To think Lord Sugar should be sacked from the BBC for his tweet?

BlondeSea · 20/06/2018 14:10

Earlier today Lord Sugar tweeted a photo of the Senegal football team with a caption along the lines of "I recognise these from the beaches in Marbella selling sunglasses!"

He doctored the image to add pictures of sunglasses. People challenged him online and he insisted it was funny and refused to apologise however since then he has apologised - he's obviously been forced to.

I won't add the image here, it's now been taken down but you can see it if you google it. AIBU to think this is disgusting, not funny, and he should be fired from the BBC?

What do the footballers have in common with the sunglass-sellers? If it’s just their physical appearance, i.e. being black, then of course that’s racist.

kalapattar · 20/06/2018 14:32

Seems he got annoyed on Twitter with Corbyn and anti-semitism

www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/mar/31/mcdonnell-calls-for-lord-sugar-to-delete-corbyn-hitler-tweet

No doubt someone is preparing an image of Alan Sugar and the KKK now.

musicinthe00ssucks · 20/06/2018 14:33

Who is going to fire him?

TanteRose · 20/06/2018 14:34

Gosh trip thanks for the explanation Hmm

So if Sugar had tweeted a photo of the Japanese team (in the same group as Senegal btw), brandishing photoshopped chopsticks and saying "These guys looks like the cooks at my local Chinese takeaway" that would have been "funny" too?

Noqont · 20/06/2018 14:34

As my husband said....people should stop being faux offended on behalf of someone else

And maybe your husband should stop deciding how others should feel on behalf of someone else.

This. There is no 'grey area' here, how the fuck can it not be racist? It's so racist!

kalapattar · 20/06/2018 14:38

it's well known among his friends and family that black people like him are the typical beach sellers of junk that target holiday maker

Some people would say that only black people can make such a joke about themselves.

In the same way that Jewish people can make jokes about themselves and stereotypes - but non Jewish people shouldn't make jokes about Jewish people etc etc etc (insert name of group)

bbcessex · 20/06/2018 14:38

68Anon - your words “black people like him” are very sad.

Anyway - #AlanSugar is the #racist here, so back to the main protagonist.

@68Anon

So what if your 'African husband' (if he exists) found it funny? It doesn't make it any less racist. Just makes your husband a bit odd to find somebody demeaning his race funny.

Ruffian · 20/06/2018 14:39

I don't understand how it's funny - surely it would only be funny to a racist?

ShesSoUnusual · 20/06/2018 14:40

Fucking ghastly bigoted pig.

MereDintofPandiculation · 20/06/2018 14:41

I'm surprised so many people pay attention to this wrinkly old pensioner bigot.

Because he's a bigot? In which case his appearance and age are irrelevant.
Or because he's wrinkly and old? in which case that makes your views better than his ... how?

Eminado · 20/06/2018 14:41

68Anon

As a black African I can tell you that i found that tweet appallingly racist.

And to all the people on this thread saying it was funny, cop onto yourselves.

Shameful attitudes on here.

MontyDog589 · 20/06/2018 14:42

I’m pretty sure that’s racist. He’s likening the football team to poor migrants who are forced to sell sunglasses on the basis of the colour of their skin.

68Anon · 20/06/2018 14:42

bbcessex he actually said 'black people like me'.

@Dickybow321 My husband definitely exists.

DailyMailFail101 · 20/06/2018 14:42

Yes he should be sacked! It was not funny at all.

RLOU88 · 20/06/2018 14:42

On another note, did you see the fans cleaning up the stand after the match had finished? Lovely people and a lovely country Senegal, same as The Gambia.

kalapattar · 20/06/2018 14:42

Man says something sexist about women - or plays to what he thinks is a stereotype.

Some women laugh and think it's funny and true.

Doesn't mean that it's not sexist. Of course there are always people who think others are over reacting and getting offended for no reason. But it fuels everyday sexism.

Same for this. No doubt some people think others are overreacting and getting offended. But it's all part of everyday racism.

Moonkissedlegs · 20/06/2018 14:43

Saying that something looks like something else (which it isn't) is commonly used in humour; from Shakespeare to modern stand up.

Yeah....um, this doesn't excuse blatant racism.

HTH.

I think you need to take a long hard look at yourself if you found that funny.

IcedPurple · 20/06/2018 14:43

black people like him

"Black people like him?"

Really?

If your husband a beach sunglasses salesman? If not, then what does he have in common with them other than the colour of his skin? Something shared by tens, indeed hundreds of millions of other people, rich, poor, tall, short, clever, stupid etc.

It IS a racist 'joke'. Your husband's opinion doesn't change that.

He said, if you can't have a laugh at something like that then when can you?

Fine. Can we have a 'laugh' about how all Jewish people look the same?

Would "Lord" Sugar, who's been on the anti-Corbyn 'anti-semitism' bandwagon, see the 'humour' in that?

Moonkissedlegs · 20/06/2018 14:44

But it's all part of everyday racism.

The thing is, this is even like subtle, insidious everyday racism. This is just blatant, OMG wtf, racism!

shinycat · 20/06/2018 14:45

I sometimes get fed up of fairly innocuous stuff being labelled as racist and offensive, and being afraid to say anything for fear of offending, but I have to say that I do think this was rude and racist yes......

He has apologised. However, he should not have said it, and yeah, he is a massive twit.

I do 'get' the joke, and yeah on some levels it is a (bad and tasteless) joke, but it is still racist, and out of order frankly. And even if the odd black person thinks it's not racist, that doesn't mean it isn't!

Alan Sugar gets more ridiculous by the week.
