To think Lord Sugar should be sacked from the BBC for his tweet?

BlondeSea · 20/06/2018 14:10

Earlier today Lord Sugar tweeted a photo of the Senegal football team with a caption along the lines of "I recognise these from the beaches in Marbella selling sunglasses!"

He doctored the image to add pictures of sunglasses. People challenged him online and he insisted it was funny and refused to apologise however since then he has apologised - he's obviously been forced to.

I won't add the image here, it's now been taken down but you can see it if you google it. AIBU to think this is disgusting, not funny, and he should be fired from the BBC?

@Bombardier25966 @GorgonLondon, I look forward to hearing how you have been fighting Islamophobia in the Conservative Party.

Why the fuck would I when I have never been a member of the Conservative Party nor voted Conservative in my entire life nor ever will?

Funny how much anti-semites suddenly care so much about Muslims when it enables a bit of whataboutery.

A decent human being, a decent member of the Labour Party would despair of seeing the cesspit it has become and would be distraught by the fact that it's been overrun by racism.

Instead of this smug whataboutery that makes it perfectly clear you don't give a flying fuck.

IIIustriousIyIIlogical · 20/06/2018 16:02

So what's the demographic of Sunglasses Sellers on a Marbella Beach??

Nikephorus · 20/06/2018 16:02

And so I ask you again...... why did Sugar just so happen to post a picture of the Senagalese team? They're hardly the most high-profile footie team at the World Cup, are they?
And I'll refer you to my original post that suggested he may well have been attention-seeking - heaven forbid that a so-called celebrity should post something provocative just to get attention....

GorgonLondon · 20/06/2018 16:02

@Birdsgottafly Indeed. It's not what this thread was about.

Do you know who brought up the topic of antisemitism in the Labour Party, within about 5 posts from the start of the thread?

Yes, that would be @IcedPurple , who posted about 3 posts banging the 'antisemitism doesn't exist in Labour and it's all a witchhunt and a bandwagon' drum before anyone else mentioned it.

It was only when I and a couple of other posters challenged this that it suddenly became "oooh you've got an agenda I'm not going to respond bye"

It's all there in black and white at the very start of the thread.

IcedPurple · 20/06/2018 16:04

You're going to have to clarify.

If it's all about 'people' and if a blonde blue-eyed man is as likely to be seen selling sunglasses in Marbella as a black man, why post a pic of the Senegal team? Like I said, they're barely known in the UK. No players in the premiership. I doubt even those who follow football closely could name a single player.

So why not post a pic of a better-known team? Why would posting a pic of a fairly obscure team get more 'attention'? Seeing as it has nothing whatsoever to do with skin colour or anything like that.

Gilead · 20/06/2018 16:05

YANBU at all. It's racist. I'm sorry but racism is alive and well and has been on the increase on these boards for quite some time.

crispysausagerolls · 20/06/2018 16:07

I just realised that I capitalised Sweden in the style of IKEA unintentionally but I'm amused under the circumstances so haven't changed it.

This made me lol!!! Thanks for explaining/answering my question - make sense. I see someone found a much better equivalent with the Japanese team.

Can't say anything nowadays without it being made to look racist/sexist/wrong!

You could try not saying anything which is in fact racist or sexist.

I find it works quite well.

GaryBarlowsTaxReturn · 20/06/2018 16:11

Of course it's racist. In what way is it funny? FFS. Posters defending it are either hard of thinking or bigots.

So how is it it not racist?

IIIustriousIyIIlogical · 20/06/2018 16:17

I must be a really bad person because I find it hard to get outraged by most stuff on MN...

kalapattar · 20/06/2018 16:17

Daily Mail reaction is interesting.

Grin

This - it's not rocket science, is it....

IcedPurple · 20/06/2018 16:21

@kalapappar

Yeah, it's like the "Oh, with all this #metoo lark you can't say anything to a woman without being accused of sexual harassment these days."

How about you don't say or do anything to a woman you wouldn't want her to say or do to you? Worth a try?

misspriggy · 20/06/2018 16:22

Anyone can be mocked.. And all humour is in someway critical.

IcedPurple · 20/06/2018 16:24

You 'mock' international footballers for having the same colour skin as sunglass sellers in Spain?

kalapattar · 20/06/2018 16:26

Anyone can be mocked.. And all humour is in someway critical

Usually when someone mocks a group of people based on a stereotype (if they are not a member of that group), that makes them racist / sexist / homophobic / anti-Semitic etc.....

saganorenscarandcoat · 20/06/2018 16:27

How is it on any way funny?

Moonkissedlegs · 20/06/2018 16:27

No, the whole premise does NOT rely on the idea of black African men selling sunglasses on European beaches, it relies on the idea of PEOPLE selling sunglasses on European (or anywhere) beaches. Those posters who can only picture black men selling sunglasses are the racist ones, not those of us who can see any colour.

What a load of absolute BOLLOCKS. Can you actually read what you are writing?

misspriggy · 20/06/2018 16:27

Why not? If we were in Africa and some African mocked the England team by comparing them to red faced trophy hunters or some such, you'd be so outraged?

We're all fair game, that's how humour works..

Moonkissedlegs · 20/06/2018 16:28

Anyone can be mocked.. And all humour is in someway critical.

You know what racism means... Right?

kalapattar · 20/06/2018 16:29

We're all fair game, that's how humour works

One person's 'humour' is very often the other person's racism.

Still, banter and all that......Used to justify loads of things.
