To be devastated at losing an envelope with £500 cash in it?

northernlights0710 · 24/06/2018 13:37

Short version: On Friday a friend gave me £500 they owed me in cash, in an envelope. Within the space of 24 hours I have no idea where it is.

My memory is terrible and I often wonder if I've got early onset dementia (I'm in my 50s).

I was nervous getting this money in cash as I don't like having large sums on my person. I would have preferred it put straight into my bank account. But the person who gave me the money didn't want to do that.

I had a feeling that I was going to lose the money. Perhaps I manifested this thought into reality.

I'm gutted and feel sick.

What's the largest sum you've ever lost and how long did it take you to get over it?

I'm sure you're not interested but if you are, here are further details:

When my friend gave me the money (in my home) I was rushing to get out of the house and so I think I left it at home (I live alone) then went to the dentist and then to work.

I remember counting it so that must be when I came home from work. But I just cannot remember where I put it! I had a builder I didn't know coming the next day so started to put credit cards away etc. I still don't know what I did with the cash.

Next morning I looked for the cash in the place I thought I'd left it and it wasn't there. This was before the builder got here, so he's not responsible.

I have looked in all the places it might be, and even went through the rubbish and recycling but it is nowhere. I rang the dentist and the pharmacy but they said nothing had been handed in.

Finally, lesson learnt. I will never again accept cash payments in a large sum. I will insist on a bank deposit.

Have you had windows open? The envelope could have blown down the back of furniture? I always look behind my sideboard when I’ve lost something as things tend to slip down the back. Have you looked down the sofa?

Iwillorderthefood · 24/06/2018 18:03

Have you checked under your sofas, anywhere it might have been pushed into just due to you moving around the flat?

wolfywynnie · 24/06/2018 18:08

I have an awful tendancy to forget to take my cash from an ATM. I plug in the pin etc, and when my card comes out I take it and walk off Confused

In total I've lost around £350 (although once i did get my £100 back because the machine sucked it back in).

I've learned my lesson and no longer use ATM's, ever Grin

Hope you find your cash soon OP!

Check inside vases, jugs, glasses, cups, they're my normal hiding places.

A couple of years ago I lost my wedding and engagement rings - we were staying in a holiday cottage, but I realised I wasn't wearing them early afternoon, when we'd been to the beach and the park. It didn't make sense as they didn't come off easily. I'd love to know where they are now, but sadly they won't turn up at home 😢

falang · 24/06/2018 18:11

I've just found something in my house that has been lost for 7 months. The money will turn up.

ElsieMc · 24/06/2018 18:21

I am a similar age to you op and am always losing things, generally turn up but not 100% of the time.

Car keys are a regular. Last time they were in the laundry basket as I had picked them up with the dirty washing. Have a look there.

Lost my gs2's birth certificate several years back and had to get a replacement. I found the original a couple of weeks back when I was tidying a dressing table drawer. As ever, I had put it in a "safe" place (which I then forget) and it was at the bottom of my pyjama drawer. Have you looked in the underwear/nightwear drawer?

Last Christmas I misplaced - and never found - a Superdry bag I bought for my grandson. Never seen it again and I now believe that I picked up Christmas wrapping paper to put in the bin and threw it away, already wrapped. Strangely, his great grandmother bought him exactly the same bag for Christmas!

Could it also be in a coat/jacket pocket. I have lost car keys again and later found them there.

Sorry if its annoying repeating similar suggestions but I do so hope you find this op.

Did you count the money after your friend had left?

WatcherintheRye · 24/06/2018 18:21

Not quite the same but I once had a goat that used to get into people's cars

Haha! No, not the same at all, but made me Grin Grin

Hope you find your money, op. Hard to do, I know, but try and relax before you look again, and be systematic. I often can't find something, if I'm looking for it in a panic. When I try a bit later, in a calmer frame of mind, it turns up, sometimes in a place I'd convinced myself I'd searched thoroughly!

ColourfulOrangex · 24/06/2018 18:22

Oh I hope you find it OP that's a large amount of money to lose, fingers crossed it turns up soon

ignoringthechoc · 24/06/2018 18:25

Reminds me of that Streets song where he accused all his friends of nicking a grand then months later calls TV repairman out and its in the back of the TV :) sorry, off topic but I like that album!

kingjofferyworksintescos · 24/06/2018 18:30

Sorry to hear your predicament it's annoying to loose that amount ( or indeed any amount ) of money , your not alone we all have crazy busy lives and misplace stuff
Can you take some time to sit quietly and think about all your actions and movements step by step right down to the minutest detail from the moment you received the money , retrace all your movements slowly see if something triggers off where you may have put it ..... this is what I do if I loose something and it usually works if I can do it calmly and not too far in time after the event of loosing the item
Hope it works

Magpiemagpie · 24/06/2018 18:37

I lost 2000 well actually I found it but I didn’t realise I lost it In the first place
I had a large amount of money and I had put it in a drawer in the house and left it there as we were paying for building work and needed cash

2000 has somehow slipped out and down the back of the drawer
I assumed that I had counted it wrong in the first place or that someone had stolen it
We had builders in and my son hand his friends were also in and out of the house all week
Six month later we were taking the drawer and the stand apart to take to the dump and out fell this wad of money 😂

Lost a rental deposit on a flat once when the LL did a moonlight flit. This was just pre the law on deposits being in a scheme. Tried everything to track down the fuckers but never managed it. 800 quid, just gone.

Tuttytoffee · 24/06/2018 18:48

I once lost £1500 in my house. I had it on top of the wardrobe for a while and one morning in a rush I decided to take some cash out of it. I was 100% convinced I'd put it straight back but I couldn't find it. Searched what I thought was the whole house. In the end I found it in the cupboard under the stairs in the box i stored it in. I must of put it in there on my way out so I didn't have to go back up the stairs. I don't ever recall doing this at all.

You will find it. Usually somewhere completely unexpected. If you never do find it then I would be looking at any other people who knew you had cash in the house. But I very much doubt this will be the outcome. Good luck and I hope you find it sooner than later to put your mind at rest. I can't bare to lose money.

SusieOwl4 · 24/06/2018 18:53

I have just lost a camera . I am sure that is in the house as well but I have not got a clue where . It’s quite small and I only just bought it . I sort of remember moving it somewhere before the cleaners come in . But that’s it the rest is a blank .

stayathomegardener · 24/06/2018 18:55

Get your friend to send/give you an identical envelope so you know exactly what you are looking for.

thecatsarecrazy · 24/06/2018 19:23

I lost 500 too op. My mil gave it to us to take the boys away. Fuck knows where it went. Hoped it would turn up when i moved but no. I accused dh of stealing it for a latest money making scheme but he swore he didn't. I had to save and sell anything to recoup it. Still gives me a sick feeling

MsWinters · 24/06/2018 19:30

When I lose something it's nearly always because I've put something else on top of it. Look underneath everything!

Rednailsandnaeknickers · 24/06/2018 19:34

I may be very cynical but are you absolutely sure your friend couldn't have swiped it back before leaving the house? Not wouldn't, not "oh she would never do that to me" - logically is it possible she could have grabbed the envelope? I'm just suspicious why she wanted to pay in cash and not a bank transfer as is usual these days. Have you mentioned your memory issues to her? Giving her a good idea of what it could be blamed on. Not a nice thought but one you should consider if you can't find the cash.

Samewitches · 24/06/2018 20:30

Where was the place you thought you'd left it? I've found things (not cash, important documents, letters etc) exactly where I was sure I'd left them but misplaced if you see what I mean? So with the 'to do' pile by the side of the microwave but had somehow slipped fully underneath when I'd checked behind it already several times because I expected it to fall behind but didn't think to lift the thing. Or on top of my toaster, don't use it often so put 'do today' important stuff on there, it's on a counter between the fridge and oven so in the tiny gap between them, fallen behind fridge, slid down the back of oven etc. So you might have put it where you thought you did but it's gone wandering?
DH was selling his bike once, had a buyer coming to collect the next day and hadn't looked for the log book because he 'knew where it was' despite me telling him several times to get it out in advance. Of course he can't find it and we're having rows because he wants me to help him but I'm having none of it, I'm keeper of 'The Box' and the only rule is that any log books, birth/ marriage certs etc go in there. If it's not there I'm not helping, you knew the rule. Long story short- it was in the drawer he thought but stuck to the top!

Lorddenning1 · 24/06/2018 20:34

I agree with @Rednailsandnaeknickers you said you had a bad feeling about it and that you thought you might lose it, do you think that could of been your gut/intuition telling you something was a bit off with you friend.
This happened to me and the person that took it helped me look for it and they kind of over acted the part when they helped me look for it, so much so that I thought it was strange, I trusted my gut and found it neatly rolled away in their cig packet.
Obviously OP you will never know if they have, just keep your wits about you.

Lethaldrizzle · 24/06/2018 20:38

Before you go to sleep tonight write down what you want to dream about - finding your money - hopefully this will prompt your subconscious to reveal where you left it as you sleep

ICouldBeSomebodyYouKnow · 24/06/2018 20:42

I think you've pretty much done this, but when I lose something I physically retrace my steps. Just thinking about it doesn't seem to do the trick, but when I retrace my steps somehow my mind retraces too, and - voila. I hope it works for you.

Helloisitteaurlookingfor · 24/06/2018 20:43

My DH lost his wedding ring in our old house. He takes it off when having a wash, doing dishes etc and lost it. By absolute fluke a day before we moved house he found it wedged behind the stand part of the bathroom sink.

OP, Things make their way to the strangest of places so look in every nook and cranny. Good luck!

LadyFlumpalot · 24/06/2018 20:45

Have you checked your makeup bag/wash bag? Lost my passport in March, turned up in my makeup bag. I never wear makeup but had wanted to stash it somewhere safe when in a hotel.

deptfordgirl · 24/06/2018 20:47

I keep doing things like this but thankfully not with money. I've just had a baby so am very tired and sleep deprived so am blaming it on that! The other day I bought my dh a birthday cake and hid it so he couldn't see it. His birthday was he following day and I went to get the cake and couldn't find it where I thought it was. I then looked everywhere and still couldn't find it until a couple from days later when I found it in my son's wardrobe. Have no recollection of putting it there!
