Oh god, one of my Texans has jumped straight on the "it's all the democrats fault for their laws, go Trump" band wagon on social media.
He's done this several times particular about Trump's racist inclinations. The irony seems utterly lost on him that he's Mexican and his partners entered the county illegally.

CheerfulYank · 20/06/2018 08:55

Shit, I forgot he was going to be in Duluth tonight! Shock That's only a few hours drive from me. I should have gone.

4 women were arrested in Ohio for refusing to leave their Senator's office. More governors are being pressured to withdraw their troops from the border.

This has made me sick inside but I also haven't seen so many Republicans speak out against him on anything else. If nothing else it's given me the tiniest flicker of hope that most people still have a line they won't cross.

Yes, Perking. I might feel a little more guilty about not getting her name right if she had a better relationship with the truth and a soul.Wink

It has come to something when even the Telegraph is carrying details of how bad the Trump administration and spokespeople are:-

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/06/20/trump-confidant-accused-mocking-story-downs-syndrome-girl-taken/

I truly do not understand the mindset that these people seem to have - actually, I am relieved that I do not understand it Sad

I'm finding it difficult to type, let alone say. Detention centres for 'tender age' children. Three of them ....

I'm back with my usual whinge, which is why on earth has this bastard not been stopped yet?

ohmymimi · 20/06/2018 09:13

He wants the wall; he doesn't care about anything else, no amount of human misery will touch him (and he will never take responsibility for it). Everything is just a means to an end to him, and it's always just about his wants and needs.

('Freewheeling', er, rambling stream of shit, more like.)

'House GOP: Trump's immigration plea may fall short
In a freewheeling address behind closed doors, the president promised Republicans he’d support legislation that he panned just days ago.'

Maddow on why the White House want this cruel policy and are happy with the way it's going. Political advantage and the midterms.

This is absolutely devastating, I can't bear to think of those poor children - and babies and toddlers too?!

chartreuse · 20/06/2018 09:52

This situation is absolutely horrific. I actually can’t bring myself to listen to the audio recording, or read a lot of the articles. What has been playing on my mind in the last few days is the thought of the missing children. About a month ago, there was a link here about children who, rather than being in detention centres, were given to ‘foster carers’ and are now ‘lost’. In the photos I have seen there are teen aged boys but where are the girls? I dread to think what is happening to them.

On the NYT instagram yesterday there was a story of a woman who has been sent back to Guatemala but her little boy is still in a detention centre in Texas and she has no way of getting him back.

How can this be allowed to happen? Why is nobody stopping it?

We all remember the ‘checks and balances’ line, oh Trump won’t be able to do anything crazy because of the checks and balances in the system. What a lie.

BolleauxtoBankers · 20/06/2018 10:01

To add insult to injury, today is World Refugee Day.
"Checks and balances", my (extremely large) backside, I'm afraid, chartreuse. I know how you feel. My breath gets taken away daily because of this, a couple of Republicans are protesting vaguely against this new policy of Trump's (because make no mistake, "tender age shelters" are not enshrined in a law brought in by Democrats in the past, this is Trump's own personal evil take on things since May 2018) will achieve precisely nothing. I don't understand why there isn't a revolution in the US? Otherwise, the sickening analogy with the rise of Nazism will continue to be made, justifiably, and history will repeat itself, with immigrants being the scapegoats instead of Jews this time. I despair.

Roussette · 20/06/2018 10:01

It's far worse than first thought.

It was acknowledged by Federal officials that 1,500 children have 'gone missing'. That number is more likely to be 6,000

www.axios.com/unaccompanied-migrant-children-missing-reports-df58453a-ddbf-41fa-bf96-da55fb4d6439.html

The audio footage is harrowing.

PerkingFaintly · 20/06/2018 10:10

Just to remind folks, this is what else the Office of Refugee Resettlement, which runs these detention centres, is up to.

Scott Lloyd Tells All
In an alarming deposition, the director of the Office of Refugee Resettlement says forcing undocumented minors to carry unwanted pregnancies is in their “best interest.”
slate.com/news-and-politics/2018/04/aclu-deposition-shows-scott-lloyd-abused-power-to-prevent-undocumented-minors-from-getting-abortions.html

Scott Lloyd has devoted a significant chunk of his yearlong tenure in the federal government to a single crusade: attempting to prevent undocumented minors from terminating their unwanted pregnancies. Lloyd, the director of the Office of Refugee Resettlement, issued a new policy in March 2017 prohibiting all federally funded shelters from taking “any action that facilitates” abortion for unaccompanied minors without his “direction and approval.” At least five teenagers have since requested abortions; Lloyd has denied all five requests.
[...]
In one instance, Lloyd refused to let a minor known as Jane Poe obtain an abortion even though she was pregnant via rape. (Young female migrants face high rates of sexual assault.)

chartreuse · 20/06/2018 10:10

Thank Rousette, that’s exactly what I was thinking about.

I agree Bolleaux, the US seems to be sleep walking into a situation they will really regret. We all will.

lljkk · 20/06/2018 10:14

I wonder if a new extremist terrorist movement could arise on back of this. Certainly if there are sustained long-run detentions. Trauma of where they came from, trauma of the detention period, community identity as a targeted oppressed group, throw in an extremist ideology to tie it together and identify suitable 'bad guys'. Could happen.

ohmymimi · 20/06/2018 10:14

I was just watching a distraught Stephanie Ruble, outside a S. Texas 'holding facility', on O'Donnell (he was reporting from Brownsville). Both have been refused access. As she said 'where is the First Lady, why isn't she visiting these facilities, they'd have to let her in, why isn't she here comforting these little ones, holding their hands'. (Not verbatim, but the gist.)
Let's sees if that empty clothes horse, that so called 'independent' FLOTUS has an ounce of compassion in that coddle frame of hers.

The Trump official who tried to stop a detained immigrant from getting an abortion
www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2017/10/26/the-trump-official-who-tried-to-stop-a-detained-immigrant-from-getting-an-abortion/

Long before he became the head of a federal office for resettling refugees, E. Scott Lloyd built a career as a champion of religious values, holding strong antiabortion views that have now thrust him into the center of a national controversy.

His past work has also made him a target of critics who argue he is ill-prepared for his current role as director of the Office of Refugee Resettlement, a position he assumed in March [2017] within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Recently, the Trump appointee played a prominent role in impeding a detained undocumented teenager from obtaining an abortion, prompting a lawsuit in federal court.

Last week [Oct 2017], HHS — which is responsible for caring for detained unaccompanied minors — said “there is no constitutional right” for an immigrant minor to have an elective abortion while in federal custody.

Lloyd has personally intervened to try to persuade unaccompanied minor girls not to have abortions, according to an HHS official.

“When there’s a child in the program who is pregnant, he has been reaching out to her and trying to help as much as possible with life-affirming options,” the spokesman said.

CheerfulYank · 20/06/2018 10:22

Rousette while horrendous, that part has most always been the case, as the families/sponsors often do not want to be found. (Understand so.)

We're not sleepwalking. I think we're just not yet sure what to DO. This is happening so suddenly, the policy being enforced this way. Just since last month.

I have no money so I can't donate yet. (Have literally just had to ask MIL for $ to keep our electricity on.) Am thousands of miles from the border. I am calling every representative I can think of and I assure you I did not vote for this insanity. I will protest, I'm willing to be arrested, I've looked into refugee foster care...I'd love to do that. I'd rather they be with their parents obviously but at least I would keep them safe and comforted and not leave them crying in a fucking cage. But as DH and I have no income currently they wouldn't place a child with us.

It's all well and good to say that we should go tear down the building but this is America. There's a very real chance of leaving our own children parentless if we do.

All I can think of to do now is just keep the pressure on. I hope soon I'll be able to donate. I'm going to look on the website of the places where they are doing foster care and see if I can donate any THINGS, at least.

Some of the immigrant kids separated from parents now arriving in Michigan “are infants as young as three months of age,” says Michigan Dept. of Civil Rights.

For fuck's sake almost all of these people are Catholic. They don't need to be reminded of "life affirming options". That's despicable.

And yeah where is Melania? Laura Bush is furious, Michelle Obama is of course furious....but not the actual immigrant among them, oh noooo.
