4 out of the previous 5 champions have been knocked out in the group stage in the following tournament, so the curse is still there.

Never nice to poke the loser which is why I’m not posting on a German forum.

Being a scotland fan your not used to even winning many matches so it must feel like you're getting picked on, most football fans of every nation understands the poking when you lose. Wink

The80sweregreat · 27/06/2018 18:06

That’s sport for you!
It is unusual though - they are usually a given to do well.

derxa · 27/06/2018 18:06

The fact that they are out does, in theory, have the potential to provide England with a better chance of winning the world cup so that will be seen as a good thing by some England fans. It doesn't work like that. Germany were poor so got beat.

WatermelonGlitter · 27/06/2018 18:06

I'm very glad that Germany are out, principally because it means there is more chance of Croatia winning. Go Croatia!

flapjackfairy · 27/06/2018 18:08

Lighthouse we are already through

Cornettoninja · 27/06/2018 18:08

Not in Scotland’s eyes letstalk which was the comparison I was making.

The average German fan isn’t giving us a second thought right now (why would they - they always beat us Grin) but the average England fan is pretty pleased.

Stats obviously reflect something very different to the emotions involved.

Emily7708 · 27/06/2018 18:13

I drew Germany in the sweepstake at work. This was the first year I thought I was in with a chance of winning!

HoneyDragon · 27/06/2018 18:13

After the behaviour I witnessed after the surprise Germany win against Sweden and the complete lack of sportsmanship demonstarated, I think there is a distinct feeling of schadenfreude amongst quite a few nations this afternoon.

I hope FIFA wrap them on the knuckles.

letstalk2000 · 27/06/2018 18:13

I also think the one difference with this England side than others since 1996 is that players seem to be enjoying themselves!

This being a reason why this team with just one world class player with Harry Kane is likely to do better than previously more gifted teams.
However, if England can finally get the progression of younger players in to regular first team football , they could be a ' surplus' of extremely gifted young players coming through.

letstalk2000 · 27/06/2018 18:14

there could be...

And relishing is a bit strong but no not really. The point of a tournament is to win it. Every knock out is a step closer for every other team.

justanotherlurker no idea how I’ve given the impression I’m Scottish?? Far from it - far too weak a constitution for that climate Wink

ravenmum · 27/06/2018 18:15

I missed the Sweden one, what did they do?

LighthouseSouth · 27/06/2018 18:17

@stevie69

oh, I sort of knew that but got confused! thanks.

ipswichwitch · 27/06/2018 18:18

I’m very happy about it since I got Sweden in the work sweepstake!

HoneyDragon · 27/06/2018 18:18

raven at full time two of the German officials deliberately went up to to the Swedish bench to taunt them. A linesman tried to stop them and they still skirted past him and continued. Totally unsporting and it turned into a brawl when Swedish officials and a few players that saw reacted. Whilst the other players were shaking hands on pitch and behaving cordially.

Polymamas · 27/06/2018 18:21

What's racist about being happy the current world champions have been kicked out of a tournament? Anyone with half a brain can see that it improves our chance of winning! How bizarre that's where your head goes Confused

Cornettoninja · 27/06/2018 18:21

Absolutely letstalk the difference in watching this team to the years of Beckham and Rooney is amazing. You can see them enjoying themselves. I never understood why our line up stagnated for so long - it wasn’t like they won anything!

I remember a game - euros against Croatia I think - where Crouch was the only one who looked like he had any interest whatsoever in the game. Massively lost my interest for international football at that point.

Fairenuff · 27/06/2018 18:22

'Playing as an extra out field player'

Yes but why? Surely it makes sense to keep the goal keeper in or at least very near the goal?

Grimtimes · 27/06/2018 18:24

I think this competition is the most interesting in years...the traditionally best teams playing poorly and some fantastic play by underdogs.
Loving it all so far...

WallisWindsor · 27/06/2018 18:24

Can we please please leave racism out of this conversation please?. This is football, the very game that brings different nations and races together.
Dear me!

I'm so happy right now! My throat still hurts from screaming at the tv!Grin

Bombardier25966 · 27/06/2018 18:27

No, two minutes of the game left and desperate for a goal, it's quite normal for a goalie to move forward.

Pixiegirl76 · 27/06/2018 18:27

Yes and Argentina are hardly role models are they, some people have short memories

MrsSteptoe · 27/06/2018 18:28

@Fairenuff In the dying minutes of a game, a goalkeeper might gamble on running forward and attempting to join an attack if scoring is the only way to stay in a competition (in other words, if Germany hadn't scored, they'd have been out anyway - do or die). Neuer unfortunately lost the gamble. But they'd have been out on 1-0 anyway. Had Germany scored instead and taken it to 1-1, I think they'd still have needed to score again in the remaining minute, so it was desperate measures either way.
