To think Lord Sugar should be sacked from the BBC for his tweet?

BlondeSea · 20/06/2018 14:10

Earlier today Lord Sugar tweeted a photo of the Senegal football team with a caption along the lines of "I recognise these from the beaches in Marbella selling sunglasses!"

He doctored the image to add pictures of sunglasses. People challenged him online and he insisted it was funny and refused to apologise however since then he has apologised - he's obviously been forced to.

I won't add the image here, it's now been taken down but you can see it if you google it. AIBU to think this is disgusting, not funny, and he should be fired from the BBC?

Like what was going through his head as he typed out the characters in that tweet?

kalapattar · 20/06/2018 14:47

When lots of people were telling him it was racist, he double downed on it and attacked the people who were telling him it was racist.

kalapattar · 20/06/2018 14:49

I am surprised that the sexist Piers Morgan hasn't said anything. He usually is the first to attack Alan Sugar.

bbcessex · 20/06/2018 14:49

68Anon - I know. You were recounting his words. Which were, essentially “black people ‘like me’ are beach salesmen, so good one, Alan’.

sir Alan on women’s hockey ‘last time is saw them they were serving coffee / lap dancing / menial task’ BECAUSE the shared characteristic is sex.

And on, and on, and on

I agree this is racist. Very sad.

Also sad to see how people like @IcedPurple use it immediately as yet another opportunity to try to discredit and justify the racism suffered by Jewish people.

BlondeSea · 20/06/2018 14:52

@Moonkissedlegs That's what I thought- there's no grey area here, when DH told me what Lord Sugar had tweeted I actually couldn't believe it, it's out and out openly racist!

Or to a tall person, 'didn't I watch you play basketball last week?' (because the shared characteristic is height.

For those offended on behalf of the footballers, why is this not sexist when sex is a shared characteristic?

IcedPurple · 20/06/2018 14:54

Congratulations on missing my point spectacularly.

Sorry I made you 'sad' though.

@68Anon just because the one black persons you asked doesn't find it offensive doesn't mean it is not offensive. It's called stereotyping, which is goes hand and hand with racism. Seeing as though Alan Sugar is from a sector of the community that has suffered similar stereotyping and anti-semitism. I thought he would be much more mindful of the impact of this!

Bombardier25966 · 20/06/2018 14:58

Gorgon, I took IcedPurple's comment to be pointing out Sugar's double standards. He's quick to shout anti semitism, yet happy to play dumb when it comes to his own bigotry. Stereotyping any group is unacceptable, yes?

Correct. I suspect 'gorgon' knows this.

Stereotyping any group is unacceptable, yes?

For a lot of people, stereotyping is only unacceptable when it affects their own group, or a group they care about.

Poloshot · 20/06/2018 15:01

Perhaps he does recognise them

IcedPurple · 20/06/2018 15:02

If the pps H found it funny and hes black, why does everyone else

Good thing there's only one black person in the world, and he's married to a MM poster eh?

Watch the Alf Garnett clip on youtube about his friend . Marigold, and the asian shopkeeper, no one even suggested it was racist

Alf Garnett not racist? Well you learn something new everyday.Hmm

BartholinsSister · 20/06/2018 15:07

I thought it wasn't possible for someone from a historically oppressed minority to be a racist?

IcedPurple · 20/06/2018 15:09

I found it funny because you could put any team's photo in it and get the same effect.

Right. So he would have got the same 'effect' if he had put, say, the Swedish team in the photo?

So why do you think he didn't put the Swedish team in the photo? At a guess?

BlondeSea · 20/06/2018 15:10

@Nikephorus if you think the joke would work with a team of multiple ethnicities you're either an idiot or wilfully ignorant. The whole premise of the joke relies on the idea that the football team look like black African men selling sunglasses on European beaches.

@BartholinsSister

But he's a rich white male so that logic is irrelevant.

gillybeanz · 20/06/2018 15:12

Not funny, but hardly disgusting.
with his money he can say what he likes really, I'm sure it wouldn't bother him if BBC did sack him, he'll never starve.

crispysausagerolls · 20/06/2018 15:12

I have a genuine question - if he had put a picture of the Swedish team and photoshopped ikea furniture in need of assembly in front of them, would this be considered racist/as racist?

BlondeSea · 20/06/2018 15:14

@crispysausagerolls is IKEA considered negative in the same way selling cheap tat to tourists for a very low amount is? Are people who work in IKEA ridiculed in the same way beach sellers are?
