School leavers hoodie is wrong

Namechangedforthispost18 · 21/06/2018 12:00

We ordered a school leavers hoodie for our dd, at a cost of nearly £20.
The PTA were in charge all proceeds going to the school, we recently changed DD surname however old surnames is now a middle name.

So we asked for previous surname and new one to be on it so the kids in class would know who it was and it would have the new surname we legally have to use on too.

The front has the initials on and is correct, both surnames.

The back is completely wrong.

They've left out punctuation within her name, and it only includes her old surname.

The school are claiming it is the PTA's fault, PTA are claiming it is a data protection issue (although it was handed from 1 person to the next to another) and that they couldn't clarify names however we confirmed it via facebook and have screenshots, we are not the only one to have a child with an incorrect name on the hoodie.

The pta and school are refusing to recall the hoodies or communicate with us or update us. Yet they've updated another parent and told them the wrong name will be scraped off and the right one stuck on top (it will look shit).

AIBU to expect all hoodies to be recalled and corrected? Her friends will have the wrong name on.

Also we the leavers are wearing theirs but the children without correct named hoodies have had them taken and are left out. This is causing other kids to laugh at these pupils.
The pta member who royally f up, her child is blaming the parents for giving her mother the wrong spellings etc and is intimidating the kids.

The school arent touching the issue with a barge pole.

Do I have rights as a consumer?

For everyone making the point though - being a volunteer doesn't mean you're excused when you make a fuck up, nor indeed exempt from putting the fuck up right.

In this situation I would expect to obtain correct hoodies for the children for whom the order is incorrect.

Sorry, babies and disabled children are being torn from their parents at the border of America - they're desperately seeking a new life away from the threat of violence and you're bitching about a typo on a jumper. Piss off. Plus the PTA are volunteers. It's a whoops. That's it. No refund, no return.

And the prize for most nonsensical hyperbole goes to....

MamTDM · 21/06/2018 12:43

I'm amazed at people saying that they're only worn a couple of times. My DS has had his since May - the entire class wear them to school every day, even in blazing heat, they all took them to their school residential and wore them every day, and it's a running joke amongst the mums that we're having to wash the damn things every evening after school because the world will end if they can't wear them.

I can understand how annoying a mistake will be and I do think they should correct your DD's hoody (and if I were the PTA person who'd made the mistake I'd be offering to pay for it), but I can't see them agreeing to reprint the lot.

NoSquirrels · 21/06/2018 12:43

When laying up pages we noticed a child named Poopy, the school had mistyped Poppy

Takethemdown · 21/06/2018 12:44

If she finds the name so distressing why have you added it as a middle name? Presumably you have got permission from ex or court permission to change the name as needed legally. If I had managed to get that there's no way I would have included his name at all.

PolkerrisBeach · 21/06/2018 12:45

Someone would have received a proof and signed it off. This is standard practice and it used to be my job to sign off all sorts of marketing material. You have to confirm you're happy with not only spelling but layout, font etc before it goes to print.

Our school does not get involved with production of Hoodies for this reason. If a parent wishes to step in and organise it, that's up to them.

My daughter's 2017 leaver's hoodie has been relegated to the "old clothes to take to Guide camp" pile.

clary · 21/06/2018 12:46

I presume punctuation is a missing hyphen

OP I see why your dd is upset re the name, though why would she want to then use it on the hoody as a middle name?

Agree with others, let it go. Quite glad now none of mine had these. And yy, tea towels, calendars, hoodies, all total PITA jobs for the PTA. Do you have another child at the school or can you just bid farewell to their unhelpfulness?

cardeyscat · 21/06/2018 12:46

People like you make me never want to be on the PTA.

ICantCopeAnymore · 21/06/2018 12:46

Can you not just order one yourself direct from the supplier and correct the mistake? That's what I would personally do.

Do you volunteer for the PTA? Did you help at all? Some of our PTA are pricks a pain in the arse, but at things like this for our leavers, they do try their best.

MissGiddyPants · 21/06/2018 12:48

Data Protection? What are you talking about?

greendale17 · 21/06/2018 12:48

YABU and quite frankly completely unreasonable.

AIBU to expect all hoodies to be recalled and corrected? Her friends will have the wrong name on.

Yes you are. At best they should replace the hoodie with your child’s correct name. No one else cares about your child’s surname

AForegoneConclusion · 21/06/2018 12:49

Ours were presented on the last day of school MamTDM -so put on at 2.30pm and worn to the after school meet up. That was is. No way would they have been allowed to wear them daily at school for a few months. That is why ours is now used as a mucking out the horses jumper -it has no other purpose and DD has an entirely different friendship group (as most of them do I think).

wellhonestly · 21/06/2018 12:50

What a shame. Is your daughter devastated?

My son's (senior) school just put on the leavers' hoodies whatever name the pupil asked for, not everyone's name. They actually got his wrong, but he thought it was funny and still wears it proudly for a laugh a year later.

It never entered our heads to ask for the money back, but then he tended to organise all that kind of school stuff himself and we weren't really surprised at that kind of "duhhhh" service from the school. Their leavers' year book was never published and I don't expect it ever will be now.

AForegoneConclusion · 21/06/2018 12:52

The Data Protection bit confuses me- I know/knew all the names of the children in my kids school form groups. Presumably they haven't given out addresses, dates of birth etc? Just confirmed surnames? Who gives a shit about that?

PolkerrisBeach · 21/06/2018 12:52

The Data Protection thing comes into play at our school - the school will refuse to hand over a list of the names of children. So whoever is organising hoodies will has to collect names separately. If you misspell your child's name or your handwriting is so bad that it can't be read, that's not school's fault.

You can see why with the fuss the OP is prepared to make why schools refuse to get involved with it all.

Snowysky20009 · 21/06/2018 12:52

Ours were worn for one day then are at the back of the wardrobe- along with end of year 11 and year 13.

SoupDragon · 21/06/2018 12:52

Does anyone actually have a child that wears said Tshirt/hoody after the first week

Me. DD is still wearing her Y6 hoody from last year and DS2 has adopted DS1’s secondary school one.

This happened at our primary inDS2’s year. The company agreed to reprint a small order with the right name - one for the child with the wrong name and a couple for children who had missed the original deadline. All parents are now issued with the proof and asked to check it.

Petalflowers · 21/06/2018 12:53

Far enough to get a new hoody for your dc, but you can't Expect everyone else’s hoodies to be recalled. No-one else has probably even noticed the mistake.

TwoBlueShoes · 21/06/2018 12:54

Just accept the hoodie, so she can wear it and fit in with her friends.

It's not ideal but there will be no money to correct the mistake so it can't be helped. I mean, it's primary school, they'll grow out of it soon and then it will be shoved in the back of a cupboard and never seen again.

No one will probably even notice anyway.

AhhhhThatsBass · 21/06/2018 12:54

YABVVU.

Stickerrocks · 21/06/2018 12:54

YABU. If another parent pointed out to me that their DC's name was misspelt, I would probably say "Oh dear, that's terrible" but I really couldn't care less. It is disappointing for your DD, but there won't be a single other person who genuinely wants to return their hoodie, just at the only time when they will wear them, simply to have your DC's name reprinted. I agree with every other poster that they are a 5 minute wonder, especially at primary school level.

Namechangedforthispost18 · 21/06/2018 12:55

I have helped at discos in the past and school trips, I have a restricting illness now. My Husband has also helped a lot at the school.

Ex wouldn't agree to ditch his name, middle name is better than nothing and who uses middles names?

The matter has become worse by their lack of understanding and by avoiding us and the other parents who have disappointed DC.

JELLYFISHANDCHIPS · 21/06/2018 12:55

This is exactly why I refused to get sucked in to spunking 20 quid on a hoodie my kid would have worn once on the day she left school. Complete waste of money.

10" quiche Grin

Glaciferous · 21/06/2018 12:58

There was a mistake on our Y6 leavers' hoodies. A few children's names were left off by accident. The company has supplied us with new and correct ones free of charge. If the school has made a mistake in the info they supplied to the company producing the hoodies, it is the school's responsibility to sort it out!

FatBarry · 21/06/2018 12:58

No one will be wearing them after the end of the summer holidays

^ this

Mine would probably have laughed and taken the piss out of it.
