To be excited about the World Cup starting!

I know FIFA and Russia and whoever is involved is horrible in some way... But it's the actual World Cup. Mexico v South Korea suddenly becomes hugely important to my life! England have a likeable squad and manager. Ronaldo, Messi, Neymar. Spain sacking their manager yesterday.

It's so exciting isn't it!

Exactly. If Scotland, or N Ireland was the only nation to qualify, it would still be covered a LOT.

derxa · 15/06/2018 07:07

There was plenty of talk about Wales during the Euros 2 years ago. It was mainly plucky little Wales type dialogue.
I'm watching GMB at the moment. Kate Garroway is talking about 'our' build up to the game on Monday. There is an intermittent strap line about Marcus Rashford's return to training.

derxa · 15/06/2018 07:12

Exactly. If Scotland, or N Ireland was the only nation to qualify, it would still be covered a LOT. But there would be a different slant. Kate Garroway wouldn't be talking about 'our build up'.

BitOutOfPractice · 15/06/2018 07:23

Honestly I think there's a lot of shoulder chippery about this. Seeing stuff that's not there. It's really quite as dull as the ABE folk find the 1966 stuff.

BitOutOfPractice · 15/06/2018 07:24

I mean, no other nation that's not qualified expects special "mention us" treatment. I find it a bit odd tbh.

user1471517900 · 15/06/2018 07:24

A Scottish presenter would though. Of course an English presenter will use "our" for England.

I do agree though that if there is a game featuring two other teams, I do not want to hear the phrase "England camp" at half time. No need (and it's usually some dull info anyway).

Egypt, Iran and Portugal wins today please.

DrCoconut · 15/06/2018 07:30

No interest whatsoever here. I don't care who wins it.

user1471517900 · 15/06/2018 07:37

If Scotland had qualified and they had Ally McCoist on, then you'd hear him say "we" a lot in reference to Scotland. There will be more focus on the home nations (as someone said, Wales got this too a couple of years ago).

We are doing this for Britain and we're gonna do or die. Scotland cannae dae it coz they didnae qualify.

Great words there.

Anyway back to today's games!

I can't even stand the sound of it, luckily no one in our household follows it.

derxa · 15/06/2018 07:54

If Scotland had qualified and they had Ally McCoist on He would be a pundit not a presenter.

Andrewofgg · 15/06/2018 07:56

Remember the sketch before the last World Cup?

Interviewer in street to random: Who do you reckon for the World Cup?

Jock: Scotland.

Interviewer: But they did not qualify.

Jock: Aye, but that’s when they are at their most dangerous!

I have been hearing rumours that Egypt have other players in their squad apart from Salah. Nothing confirmed yet but I wanted MN to get the scoop first.

It will be interesting to see just how much analysis is devoted to Morocco v Iran and how much to the Spain game or England camp later....

I know nothing of Morocco or Iran in terms of football.

OP posts:
BitOutOfPractice · 15/06/2018 10:10

I'll be supporting Morocco as I've been there.

Then I'll be supporting Portugal as my club team manager is Portuguese and I loves him a lot.

IamaBluebird · 15/06/2018 11:51

You had a good season Bit. I like a trip to your ground.

gluteustothemaximus · 15/06/2018 12:30

Football used to be good. England used to be worth watching.

Football in the 90’s. Now that was exciting.

It’s being hosted in Russia, and what with Russia being corrupt and all...I’ll give it a miss, thanks.

BelfastBloke · 15/06/2018 14:37

The Tv stations would hire more Scots/Irish/Welsh pundits and presenters.

Ian Wright always says ‘we’ when analysing Arsenal. I used to think he shouldn’t do that, but now I think ‘more of this sort of thing’.

I take it you'll be doing the same for Qatar?

gluteustothemaximus · 15/06/2018 14:52

I take it you'll be doing the same for Qatar?

Yes, I will.

Amanduh · 15/06/2018 14:58

Uruguay were poor today.. had them as a threat, but not after that

ToffeeUp · 15/06/2018 15:17

Yes they were bad but I can't see them having much trouble with Russia and Saudi.
