Eliminated, exit - World Cup
Absolutely thrilled.
That's it! Grin

It’s a one sided rivalry, the Germans dont really have the rivalry from their side.

Amanduh · 28/06/2018 09:26

It’s funny.
Southgate actually saying that germany can teach us a lot, not to take anything for granted, not to get ahead of ourselves and to concentrate on us.
I like the man more every day. Level headed.

The80sweregreat · 28/06/2018 09:35

I like GS too - his messed up in the past ( missing penalties) and also been one of the good guys. He knows what it’s like for the players and probably has a bit of sympathy for the teams that are not doing well!
Let’s hope he can transfer the levelheaded approach to his team.

Hoppinggreen · 28/06/2018 09:39

Football is a game and any ribbing over wins/losses is absolutely fair and in most cases good natured and funny
War is a completely different thing and not even remotely suitable material for banter, it’s just plain nasty

Justanotherlurker · 28/06/2018 09:41

Even Alexa is in on the game if you ask her if its coming home!

MrsSteptoe · 28/06/2018 09:58

Gareth Southgate always looks like my idea of Charles Smithson in The French Lieutenant's Woman. He's got an oddly nineteenth-century face. Attractive man, IMO.

CherryNib · 28/06/2018 10:15

Independent headline apparently Don't Mention the Score.
Was tempted to get offended but was too impressed by clever headline to really give it a good go.

I saw an even better one: Don't Mention The VAR!

runningkeenster · 28/06/2018 10:25

You don't have to think you will win it to have some friendly ribbing at Germany's loss

I don't think it's very friendly.

Stay classy, people.

Justanotherlurker · 28/06/2018 10:26

I don't think it's very friendly.

Offended on behalf of german football supporters.

Stay Offended people!!

ravenmum · 28/06/2018 12:40

I think whoever first thought of it was pretty clever to come up with "don't mention the score". It isn't a LOL funny joke, but it's a neat play on the Basil Fawlty scene where we laugh at Basil's idiotic inability to be polite to his German guests. So actually laughing at our own obsession with the war. The friends and family I have here in Germany appreciate that kind of humour.

When Germany won the last World cup they were humble. In fact, they're humble after every WC win. When England got to semis in 1990 they thought they were the greatest team and got arrogant

What a load of tosh. Did you see how "HUMBLE" the Germans were towards Sweden when they scored that last minute goal?

Hoppinggreen · 28/06/2018 12:46

I suppose “funny” war references are amusing to people who don’t have dc who have been labelled Nazis at school by their peers when learning about the 2world wars.
Take the piss out of Germany for no longer being in the World Cup but don’t link it to the war, it’s just not funny

Hors d'oeuvres?

VanillaSugar · 28/06/2018 12:51

Biting my nails for tonight!

ravenmum · 28/06/2018 12:59

Hoppinggreen, I've lived 26 years in Dresden, I'm not unfamiliar with the subject. I said the headline wasn't funny, but that it was clever. I guess you have not seen or did not understand the point of the Fawlyt Towers sketch, or my explanation of it.

Amanduh · 28/06/2018 13:15

I’m torn tonight. I know if we lose tonight and go through second in the group we have an easier route to play, but I like to win, and we should be able to beat the best to be the best, but also I wouldn’t be able
to watch the last 16 game if we won as I’ll be tutoring and (as if it would get that far, but) if we came second our semi would be on a Saturday at 3pm, ideal timing!
The conflict is real

Amanduh · 28/06/2018 13:16

It is funny when you watch Basil though.

Oh dear, double post fail - sorry!

Hoppinggreen · 28/06/2018 13:22

raven My post wasn’t aimed at you specifically, apologies if it seemed that way. It was a general comment - but I am familiar with the Fawlty Towers sketch and don’t really like it.
Love the user name by the way !

Hoppinggreen, I've lived 26 years in Dresden

My family spent their lives in East London, Leytonstone.

Take your virtue signalling elsewhere.

Not offended. Embarrassed. The "don't mention the VAR" headline was funny.

The Schadenfreude headlines not so funny.

The Sun and its ilk are just embarrassing when it comes to football. Yes I know Bild-Zeitung is nearly as bad, but that doesn't make it right.

DadDadDad · 28/06/2018 13:57

You do realise that in the last World Cup, England beat Germany in the runners-up final, to be placed third overall.

Or are we only talking about the Men's World Cup on this thread? Smile

I'm happy Germany is out because I bet £5 on Korea to win. First time I've ever placed a bet. Smile
