It was an idiotic move

You may as well lose 2-0 as 1-0. And if he’d got an assist or scored it would have obviously been a massive deal.

I’d have wanted him to do it!

CharlieAustinsMagicHat · 27/06/2018 19:06

As a rule football fans will want to see the underdogs win and the favourites lose.

Look at the glee when a Prem side loses in the cup or when a non league side beats a higher team.

Taking joy from Germany crashing out of the World Cup at the group stage is just the same.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 27/06/2018 19:07

I'm indulging into some good, old-fashioned schadenfreude Wink. Having pipped Sweden to the post in their last game, Germany got their just desserts in this one against S. Korea. It gives another team the chance to win; if it's not England then hopefully Sweden.

Lucyccfc · 27/06/2018 19:14

The 'racist' comments obviously come from those who have no clue about football rivalry.

England v Germany is a huge rivalry on both sides. I took great delight in seeing England beat them 5-1 in Munich and the Germans loved it when we played them at our last game at the old Wembley and beat us. We got our own back in Berlin when we were 2-0 down and came back to win 2-3 (and I was at all those games).

My German pals will take the piss out of me if and when we go out of the WC, the same as I have done with them.

I don't sing 10 German bombers - it's for the drunken, young knob heads, much like the Mexican wave.

WallisWindsor · 27/06/2018 19:15

But why are you so pleased that Germany in particular are out of the World Cup?
One of the reasons:
World Cup 2010 Germany Vs England

No, two minutes of the game left and desperate for a goal, it's quite normal for a goalie to move forward.

Perhaps normal is overdoing it, but certainly not unknown and not an idiot move at all. I love it, absolutely love it, when teams take that gamble. No guts, no glory - and it made no difference - ultimately, they went out to a 2-0 scoreline rather than a 1-0 scoreline or draw. But as JacquesHammer said, he could have scored or assisted. Neuer is a goalkeeper, but he's not without skill elsewhere, and he's taken (and scored) penalties for Bayern Munich in his time in penalty shootouts.

cariadlet · 27/06/2018 19:35

I probably shouldn't post on this thread, because I don't really have any interest in football and haven't watched any of the matches. Having said that I do like it if an underdog does well and I'm quite happy for favourites to get knocked out.

I'm not happy that it's Germany in particular. The talk about a traditional rivalry is tedious and not really true. Surely a rivalry has to be mutual like the football rivalry between Liverpool and Everton or between Man Utd and Man City.
A lot of English football fans and pretty much all of the English tabloids, seem to be obsessed with England beating Germany but I thought that this was a one sided obsession. Rivalries tend to be with neighbours and I think Germans tend to be more interested in beating Holland.

My main hope - for the sake of my DP - is for England to get knocked out asap. He's English and loves football, but what he really wants to see is a game between 2 fairly evenly matched teams where both teams play well. He gets fed up with commentators being obsessed with the prospects for England, even in halftime discussions during a match between 2 completely different countries.

Mimithemouse · 27/06/2018 19:38

Italian 90 semi final penalty shoot out is reason enough

Mimithemouse · 27/06/2018 19:39

All these teams qualified remember. They are all a decent standard. England are a young team and playing well.
My prediction is that we'll have a lot of dodgy ref decisions and go out on penalties to Argentina

between4and7 · 27/06/2018 19:39

still have fond memories of this

between4and7 · 27/06/2018 19:40

5-1

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 27/06/2018 19:43

I’m quite happy. World Cup fever will simmer right down here in Deutschland, you wouldn’t believe how quiet it is tonight!

Bairnsmum05 · 27/06/2018 19:44

whats this about “us”? I’m sure you are referring to England fans not all of the uk. England have a rivalry with Germany not the rest of us do don’t generalise.

Justanotherlurker · 27/06/2018 19:45

He gets fed up with commentators being obsessed with the prospects for England, even in halftime discussions during a match between 2 completely different countries.

Every nations commentators are just as obsessed with their national teams, this notion that its only England that hype up their own teams at half time has either never watched a game abroad or doesn't have foreign friends who are football fans.

German's took the rip at our dismal offering at the euros, England fans celebrated Germany's 7-1 win over brazil.

The rivalry is one sided as they have won more than us, Germany know it, and so do England fans, its the same with the rivalries you mentioned Liverpool Everton, Man U/City. The fiercest rivaly is between united and liverpool, Germany has more fierce rivals but the rivalry is there, its more akin to Liverpool Everton, or Man U v City (before the take over) that they kind of look down on us.

Jorah · 27/06/2018 19:47

I don't think your dp has listened to the same coverage as I have. I think the commentators have been very measured about England's prospects.

Of course England football fans want England to win! We know deep down that they won't but its lovely to dream Smile

CoolCarrie · 27/06/2018 19:48

I laughed when Germany were knocked out, because I have a soft spot for South Korea and love to see the underdogs win for a change.

CoolCarrie · 27/06/2018 19:49

I would love to see Mexico win to piss trumpet off!

cariadlet · 27/06/2018 19:56

I've not asked him what the commentators say and it could be that they're measured. He just gets fed up with them banging on about England all the time. I'm sure that he lived in a different country he'd be getting bored with that country's commentators going on about their national team.

He loves watching a decent football match (between any teams), but is a football fan rather than an England fan.

Actually I find the bordering on religious England vs Scotland rivalry tiresome.

That’s understandable. I find the one sided rivalry between England and Germany rather tiresome and a bit cringey.

Cornetto Thanks for that very interesting link.

However the stats I saw said 55% MNers were from the U.K That’s not at all the same thing as “a predominately English website”.

Did I miss a breakdown of the U.K. stats somewhere?

I do agree that as England has a considerably higher population than Scotland, NI and Wales it’s not an unreasonable assumption that many of the U.K. users are English, but I’d be interested to see the actual breakdown if there was one.

There always seems to be lots of Scots and Irish posters - maybe we’re just noisy. Grin

The80sweregreat · 27/06/2018 21:08

The press and commentaters have been very measured about England’s ‘chances’ of actually winning the whole thing.
I think they all know it won’t happen but there always a glimmer of hope!

Stripybeachbag · 27/06/2018 21:18

I agree. So boring.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 27/06/2018 21:20

YABU. One sided rivalry manufactured by the gutter press who love a war reference.

disahsterdahling · 27/06/2018 21:27

I'm sure the Germans will be disappointed to leave another country the pleasure of knocking England out on penalties.

Anyway I got annoyed when so much extra time was added on in the Germany-Sweden game and then again in the Argentina game last night. My colleague told me England would win today. I tried to give her a reality check. It won't happen.

NINE minutes? Funnily enough, when Brazil were 2 goals up tonight, the referee only added on 3 minutes.

If the form team is losing, loads of time is added on. If they're winning, it's far less. The ref did his best to give Germany a chance to stay in.

My son gets really annoyed with me and tells me it's not so. But it happens in the Premiership too.
