what happened in the shop..

i was at the shops earlier and had a basket full of shopping, i went to the self checkout (before anyone suggest i use the tills in future i want to state that i suffer from anxiety and find it difficult so i use the self service.).. anyway as i had quite abit of shopping the whole amount wouldnt fit so i decided it was best to do it in two transactions. after i had finished i decided to leave a few bits behind (left in the basket) anyway as i went to walk off the man shouted "excuse me do you want this stuff!" i said "no sorry im leaving that behind" thinking it was flipping obvious if i was walking away, but whatever.

anyway he then says to me "well what about the pampers" hanging onto my clip on the pram. i said i had already paid for them, he asked for my receipt, meanwhile bare in mind everyone was staring at me! panicked i started to go through the bags looking for it but couldnt find it. he then accused me of trying to steal them! i was so humilated. i asked him to check the cctv. at this point the whole place was starting at me.

anyway as he walked off to check the cctv i found the receipt in my pocket. i went over put the receipt down infront of him and said "there is the receipt." i didnt even hang around i walked straight out but i am so humiliated. safe to say i cant go in there again! aibu to think it could have been done more discreet?

Why couldn’t you have just put it alll through at once like any normal person?

Branleuse · 22/06/2018 20:14

I would have found that quite humilating. I don't blame you for being upset

RunMummyRun68 · 22/06/2018 20:15

Why take so much stuff through self service anyway? The 2 transaction thing is a red flag at our self service

Butterflykissess · 22/06/2018 20:15

i was holding the baby as i was walking around and had the basket balance between the pran handle and shopping inside her seat. when i got there i scanned the larger items in her seat and then put her in the pram whilst i did the rest. i normally do this as cant get a trolley

You had paid; you had a receipt but just panicked a bit when asked to produce it. Of course you can go back into the shop - this was a misunderstanding. I know you don’t want to use a staffed till, but maybe you could next time? (I find self-service tills make me more anxious than staffed checkouts)

siwel123 · 22/06/2018 20:18

You can go back there you know Grin
You caught his attention as you left items so he asked if you wanted them thinking you forgot them.

He then asked if you had a receipt for the items which again he is allowed to do as many people go through self checkouts and leave things attached and on top of buggies etc pretending to have paid for them.

He maybe could have come up and asked but then he got your attention by shouting you for forgetting items.

BrownTurkey · 22/06/2018 20:18

Hey, Butterfly, I once remembered just after I walked out of Tesco that I hadn’t paid for my self service shopping...went back and paid, the worker was professional but stern. I felt a little self conscious next time, but I still shop there every week a few times, don’t give it another thought. Now for the story where I got arrested for not paying for my petrol...blasted menopausal brain fog thank gawd for HRT. I know I am honest and they are just doing their job, though yes he was rude and could have been more friendly.

spotspot · 22/06/2018 20:18

When you say it wouldn't all fit in one go....

Do you mean that once you'd scanned half your items, your shopping bag was full on the other side? If so, you can get the attention of a member of staff who will authorise it for you to remove the first bag of shopping and start a new one. Might help in future.

bakingdemon · 22/06/2018 20:20

Having worked in retail, it is a right pain when people leave stuff at the tills, so please don't. If it's stuff that's meant to be in the fridge, they often can't put it back as they don't know how long it's been outside so it costs the shop money too.

CloudCaptain · 22/06/2018 20:20

Scan and go is your friend here. You can scan your shopping straight into your bags in the trolley, then just pay at the end. No faffing with packing and unpacking. I even managed to accidentally nick a bag of pampers once, thought dh had scanned, he thought I had. Dh took them back later on and they gave us them free for our honesty.

lostinjapan · 22/06/2018 20:21

I don't think he's done anything wrong. It's understandable if he perceived your behaviour to be slightly erratic. Next time if you don't want something, hand it back to the person at the tills. And if you're buying something that you haven't put in a carrier bag, always have your receipt to hand, in case you're asked about it on the way out.

Cheby · 22/06/2018 20:25

I don’t think he did anything wrong really. Your behaviour was a bit odd, leaving things behind without saying anything and doing 2 separate transactions, and people do steal nappies a lot. He was doing his job I think.

pictish · 22/06/2018 20:26

It wasn’t the ideal shopping trip by any means but I think you’re making a drama out of a crisis here. Of course you can go back in. If you choose to bodyswerve your local shop over this and go to one a bus journey away instead, you’re being very silly. I understand your anxiety is dictating here and I sympathise...but that’s still your choice and nothing to do with the man in the shop.

Butterflykissess · 22/06/2018 20:26

i wont make the mistake of leaving shoppigg behind again thats for sure. still can never go back though

GabsAlot · 22/06/2018 20:26

just move one bag off and start the next bag doesnt have to be two transactions

cariadlet · 22/06/2018 20:26

I'm sorry that you felt that the member of staff was shouting at you (he probably only did that because you'd walked away and he was trying to get your attention) and I do sympathise with your anxiety.

But I still think you were BVU to leave some of the items you'd selected in the basket. That seems very lazy and entitled.

Members of staff on the shop floor are there to restock shelves, man the tills and help with enquiries. They are not there to put items back that customers have chosen, taken to a till, decided not to buy and then couldn't be bothered to put back themselves.

Having said that they will have seen far worse, I'm sure nobody intended to humiliate you and there's certainly no need stop shopping there.

BoomBoomsCousin · 22/06/2018 20:28

Certainly, I think your behaviour was unusual, especially the just leaving things behind. But the shop assistant's treatment of you was atrocious and I highly doubt it was in keeping with the store's policy. I would make a complaint to their HQ.

pictish · 22/06/2018 20:28

You can go back.

HildaZelda · 22/06/2018 20:28

Self scan is for people who want to pay for their FEW items quickly. If you had so many items that you needed to do two transactions because there 'wasn't enough room', then you probably shouldn't have been using the self scan in the first place.

PrivateDoor · 22/06/2018 20:30

Op are you seeking treatment for your anxiety? It sounds rather debilitating if you cannot even go through a checkout.

YABU, this guy was doing his job and it is very clear why he would have been suspicious. I have never saw anyone behave as you did at the checkout.

I think you probably raised his suspicions by the slightly odd behaviour of just leaving stuff behind in the basket.

Butterflykissess · 22/06/2018 20:35

no no help for it. dont want to either.

i would have done it online to avoid all this but i dont have a bank card atm. didnt realise you could move things off without paying. mine says please return the item to the bagging area?

OP posts:
Belindabauer · 22/06/2018 20:35

This sounds very bizzare.
Why did you leave some of your shopping ?
Why didn't you put your baby in the pushchair and sort your shopping out?
It is unreasonable to dump shopping at the checkout as a member of staff then had to put it all back.
I'm sorry you have anxiety but your actions do look suspicious.
