To be devastated at losing an envelope with £500 cash in it?

northernlights0710 · 24/06/2018 13:37

Short version: On Friday a friend gave me £500 they owed me in cash, in an envelope. Within the space of 24 hours I have no idea where it is.

My memory is terrible and I often wonder if I've got early onset dementia (I'm in my 50s).

I was nervous getting this money in cash as I don't like having large sums on my person. I would have preferred it put straight into my bank account. But the person who gave me the money didn't want to do that.

I had a feeling that I was going to lose the money. Perhaps I manifested this thought into reality.

I'm gutted and feel sick.

What's the largest sum you've ever lost and how long did it take you to get over it?

I'm sure you're not interested but if you are, here are further details:

When my friend gave me the money (in my home) I was rushing to get out of the house and so I think I left it at home (I live alone) then went to the dentist and then to work.

I remember counting it so that must be when I came home from work. But I just cannot remember where I put it! I had a builder I didn't know coming the next day so started to put credit cards away etc. I still don't know what I did with the cash.

Next morning I looked for the cash in the place I thought I'd left it and it wasn't there. This was before the builder got here, so he's not responsible.

I have looked in all the places it might be, and even went through the rubbish and recycling but it is nowhere. I rang the dentist and the pharmacy but they said nothing had been handed in.

Finally, lesson learnt. I will never again accept cash payments in a large sum. I will insist on a bank deposit.

i lost a pair of earrings that my husband bought me when we were first together. I gather he spent a lot on them. They were lovely. I put them away for safe keeping.
I could never find them, I moved house 18 months ago, and im still quite sad when i think about them, i dont allow myself any expensive jewelery.
the only gift he has ever taken upon himself to buy me.

ReadytoTalk · 24/06/2018 16:48

Hope you find it op. Something that's worked for me in the past is to sit very still and quietly and visualise whatever it is I'm looking for. Eventually you start to "see" clues as to its surroundings. Im the least woo person ever but it has worked for me. Maybe it's the act of meditating on where it is that clears my mind and helps me focus, who knows!

lizzie1970a · 24/06/2018 16:48

Has anyone mentioned asking the police if it's been handed in? It's a long shot but I'd hand money in that was in an envelope. Not everyone is dishonest. It's different to finding £20 in the street which could belong to anyone but £500 in an envelope is there for a reason. You've retraced your footsteps and checked the dentist etc?

happinessischocolate · 24/06/2018 16:56

Are you looking for the right thing?

I spent days looking for an white letter envelope which contained money, eventually found it in an a5 brown envelope.

happinessischocolate · 24/06/2018 16:57

Oh and as a pp said pray to st Anthony 🙏. it works every tIme 👌

Inside washing machine, oven or microwave, underneath etc, food cupboards incl packets like cereal boxes. Under car mats, tucked under the sun visor.

I thought I’d lost my purse at the bus station once, cancelled cards, etc. I eventually found it tucked inside the baby’s higchair - it was on the seat but the chair was folded up.

And yes I’d be wary that sometimes friends and family can steal, it’s awful and you start to think you're cracking up - so cruel.

Good luck Thanks

Under microwave and between top of washing machine & countertop are favourites of mine. Also down side of fridge freezer.

Really hope you find it x

HollowTalk · 24/06/2018 17:03

Try to think back, OP - was your friend with you when you counted it? Do you remember one of you saying that you should it was all there?

agedknees · 24/06/2018 17:05

Have you tried the laundry basket?

HollowTalk · 24/06/2018 17:05

Have you checked under the sofa cushions (the seats)?

Jesuisleloup · 24/06/2018 17:07

With the tea or coffee? Did you make a brew when you came in ?

Abra1de · 24/06/2018 17:17

Download a self-hypnosis app and it will relax your mind and you will remember where you left it. I found my glasses after doing this. They were in a clump of grass by a tennis court.

Words of wisdom that have stuck with me from “One Hundred Years of Solitude”: We lose things when we go out of our routine.
Logical, really, or we’d come across the lost thing in the course of our daily life.
So try to think what was unusual on the day you lost the envelope, that might have led you out of your way.

The saddest lost money I found was €50 in an inside pocket of one of late DFIL’s rarely worn jackets when I was clearing out his wardrobe. It brought me straight back to the day he lost it...Sad

At the age of twelve, £5 birthday money went on the fire as it was still in the unwanted envelope (!) and I once lost my wedding and engagement rings. I’d taken them off in the shower and left them in the soap dish. I looked EVERYWHERE for them but at that time I hadn’t read “100 Years..”

Catchuptv · 24/06/2018 17:21

Have you found it yet?

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 24/06/2018 17:22

Sorry this has happened. I've done similar, but with lesser amounts of money. Last time I had put it in a diary pocket, for some stupid reason that made sense at the time. I came across it a few days later, when I had stopped looking for it. IME, I do this stuff when I am stressed. Sometimes I have to write down where I have put something. Eg, I have left my very intrusive and nosey DM looking after the cat with DSD this week. I have felt obliged to lock away my WW card, so that she can't actually find out what I weigh. Although she knows I am a bit fat obs Grin I have had to write down where I have hidden they key to the beureax! I hope you find it, and I am a little bit confident that you will Flowers

rainbowruthie · 24/06/2018 17:27

Good luck, I'm sure you will find it

rainbowlou · 24/06/2018 17:34

Such a horrible feelig, I really hope you find it.
Please do call the police, a few weeks ago someone local to us posted on fb they had found a large amount of money in a supermarket car park and handed it in.

rainbowlou · 24/06/2018 17:34

Feeling!

Penguin34 · 24/06/2018 17:35

I moved out of a flat once and 2 years later the new tenant turned up at my parents house with my birth certificate.
It was bloody lucky as I was getting married that year and I needed it.
It had Somehow fallen behind the skirting??
The new tenant went to junior school with me so knew where my parents lived.

Pull out the furniture x

Penguin34 · 24/06/2018 17:38

Have you looked in your car?
Thought 'oh I shouldn't have that on me' and shoved it in the glove box.

Your friend should have paid you back in whatever way you wanted though

MakeItRain · 24/06/2018 17:38

I'm in my 50's and have also suffered with appalling memory (though this has massively improved since I started taking vitamin B12 - maybe worth a try?)

I have sometimes found things where I last did something on autopilot - so coffee cupboard/ fridge/ random cupboards, on top of radiators, bathrooms. Try to think about where you counted it and what you might have done next.

I've also put things in bags or boxes I'm about to use for another purpose, and also once found my keys in the lining of a coat after my pocket had a small hole that wasn't immediately obvious when you out your hand in.

Good luck! Hope you find it.

Rainydaydog · 24/06/2018 17:39

Sorry to hear you have lost the money. I am a very forgetful and easily distracted person and I can totally see myself doing this. Just reading your OP gave me the shivers.
Hope you find it soon.

Indie139 · 24/06/2018 17:47

To me it sounds like you misplaced it at home. I rarely carry large amounts of money and so luckily think largest amount I've ever lost is a tenner when I lost my purse once. Keep looking at home, hopefully it turns up!

ThatchersCold · 24/06/2018 17:51

I lost my purse recently, went as far as cancelling all my cards. I knew that I’d had it just before I’d left the house, as I’d taken money out for the cleaner. Then it eventually turned up in a drawer. What I’d done was have a last minute tidy up of things just before I’d left, and must have put it in the drawer along with the pair of scissors that was on the table. Can you think what else you did around the time that you lost it?

kingseat2016 · 24/06/2018 17:52

Many years ago a poster lost her wedding rings, she found them in a recipe book.

You remember counting the money. What room was that in? Go back there and go right through that room.
