To be shocked by what happened?

Slight incident on my way home from work which left me feeling shocked and actually a bit shaken (probably safe I know and I am not usually easily shaken).

Part of my route home involved driving down a section of a street which joins a main road at the bottom. There is always a line of parked cars on the left hand side as you go down and therefore only room for one car to go up/down.

As I approached the start of the line of card, I checked no one was coming up/waiting/about to turn in off the main road. There is a clear view in both directions and there were no cars so I set off.

When I got about three quarters of the way down, a car turned in off the main road, quite quickly, and had to stop to wait for me to finish coming down (no where for me to pull in). He didn't have to stop suddenly as there is enough room at the bottom to have time.

I reached the bottom of the line and put my hand up to him to say thank you for stopping. We both had Windows down due to heat and as he moved off he shouted, really aggressively 'thanks you fucking stuck up slag'ShockAngry

I had already started moving and was frankly so astounded that I did not respond and just carried on. There were no other cars and no other passengers in his car so it was definitely directed at me.

I know there are dicks everywhere and i could understand him being annoyed if I had barged through (though that doesn't excuse his bike behaviour imo) but I did nothing at all wrong. I was simply driving down a street.

It's been a long, hard day at work but aibu to be shocked and a bit shaken by this?

He wouldn't do it to a man.

I was called a fat bastard by a man, in a similar situation. It was horrible at the time, but I've come to realise that there are some bloody awful people on this planet and am just grateful they're not in my life. I was also car chased by another bloke driver, who couldn't handle the fact that he was in the wrong lane to take the turn off I was taking and got left behind at the lights. He went crazy and pursued me, then overtook me, slamming on his breaks, screaming and shouting at me. I eventually managed to lose him. What an overreaction. When I hear about road rage, I often wonder if his female passenger is still acquainted with him?

Motherof · 27/06/2018 23:43

My sister had a similar problem with a man,,she was just near the end of a road same as you,and an elderly shall we say gent, started coming down the road ,my sister had nowhere to go,he did could have pulled into a space behind him, went bumper to bumper with my sis and indicated with his hand for her to back all the way down the street, this went on for a while sis refused to move and sat with folded arms, she could see him ranting at her but stood her ground,he eventually reversed back int the space behind him and my sis drove forward,he was still going mad,she thanked him of course .😊

Blacksax
You are a legend.
I would have paid money to see that.

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/06/2018 23:49

Motherof, that happened to a friend of mine, she was in her own street and if she'd reversed she would have had to reverse out onto a main road.
She wasn't in a hurry so just switched off her engine and got her book out her bag and just sat reading it. They took the hint and reversed.

Genevieva · 27/06/2018 23:51

Don't let yourself be rattled. I had a similar problem this week. Narrow road so I needed to reverse to let a car pass. It took 2 goes because the road is also bendy and steep. Both windows down. Instead of thanking me he shouted 'you fucking wanker!' My daughter asked me why he called me a Giant Jenga. Small mercies.

crazycatgal · 28/06/2018 00:15

I've just passed my test and I'm worried about encountering all of these dickhead drivers once I'm on the road. I agree though, it's mostly men who get aggressive when driving.

Dickybow321 · 28/06/2018 00:19

I'm wondering why he said 'stuck up slag'. Do you drive a nice car by any chance?

Dickybow321 · 28/06/2018 00:22

He's just a fucking wanker and if anybody was in his passenger seat they would have been mortified and thinking what a dick he was.

StrangeLookingParasite · 28/06/2018 00:32

really OP? shaken? bit of an over reaction, he shouted at you from his car while you were in your car?

I can only guess you've never been threatened by one of these unhinged types. I had one spit on my windscreen and try to get me out of the car once. It is really not pleasant.

Timeisslippingaway · 28/06/2018 00:33

I had this a few days ago, although the man was in the wrong.
Me: sitting at a junction at the end of the street I live in waiting to turn into the main road. This junction is very difficult to see round because people park on either side right up to the corner and it is on a hill.
Him: crawling along the main road with his hazards on, not signalling, didn't flash me to go (which a lot of people to at the junction as it is very narrow to turn into when there is another car there, so I was watching carefully to see of he would)
Me: keep waiting and watching him to see what the fuck he is actually going to do.
Him:starts screaming and shouting at me to go.

Don't think he expected me to stop put my window down and shout back at him. I probably should have just drove away but I'm affraid my temper gets the better of me. Actually what I wanted to do was drive back into my street to where he was going, drag him put his fucking van and knock 7 shades of shit out of him but shouting back was probably bad enough😂

LemonysSnicket · 28/06/2018 01:39

It's shit. And sadly the first thing I thought, before rethinking, was 'it's normal ... she's being dramatic'

And you're not. I've just been socialised to expect such abuse.

Bramble71 · 28/06/2018 02:04

It would've upset me, too, OP. You know he was an arse, but it still stings. Don't give him another thought. He's not worth the wrinkles!

diodati · 28/06/2018 02:12

Our neighbour's like this. He's screamed "fuck off" to both me and my 80 year old mother over our leaves being in his garden or his in ours or some random thing... he's nuttier than a fruitcake and scares the sh*t out of the DC. Have someWine

Wineandrosesagain · 28/06/2018 06:40

Driving DD to school, narrow road with cars parked down one side and a blind bend at the end. Road was clear so I drove down it, cue some idiot in a small white van careering around the bend and instead of stopping at the top to let me pass, decides it’s his right of way so I should reverse all the way back down the road. I continued to move forward with him tooting his horn, gesticulating and shouting. He slammed on his brakes, jumped out of the car screaming at me (luckily radio was on so DD didn’t hear the language). I waved at him as I drove by and could see him jumping up and down in the street, completely enraged. DD thought he looked very funny and we both had a good laugh. Other occasions when I’ve been confronted by screaming men in cars haven’t been so funny, but I’m glad DD wasn’t with me on those occasions.

abbsisspartacus · 28/06/2018 06:44

Funny one yesterday I was turning my car around in the road and this guy obviously couldn't wait for me to complete my turn squeezed round the front just missing my car and my neighbours parked car he was driving the collision repair specialists courtesy car I mean no wonder if he regularly drives like that

Crwban · 28/06/2018 06:57

These stories are frighteningly common, so much so that I'm going to invest in a web-cam and DEFINITELY for DD's (when they start driving).

Are there any websites "Aggressive Arse-hole Drivers.com"? I reckon it should exist to shame these idiots.

Crwban · 28/06/2018 06:57

Web-cam?! Hmm
Dash-cam!

AnguaUberwaldIronfoundersson · 28/06/2018 07:10

I had one... late one night and travelling in the deep snow I was halfway down a hill when a car started to come up. No room to pass because of the snow drifts either side but plenty of room for him to have stopped at the bottom to let me pass. I just turned my engine off and sat there until he realised what an arse he was. He tried to plough through the drifts in his Corsa but didn’t get very far. If he’dwaited 20 seconds he could have saved himself a lot of time and frustration!

Shampooeeee · 28/06/2018 07:20

It’s horrible isn’t it. I was walking with toddler ds through an almost pedestrian area the other day when a woman pulled up behind us in a car and started beeping and screaming at me. It’s an area made to look like a piazza- raised from the road, paved, pavement cafes, etc, but there is access to a small residential street. I noticed the car straight away so she didn’t have to wait long.
It made me feel shit, even though I KNOW she WBU (and a total bitch). I’m just glad I’m not her. It’s not just men who can behave like this, some women are unreasonable twats too.

headinhands · 28/06/2018 10:18

I deliberately didn't mention wether the driver was male or female in my previous account of driving cuntage. It was a woman.

runningkeenster · 28/06/2018 10:23

Do you think he was on his mobile phone? Not that it excuses him calling anyone a stuck up slag, I feel sorry for the woman on the other end if that was the case.

runningkeenster · 28/06/2018 10:24

She wasn't in a hurry so just switched off her engine and got her book out her bag and just sat reading it. They took the hint and reversed

I did this a few weeks ago, I wonder if I am your friend :)

Timefortea99 · 28/06/2018 10:33

A guy in one of those half van half car (big) vehicles was turning into my road. I was already half way across and he blatantly put his foot down so that I had to run to avoid being run over. He lent out of the window and said “for fucks sake” so it looked like my fault, but as he said it he had this little evil grin on his face. He was deliberately agressive and wanted to show his power. What was worse there was a suited and booted bloke who witnessed it and he also smirked at me. He knew that the idiot in the macho vehicle had done it deliberately and he was probably thinking, good on you fella. Some men, quite a lot of them, do hate women. Most hide it but some dickheads don’t have a problem with showing it.

WaxOnFeckOff · 28/06/2018 12:56

running there must be more than one of you as it was considerably longer ago than that. It stuck in my mind though as I could just imagine her sitting there very prim and proper!

Mmmmmmmchips · 28/06/2018 17:40
