To think Lord Sugar should be sacked from the BBC for his tweet?

BlondeSea · 20/06/2018 14:10

Earlier today Lord Sugar tweeted a photo of the Senegal football team with a caption along the lines of "I recognise these from the beaches in Marbella selling sunglasses!"

He doctored the image to add pictures of sunglasses. People challenged him online and he insisted it was funny and refused to apologise however since then he has apologised - he's obviously been forced to.

I won't add the image here, it's now been taken down but you can see it if you google it. AIBU to think this is disgusting, not funny, and he should be fired from the BBC?

@IcedPurple Care to explain why you described the fight against anti-semitism in Labour as a 'witch hunt' then?

And then as a 'bandwagon'?

And why you put anti-semitism in inverted commas in at least two separate posts?

And for the record, are you claiming that there is not an anti-semitism problem within Labour?

AbsentmindedWoman · 20/06/2018 15:15

He's a wanker. Of course it's racist.

Bewildered that some folks are amused by it. Just how is it supposed to be funny?

LighthouseSouth · 20/06/2018 15:15

I don't get it
Also I'm not outraged on behalf of white posters, as some people seem to be implying, thereby assuming that certain posters are white, which always confuses me...
If my parents thought it was funny, I'd be flummoxed. Once again, I find myself thinking the casual racism of the 70s was almost better, because there wasn't a disingenuous "how is that racist?

This is undisputably racist though surely?

IcedPurple · 20/06/2018 15:16

I have a genuine question - if he had put a picture of the Swedish team and photoshopped ikea furniture in need of assembly in front of them, would this be considered racist/as racist.

It would be unfunny, but not racist. "Swedish" is a nationality, not a race. IKEA is a Swedish company. The Swedish football team are.... Swedish.

By contrast, Sugar's 'joke' relied on the amazing fact that professional footballers from Senegal and sunglasses sellers on Spanish beaches are all black. Never mind that there are more than 50 countries in Africa, and hundreds of millions of people with black skin.

So not the same thing.

Heyduggeesflipflop · 20/06/2018 15:16

How is this in any way like the situation with corbyn and anti semitism?

Corbyn presides over the government in waiting - his views and those of his followers may well be official policy and therefore law at some stage.

The Labour Party is a lunatic fringe. Sugar by contrast is just a goady working class lad come good

BartholinsSister · 20/06/2018 15:17

But he's a rich white male so that logic is irrelevant

Yet also from a historically oppressed minority.

GorgonLondon · 20/06/2018 15:17

@Bombardier25966

If @IcedPurple had indeed been pointing out the hypocrisy in objecting to one type of racism while perpetrating another, that would be fair enough.

In fact, they have repeatedly referred to the objections to anti-semitism in Labour as a 'witch hunt' and a 'bandwagon', making it absolutely crystal clear that they are denying the reality of that racism.

Bombardier25966 · 20/06/2018 15:19

Corbyn presides over the government in waiting

Well this is something we can agree on Heydug. Not long now! Smile

PoodlesOfFund · 20/06/2018 15:19

Clearly racist.

Ironic that he did actually get his start flogging crap to people though

stopgap · 20/06/2018 15:20

What a ghastly man. My (Jewish) husband said he should know better than to make a slight about another minority.

One of my 6-year-old son’s football heroes is Sadio Mane (captain of Senegal, and Liverpool forward) and we were thrilled yesterday when his side beat Poland.

Birdsgottafly · 20/06/2018 15:21

"Saying that something looks like something else (which it isn't) is commonly used in humour; "

And comparing tree shapes to dicks, or clouds to spaceships, is fine. They are things, these are people.

princesstiasmum, Alf Garnet was Racist and has always been known as such. The writers, Warren Mitchell and Tony Booth,st it so he would be shown to be a fool and ignorant for his opinions.

When I was in Uni as a Mature student there was a Woman from Thailand on the course who told us about her experiences in every job she had done. All the "jokes" about working the bars/dancing/ping pong balls.

When my DH was in hospital, the comments to the Nurses (from Singapore) from older Men, who had served abroad in WW2, were disgusting.

It's disrespectful, belittling and trying to put people "back in their place".

GorgonLondon · 20/06/2018 15:21

@IcedPurple For a lot of people, stereotyping is only unacceptable when it affects their own group, or a group they care about.

Indeed, this is presumably why you think it's fine to discredit the reality of anti-semitism in the Labour Party by repeatedly putting it in scare quotes and saying that those who object to it are part of a 'bandwagon' and a 'witch hunt'.

Personally I object to racism against all groups. Shame that Corbyn and his grotesque cronies don't.

@Bombardier25966 How wonderful to see how happy you are that a faction who are actively anti-semitic might soon be in power in this country. As a Jewish person whose family fought for this country in two world wars, and who have fought against racism in all its forms for decades, it makes me fucking sick.

IcedPurple · 20/06/2018 15:22

*@IcedPurple Care to explain why you described the fight against anti-semitism in Labour as a 'witch hunt' then?

And then as a 'bandwagon'?

And why you put anti-semitism in inverted commas in at least two separate posts?*

Because I do not believe Jeremy Corbyn is in any way anti-semitic and I do believe that the accusations against him are a witch-hunt designed to topple him and install someone more in tune with the political wishes of "Lord" Sugar and the Blairites. Happily they have failed.

And for the record, are you claiming that there is not an anti-semitism problem within Labour?

Yes I am claiming that though it's irrelevant to the double standards of "Lord" Sugar. Not that you seem terribly interested in the racism of said "Lord".

For this reason, I'm not going to discuss this issue with you any further as I feel you have an agenda which has little to do with the topic under discussion.

Bombardier25966 · 20/06/2018 15:24

In fact, they have repeatedly referred to the objections to anti-semitism in Labour as a 'witch hunt' and a 'bandwagon', making it absolutely crystal clear that they are denying the reality of that racism.

You're trying to put words in their mouth, that's not how I interpreted their post at all.

There is anti semitism in the Labour Party. And in the Conservative Party. And society as a whole. It is entirely unacceptable. There was/ is a witch hunt against Jeremy Corbyn over the issue, instigated by the Board of Deputies with clear political motives.

You can acknowledge discrimination and at the same time be aware of political motivations of those shouting loudest. The two are not mutually exclusive.

GorgonLondon · 20/06/2018 15:25

Wow. You, @IcedPurple , brought up Corbyn and his foul anti-semitism - which you deny even when HE HIMSELF and his cronies have admitted that Labour has an anti-semitism problem - within the first few posts on this thread, and you dare to say that I have an agenda!

Your dishonesty, backtracking, and contradictory posts are utterly shameful.

I said in my very first post and every subsequent one that racism is wrong and that I think Alan Sugar's tweet was racist.

You on the other hand couldn't wait to start pushing your thinly veiled shit about a secret agenda of 'Blairites' who want to topple your Beloved Leader.

PoodlesOfFund · 20/06/2018 15:25

I have a genuine question - if he had put a picture of the Swedish team and photoshopped ikea furniture in need of assembly in front of them, would this be considered racist/as racist.

If he had photoshopped them assembling the stadium that would be funny.

But the Swedish haven't been the butts of racist or xenophobic abuse for years and IKEA is a golbal brand worth billions closely associated with SWEDEN, it's not nearly the same as poor people selling glasses at the beach.

*I just realised that I capitalised Sweden in the style of IKEA unintentionally but I'm amused under the circumstances so haven't changed it.

GorgonLondon · 20/06/2018 15:26

@Bombardier25966 Unfortunately for you, you cross-posted with @IcedPurple 's post where they confirmed that they did indeed mean that, and that they do indeed deny the pervasive and disgusting anti-semitism of Corbyn and his crew even when they themselves have admitted it.

Birdsgottafly · 20/06/2018 15:27

I think Lord Sugar should say to Mohamed Al Fayed, next time he sees him "Don't I recognise you from herding camels when I was on holiday in Egypt?" and see how that goes down.

It's also on a par with saying that Sadiq Khan was working in a bomb factory before becoming Mayor. Would that be funny?

Bombardier25966 · 20/06/2018 15:28

How wonderful to see how happy you are that a faction who are actively anti-semitic might soon be in power in this country.

I don't see you complaining about the current government and their ill treatment of multiple minority groups. Tell us about the fighting you've done against their discriminatory policies, and the vile actions of some of their members?

There is bad in all groups, in all sections of society. It's a shame that you choose to ignore the discriminatory actions towards the other groups.

IcedPurple · 20/06/2018 15:29

you dare to say that I have an agenda!

Given that you've devoted vastly more energy to attacking Corbyn (and me) rather than the actual subject of this thread, it's glaringly obvious that you do have an agenda.

Anyway, like I said, others may facilitate you dragging this thread off-topic to suit said agenda, but I won't be one of them. Feel free to up the smears, canned talking points and emotional language to fever pitch, I won't be responding.

Bye.

Birdsgottafly · 20/06/2018 15:30

If you want to talk about Antisemitism in the Labour party, start your own thread, rather than derail someone else's.

Battleax · 20/06/2018 15:30

I’m slightly disturbed that so many people think it’s funny TBH.

What’s the joke predicated on, if not a race based stereotype?

PurpleRobe · 20/06/2018 15:30

I don't get the joke. Is he saying all black men look alike?

The resort I am at in Spain is currently full.of cockeny wankers... should I make a meme about " Lord" sugar and Brita abroad ?!?!?!

PurpleRobe · 20/06/2018 15:30

*Brits

MariaMadita · 20/06/2018 15:32

It isn't funny imo.

But Idk whether it's racist... Ignorant and prejudiced? Idk.
