not time off for teachers either. This is not to say that other jobs are not equally demanding but by saying they’re looking forward to their glass of wine teachers are only saying they’ve worked hard and deserve a break it is not a reflection on the children.

Sparkerparker · 01/07/2018 18:24

Well I think they really do deserve it. It’s one of the most important jobs in the world.
However, the ones that publicly say this are probably the ones who don’t deserve it. What happened to modesty?

Sallybates · 01/07/2018 18:24

They thoroughly deserve the wine and the break. Don’t think for one moment they have six weeks holidays though- emptying classrooms, displays. Preparing plans, books and curriculum for September when they will be there with large smile and enthusiasm for the children!

ktp100 · 01/07/2018 18:29

Oh my days, precious much?!

Teaching is hard as a bitch and EVERYONE counts down to their holidays/break.

Get over yourself.

Barbie222 · 01/07/2018 18:30

I think the same when I see SAHMs posting pictures of a glass of wine on a Friday.

BoneyBackJefferson · 01/07/2018 18:33

OhTheRoses

I think it's the lack of empathy around the fact that many many other get 20-25 days pa plus the bank hols and it makes childcare v hard.

Yes cos teachers have no problems with childcare themselves ffs.

as for the 20-25 day + BH there is an answer but you would have to take your holidays at a set time and un-paid, And cope with the childcare issues that the job throws at you.

Mikheala · 01/07/2018 18:34

It is mentally exhausting day in day out teaching children, whether they be horrors or delights. My mum is a teaching assistant and I see her mentally knackered after a working week let alone a whole term.
So yes they are well within their right to say that they deserve it.

C2205 · 01/07/2018 18:38

Is it unreasonable of us to do the same when the kids go back to school at the end of summer?? Does that imply that we think our kids are little horrors
Of course not!!!
I hope all teachers have lovely summer holidays - I now my schools teachers deserve it!

MummyMuppet2x2 · 01/07/2018 18:41

Definitely not rude for them to say they're looking forward to their hols. Why rude? I just don't understand what's rude about saying that? In fact I think it shows how hard they work on ensuring our kids are progressing at school. That'd be my take on it anyway.

Barbie222 I think that's pretty unfair really. And no, I'm not a SAHM.

WowLookAtYou · 01/07/2018 18:43

It really bugs me that so many people (not on this thread though, thankfully) appear to think that they have the right to judge teachers and their working hours just because they come into daily contact with their pfbs. I am not accountable to Average Joe in the street, just because his child happens to be in my class.
So, I'll do the job I do, to the best of my ability, according to the terms and conditions of that job (which happens to include some unpaid leave that others are envious of), and the OP has NO RIGHT to judge me for what she perceives my feelings about it might be.

GiantPenisOfDoom · 01/07/2018 18:46

It is a hard job, why does that mean the kids are horrors? Being a doctor is a hard job, it doesn't mean the patients are assholes.

GiantPenisOfDoom · 01/07/2018 18:48

I think the same when I see SAHMs posting pictures of a glass of wine on a Friday.

You mean your friends?

WowLookAtYou · 01/07/2018 18:50

it doesn't mean the patients are assholes.

But I bet a lot of them are! Grin

Jody31 · 01/07/2018 18:57

I work in a special needs school, I’m yet to convince the school nurse to administer wine introvenuoisly. And in those 6 weeks holidays, I have to look after my own horrors!! The cheek of it! Grin

Narkle · 01/07/2018 18:59

This year alone I have dealt with
-being sworn at weekly
-being racially abused several times
-being shouted down the phone at by parents
-being told I am not doing my job by senior management despite showing them the evidence that I have done everything by the book, with no apology after said evidence was presented
-being threatened about my own health twice
-being disclosed to about suicidal thoughts, impending homelessness and physical abuse
-being completely ignored/ blanked several times per week

I have seen colleagues being injured, their bones broken (in one case with permanent damage), possessions stolen, false accusations being made, which could ruin someone's livelihood.

I teach Maths in a tough inner-city comp and believe me when I say school is the last thing on these kids' minds. So when I have managed yet again to drag another lot - even if a small percentage - through a pointless course (to them) with a reasonable grade, then yes, I have bloody well earned my holidays and am entitled to say so.

See how long people last in my job.

tash7779 · 01/07/2018 19:01

You are being very unreasonable. Teachers do not get paid half as much as they deserve for teaching 30 children per day with very little resources and ever changing curriculum that they have to get their heads round every year. Not to mention being observed and monitored constantly. So they certainly should have their glass of wine and talk about it.

Howisthislegal · 01/07/2018 19:04

Teachers definitely deserve their holiday - as do most working people!

It does annoy me a little bit that some teachers do often think their job is 1000x harder than anyone else’s though.

I’ve worked in the CAB office in a deprived area, had a computer thrown at me while pregnant, followed home, spat at, threatened, my phone stolen, I took everybody’s problems day in and day out.

One lady told me when she commits suicide it’s on our shoulders, she did not long later.

Everyone’s fighting their own shit and I don’t dismiss teachers have a hard time of it, of course they do. But so do a lot of professions. Just like I don’t know the ins and outs of the struggles a teacher may face, they don’t know others.

Oh how I wish I had 13 weeks holiday during that job though Grin

Shockers · 01/07/2018 19:06

I thought you might work with me then Narkle, but I’m in a primary. One of my colleagues has had a life changing injury recently. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit I’ve lost my nerve slightly.
