School leavers hoodie is wrong

Namechangedforthispost18 · 21/06/2018 12:00

We ordered a school leavers hoodie for our dd, at a cost of nearly £20.
The PTA were in charge all proceeds going to the school, we recently changed DD surname however old surnames is now a middle name.

So we asked for previous surname and new one to be on it so the kids in class would know who it was and it would have the new surname we legally have to use on too.

The front has the initials on and is correct, both surnames.

The back is completely wrong.

They've left out punctuation within her name, and it only includes her old surname.

The school are claiming it is the PTA's fault, PTA are claiming it is a data protection issue (although it was handed from 1 person to the next to another) and that they couldn't clarify names however we confirmed it via facebook and have screenshots, we are not the only one to have a child with an incorrect name on the hoodie.

The pta and school are refusing to recall the hoodies or communicate with us or update us. Yet they've updated another parent and told them the wrong name will be scraped off and the right one stuck on top (it will look shit).

AIBU to expect all hoodies to be recalled and corrected? Her friends will have the wrong name on.

Also we the leavers are wearing theirs but the children without correct named hoodies have had them taken and are left out. This is causing other kids to laugh at these pupils.
The pta member who royally f up, her child is blaming the parents for giving her mother the wrong spellings etc and is intimidating the kids.

The school arent touching the issue with a barge pole.

Do I have rights as a consumer?

Let it go OP, you're being ridiculous.

Recalled indeed. Ask for your money back if it's such an issue.

TeenTimesTwo · 21/06/2018 12:16

In similarish circumstances at primary our T-shirt printing company did one extra with the correct spelling free of charge. Everyone else just had the t-shirt with the incorrect spelling.
If there are a couple of names to correct I would suggest the PTA sees if they can get 2 more done and they cover the extra costs. But you can't reasonably expect all the hoodies to be replaced.

CAAKE · 21/06/2018 12:17

What shampoeee said 👆

thecatsthecats · 21/06/2018 12:17

By the way - I only mention it because you mention current bullying... getting all the hoodies recalled is a sure-fire way to get your daughter picked on. I can imagine some idiot saying her new name in a silly voice.

JacquesHammer · 21/06/2018 12:17

How did you do the order OP - was it written or verbal?

AhWeCanDanceIfWeWantTo · 21/06/2018 12:18

If you just changed her name recently then the name on the hoodie is what all her friends and classmates will have known her as up until recently. It’s not like they’ll be wondering who the name is.

Pandora79 · 21/06/2018 12:18

You want them to recall all the hoodies and have them all changed?

Yabu!

WeShouldOpenABar · 21/06/2018 12:19

YABU I left school 15 odd years ago if someone in my class had changed their name just before school ended I'd have no memory of it now the old name will be more memorable to her classmates whatever strength of feeling you have about it.

humblesims · 21/06/2018 12:19

You’re making a mountain out of a molehill. If you recently changed your surname, everyone will know who she is. And they’ll have grown out of them in six months time anyway and they’ll lie in a drawer. Mistakes happen - a PTA VOLUNTEER will have spent hours of her (and I bet it was a woman) time coordinating these hoodies
I agree

EdWinchester · 21/06/2018 12:19

Bit annoying, I’m sure.

But not worth getting het up over.

In my experience, they wear them about twice.

Mamadothehump · 21/06/2018 12:19

Have you only just received the hoody? When it's nearly July??? I would be more pissed off about that than anything else!!
Misses point of thread.......

UrgentScurryfunge · 21/06/2018 12:19

So who would pay for all the replacements, the PTA (a charity of volunteers to support the school), the printing company (not their error) or you?

Put it down to a mild disappointment and move on.

Fluckle · 21/06/2018 12:20

I did the leavers hoodies a few years ago. Most thankless task ever, and I've been on PTAs for years so I've got a looooong list of thankless tasks.

It's unfortunate but no one did it on purpose and pp's are right, within 18 months it'll be too small anyway. It had her previous name on it, not a completely wrong one. That's the name she's been known as for most of her schooling (is that right??), and therefore probably the one most of her friends think of anyway.

Give it back and get a refund. Or keep it for posterity and forget about the details. Those are your choices realistically.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 21/06/2018 12:21

This is my job for my PTA at the moment, I'm dead scared of getting a name wrong but all I'm doing is passing on the names that are given to me.
Who did you inform of the name change - the PTA volunteer directly? If so then it is their problem, I'd ask for them to do you a new hoodie with the correct name for no charge - costs could maybe come out of the funds the PTA raise which are to benefit the rest of the school.
I think expecting ALL the hoodies to be recalled and corrected is a massive waste of time, money and clothing and YABU.

MaterialReality · 21/06/2018 12:22

It doesn't seem worth the hassle. YABVU to want all hoodies to be recalled and corrected.

I once had a parent complain to me that after I'd organised, filmed and made DVDs of a school play, I'd listed their daughter as Daisy May rather than Daisy-May (not real name). No, I was not going to remake all the DVDs to correct that.

Small mistakes happen. Sometimes the effort and expense needed to fix them would be wildly disproportionate to the difference it would actually make.

Namechangedforthispost18 · 21/06/2018 12:23

The new name she has used as known name at school for over a year.

School have just called. We can either accept the wrong one at full cost or get a refund and no hoodie at all.

OP posts:
MidniteScribbler · 21/06/2018 12:23

So you're upset that the name she has been known by for the last 16-18 years is on the jumper, and you want one that she has only used for a few months on it instead?

You're right I was BU to think of the school would recall them on reflection I don't expect that.

I expect my daughters to be right, and us not to be told like it or lump it.

AForegoneConclusion · 21/06/2018 12:25

It is a £20 hoodie worn a handful of times (if not once) and then left to hang in the wardrobe until it is chucked out or thrown in the loft. DDs is now worn down to the yard to muck out the horses in! I agree it is a bit rubbish they have the name wrong on a certain part of the hoodie, but recalling the lot for reprinting (no doubt at the cost of the PTA or school) is ridiculous for such a trivial thing. They should at most, apologise and refund the £20.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 21/06/2018 12:25

The school arent touching the issue with a barge pole

Because it's not 'an issue.' It's a mistake and not a big deal. You haven't mentioned your DD being upset about it and other kids are misspelled as well.

Get a refund for yours and let it go.

KittiesInsane · 21/06/2018 12:25

Has anyone in a big school ever had all the hoodies correct?

Between them my kids now have 6 Leavers' Hoodies. The only one without at least one mistake is from the 10-pupil primary. Standard practice seems to be to issue the affected child with a new one and leave all the rest.

BarbarianMum · 21/06/2018 12:25

I should sue them for hurt and upset caused OP. And maybe do a Daily Mail sadface.

heateallthebuns · 21/06/2018 12:27

I do think they should let you have your hoody for free though. Or cost.

BarbarianMum · 21/06/2018 12:27

Does anyone actually have a child that wears said Tshirt/hoody after the first week. All ours end up disgarded in a drawer. Bring back the days when they used to do tea towels.
