New articlr in the guardian, going to read now, I'm sorry because shes generally really popular with all my female mates but...I just find her really annoying and disingenuous and anti-intellectual. Is it just me? Her (faux) grey streak also annoys me, as does the face pulling. Anyway i know its mean, but i just dont identify

*still results in gaping inequality (furious typing = spelling mistakes sorry)

ExtraTime · 16/06/2018 17:48

its a fast moving thread!

Tangled59 · 16/06/2018 17:52

@JobQuery
GG has said that accepting a part in a movie or a non disclosure worth 6 figures is essentially a form of consent and that you cannot now, decades later, having reaped certain rewards that came with those situations, seek to redress the balance. I agree, however unpopular that POV is.

Regarding rape, she is basically calling for a change of culture, which is what she has always worked towards, rather than more legislation that will only create yet more difficulties for women.

I think my point is at least she has points of view on serious stuff.

yeah KingThistle, putting it in shouty CAPITAL LETTERS especially if its the F WORD or C WORD or SWEARING in general in CASE PEOPLE Don't UNDERSTAND or ACCEPT YOUR VIEWS hopefully that will make things CLEARER and more CONVINCING for the hard of hearing or just plain thick, especially when in fact YOU ARE RUNNING OUT of INTELLECTUAL ENERGY or indeed ANY UNDERSTANDING of the real WORLD without SHOUTING PEOPLE DOWN.

Half of her book (the second half) How To Be A Woman was in this vein. Embarrassing and rubbish, but no doubt spawned another generation of apologetico-pseudo-feminists.

ExtraTime · 16/06/2018 18:00

But my time here is done most likely.

Time for a coffee and to move to "Baby left in a car in supermarket" thread.

Thanks OP for food for thought.

Have a good evening all.

DioneTheDiabolist · 16/06/2018 18:02

I enjoy reading her stuff and I like her. Just as I enjoy and like Mary Beard and Germaine Greer. The "Perfect Feminist" doesn't exist but every one has her own part to play and piece to contribute.

HolyMountain · 16/06/2018 18:10

Problematigue

Also as someone who grew up a bit council too

What's a 'bit' council?

you mean being working class and having to slum it?

MsJinglyJones · 16/06/2018 18:23

I thought GG's recent points about rape were very insightful and an attempt to really tackle the problem - but of course running massively counter to the prevailing mood, open to a lot of misinterpretation, and guaranteed to get her a kicking.

Being GG she's always happy to chuck a grenade into the middle of the debate - but the enormous difference between her and feminists like Caitlin Moran is that GG has thought it through, it is an attempt to dismantle and analyse what's really going on, and she can argue her case coherently.

GG reminds you how severe and serious misogyny is. CM does not!

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 16/06/2018 18:25

I liked what she said abiut homework 📚

I don’t get celeb baiting in here . It’s mean

If you don’t like someone surely don’t follow them . Starting a thread to get people to Agee is sooo mean girl

violetgrey · 16/06/2018 18:35

Spot on description of CM and SH from Kisbot!

EeebyMum · 16/06/2018 18:36

I remember her making a big deal about having a big hairy unwaxed bush but shaving all visible body-parts.
Yeah it points out to (esp younger) women that it’s your body and it can be as hairy as you like. But as a statement it’s so vanilla, feminism-lite.

IrenetheQuaint · 16/06/2018 18:42

Caitlin Moran is a lazy writer with an annoying prose style BUT she does fight feminism's corner in an easy to read way, so I am generally in favour of her in a lukewarm sort of way.

lynmilne65 · 16/06/2018 18:43

Broccoli 😁😁😁😁

Rainbunny · 16/06/2018 18:44

I don't mind her at all as a person and she seems as though she would be very nice to meet but... I do think she's been handed a career based on being a "precocious" teenage talent and later on as a feminist commentator, when she has only ever been perfectly average with average insights. Clearly I've never understood the fuss about her.

SlothSlothSloth · 16/06/2018 18:45

Indeed, Eeeby. And I do think all the obsessing over body hair is very much tackling a symptom of the problem rather than the root.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 16/06/2018 18:46

Starting a thread to get people to Agee is sooo mean girl. Really?
In that case should one start a thread to get folk to disagree, sooo not mean girl?
You seem to wholly miss the point of mn.post a thread, overall hope people agree
Folk don’t start threads in hope they’ll be vehemently disagreed with

SlothSlothSloth · 16/06/2018 18:47

I remember her making a big deal about having a big hairy unwaxed bush but shaving all visible body-parts.

And just to add that this is even less bold when you’ve been with your partner 10+ years. Her situation is not the same at all as that of teen girls who feel under pressure to be perfect hairless Barbie dolls for their hookups with porn-obsessed guys.

SlothSlothSloth · 16/06/2018 18:48

Calling people mean girls is sexist tbh.

MsJinglyJones · 16/06/2018 18:52

But actually generally people don't just agree. They give a range of views, often well put, sometimes they make the OP reconsider, or have an interesting debate.

CM is being defended on the thread by some, and most of those criticising her are doing that in a reasoned way, not just being mean girls.

MsJinglyJones · 16/06/2018 18:55

Are we allowed to criticise men in the public eye, or find them annoying? If we are, then saying we can't do that to women is to treat women as a special species who must be protected and always agreed with and never challenged. Bollocks to that.

Bookridden · 16/06/2018 19:50

I enjoy her writing and think she often has something interesting and relevant to say. Yes, she's been lucky, but it's luck fuelled by a real writing talent, which I envy. She's great. I also really like Hadley Freeman.

longtallwalker · 16/06/2018 20:25

I like her. She's self made and got where she is without the usual journalism connections.
I can't link to it right now but she wrote a lovely piece in the Times today about blood donation. Nail.
On. Head.
And the grey streak? Doesn't bother me. How is that different to the expensive 'natural' blonde of so many women?

MaisyPops · 16/06/2018 20:53

She has done well for herself.

I think one of my issues is she still tries to play the poor working class thing instead of getting into meaningful activism. It irritates me like wealthy celebrities on Comic Relief telling people to part with cash when the celeb could have given a huge amount and not flown to Tanzania to tell me to give money.
Instead of telling me you have pubic hair & sometimes buy tampons, can we talk about the motherhood penalty abd the fatherhood bonus?
