I took on the mantle to start another thread. If that is not allowed, Mods delete the thread, I am not sure of the protocol. But it certainly is an interesting discussion!

If allowed to stay as my OP, let's go!

Ghost of - you implied above that zero hours contracts are a feature of the uk govt. that implies they exist nowhere else.

If you don’t understand why rapid immigration into a medium size community is a problem then you do not have the imagination to understand the problem and have zero credibility on this thread

You really don’t understand why tens of millions voted leave do you

BoneyBackJefferson · 14/06/2018 21:56

GhostofFrankGrimes

You ignore the point that these people don't have anything to lose and its not getting any better in the EU. So for them taking a chance isn't as big as it is for you and me.

Frequency · 14/06/2018 21:57

I'd like to ask the people on the previous thread who said they thought things would be okay, prices would rise a little bit and people would be only slightly worse off for x amount of years but it would be worth it the long run what they think the people who already cannot afford to live, who are relying on foodbanks and charity or living in temp accommodation etc are going to do when prices 'rise a little bit' and they become 'slightly worse off'? Do you think they'll sit quietly home with an empty fridge and wait for all the good times to come?

Heyduggeesflipflop · 14/06/2018 21:58

Ah yes the food banks...

I think we have hit the remainer full house and it’s only page 6

No it doesn't. The EU do not control wage levels of member states. So zero hour contracts will still exisit post Brexit. Using it as an excuse to vote leave is naive.

There is already fruit rotting in the fields because migrants are leaving. You don't understand labour markets, demographics or economics.

AnneElliott · 14/06/2018 21:59

Keyboard - Theresa May has not held the post of Foreign Secretary - she was Home Secretary.

The impact assessments show that leave voting areas will be worst affected by Brexit. They gambled, they will lose.

Are food banks a myth? I'm not sure I understand your point? It is pretty much universally accepted by both sides that things will get worse before they get better from what I can see, so I don't think asking about those who can't afford for things to get worse is wrong.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 14/06/2018 22:01

Our working class hero sneers at food banks...

Heyduggeesflipflop · 14/06/2018 22:02

Ghost of - I think it’s fair to say you understand the price of everything and the value of nothing

jasjas1973 · 14/06/2018 22:03

Where are the runs on the banks, the riots on the streets and the army deployed nationally? Those are the real hallmarks of a failing state, not your fictional account that is impossible to meaningfully separate from routine economic activity

Nah, the world economy is on the up, except us.
btw RR, Maplin, BHS, Toys r us, H of F even Poundland are not fictional and as i never once mentioned a failing state, you are possibly suffering from paranoid delusions too? :) try an stick to what posters actually write.

Bit bloody rich coming from our resident Tory. Sold off the family silver in the 80's didn't ya?

Prior to migrants picking the fruit the jobs would be done by the locals.
A migrant workforce was brought in because it was cheaper than paying the locals the money as the migrants worked in gangs under gang leaders that pocketed a large amount of the money.
The gangs themselves live in HMOs reducing their costs and enabling them to send send any spare cash home.
The farmers were happy as they paid less out for the pickers
The gang managers were happy as they got paid a decent amount
The gangs were passably happy because although they worked long hours they provided for their families.
The shops were happy as they got cheap fruit
The government was happy as they still got the taxes.
The only people that weren't happy were the locals who had to find other other jobs.

Now we are at a stage were the locals don't want to do it because its long hours, hard work and shit pay.

Jasjas

Sorry - clearly deciphered your tale of woe incorrectly

Ghost of - hope you are one of those grotty old socialists - if you are under 25 I fear for this once proud country

Heyduggeesflipflop · 14/06/2018 22:09

Ghost of - actually I’m selfmade, so to speak. Daddy drove vans. Perhaps if you applied yourself you could get on in life too

MongerTruffle · 14/06/2018 22:10

History repeating. Sadly.

It seems to be yet another case of people wanting to go back to last century: never going abroad, using only two squares of toilet paper and only having strawberries in June.

To wonder how many of you are ready for hard Brexit now

Fruit and veg farmers facing migrant labour shortages

www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-40354331

"We operate in areas of such low unemployment, so here in Cambridgeshire, it's less than 1.5%," she said.

"So there simply aren't the people available to do the work, added to which UK people tend to want permanent year-round work and this is seasonal work.'

All out of argument, resort to personal insults.

keyboardkate · 14/06/2018 22:12

@AnneElliot,

My apologies re the nomenclature . Mea Culpa.

Doesn't change my view. TM had the power to curb immigration but chose not to insist on the rules.

But is now insisting on Brexit to curb immigration. Well that is what Brexit is all about isn't it.

So what are the growers doing to encourage a UK workforce?

Did you read the article? Unemployment in the area was low thus they needed migrant workers. Unemployment is low nationwide. Their are skills shortages in the likes of the NHS. Migrant workers are vital for our health care, farming, hospitality.

jasjas1973 · 14/06/2018 22:24

Sorry - clearly deciphered your tale of woe incorrectly

Not really, you are just being argumentative.

the facts i listed on job losses on the high street, RR, who pays the taxes and how these people voted are in dispute, well, only with you.

Of course, i m sure the RR manager/engineer etc on 45k who will now serve you in Tesco and claim a shed load of in work benefits is a fair exchange or maybe he can pick veg? or lets bring back the post brexit work house?

jasjas1973 · 14/06/2018 22:24

not in dispute, it should read.

mrsreynolds · 14/06/2018 22:26

How long do you think it will be before JRM et al suggest workhouses??
