what is it with cats?

Neighbour's cat keeps coming to our back door, crying to be let in. We've never let her in. She's just now hopped up on our window sill, giving out to us. We've never paid her any attention, given her any food, given her the least encouragement. Surely at this stage she should have realised that we're just not interested and she's barking up the wrong tree, so to speak.
Why do cats do this? Does she think that we should be overjoyed that she's picked us to do her bidding? If we'd shown her any kindness, given her food, would we now be her new owners? Is this how it happens when people steal someone else's cat? Why won't she be told?

Neighbours of ours years ago (a young couple with a little boy) had a kitten who would make a mad dash for our place every time she was let outside. She would stroll in and wander around the house, quite at home. We completely ignored her and didn't feed her, but she was not deterred. I'm sure the neighbours thought we were trying to steal their cat but we did nothing to encourage her.

She's still here ten years later (neighbours have long since moved) and still has a mind of her own!

Just a thought and I'm probably wrong, but is the cat treated well OP? The little boy in the family who our cat previously lived with thought she was a plaything. He wasn't cruel at all and he loved her to bits but she didn't appreciate being treated like a toy.

She still snarls and hisses if we deign to try to remove her from a bed or lap. How very dare we?! She's a darling really, just a madam! Grin

My neighbours cat keeps coming in my house. Sometimes I leave the back door open slightly if it's too warm and the other day I got the fright of my life when I walked into the kitchen and there it was, quite the thing, sitting down next to my dogs bowls after scoffing all his food! It then followed me about thinking I was going to get it something else before I put it outside and told it to go home haha. They're cheeky little pricks lol.

VikingBlonde · 19/06/2018 09:55

This is hilarious!

Cats are such arseholes. I was busy telling my neighbour who was making coochy coo noises at my cat that "she's very shy, she won't come near you I'm Afraid" and he said "well I quite often find her in my room when she come in the window so..." so that was me told haha!! GrinBlushSmile

We have a kids book called Six Dinner Sid about a cat who had at leat 6 owners. Very true indeed!

It's the only abusive, manipulative, one-sided relationship I'll succumb to. One snuggle with my fickle Playuh4Lyf and all is forgiven.
He goes away for days on end, sometimes weeks, to some hole the next road over. We call it his Mar-a-Lago getaway. Even a cat's gotta have a holiday.
Sometimes I'll be walking the dog at night along the towpath and suddenly the cat will appear out of nowhere, chasing the dog, running up to me for an ankle snuggle. Then he'll dash off into the shrubs, dash out again, run underneath the dogs legs, dash off... he'll just follow us and play us like flutes. It's so funny. It's like he's hunting us. Hmm

@Timeisslippingaway, that's a lot of anger towards a defenceless animal...

Notsureaboutit · 19/06/2018 10:06

Is the neighbour treating the cat well? Feeding it properly? Has it only been a day or two - if so are the neighbours okay?

If you feel the cat is being well looked after, I’d go and knock on the neighbours door and say I hope you don’t mind, your cat keeps crying at my door, just wanted to make sure you’re okay.

AuntyJackiesBrothersSistersBoy · 19/06/2018 10:08

You have been chosen. Live with it. 😆

Dobbythesockelf · 19/06/2018 10:09

Cats see it as a challenge if you don't like them. My neighbour doesn't like cats. Currently they have 2 cats sunbathing in their garden, the cats just seem to enjoy pissing them off. My mum's cat never sits on anyone's knee unless you don't like cats then she will jump down from her prized spot on the back of the sofa closest to the radiator and sit on you whether you like it or not. They are twats but I love them so.
Last night my dh removed our girl cat from the bedroom cause she was being annoying, she got back in when I went to pee and sat on his head. He needs to learn his place, which is literally beneath her.

🎶...But the cat came back the very next day...🎶

This is my husky...he thinks he’s a cat! He regularly jumps the fence and goes for a snooze in our neighbours hallway! Luckily she doesn’t mind!

QuestionableMouse
Calm down I could have done a lot worse. A defenceless email that could be riddled with fleas/worms and brings itself into my house to lie on my son's bed, if it had left before I came home a would never have known and my child would have been sleeping in that bed.

pinkgirl1234 · 19/06/2018 11:29

I don't think it's QuestionableMouse that needs to calm down...

Timeisslippingaway · 19/06/2018 11:32

pinkgirl1234
What is it then... 😂

Timeisslippingaway · 19/06/2018 11:35

Yes your right I should calm down, I shouldn't be annoyed in the slightest that other people's animals come into my house and sleep in my child's bed and god knows where else. Should really invite the daft thing in and feed it.... ok 😂

alligatorsmile · 19/06/2018 11:45

Cat haters hate cats because they're evil, unfriendly, greedy, selfish bastards with zero fucks given about you, your health or your mental state.

And cat lovers love cats for exactly the same reasons

I am housekeeper for two of our furry overlords. They are both bastards and I love them.

alligatorsmile · 19/06/2018 11:49

pinkgilr1234, that cat looks very much at home. And just slightly pissed off that the coffee you brought it is Colombian rather than Ethiopian, and was about 2 degrees sub the optimal temperature.

user1467976192 · 19/06/2018 11:51

You aren’t my neighbours are you? Had to get mine out of their garden this morning so she could go to the vets. She’s back there now
