To believe that kids sat inside supermarket trolleys is disgusting

Just that really.
Never allowed my DC to do it.

I think it is gross that some guardians allow children to sit amongst the groceries in the supermarket trolley.
Makes me shudder that they could have dog shit or other unmentionables on their outside footwear. This would contaminate their shopping and the next unsuspecting persons. I also think it's dangerous having a kid hanging off the edge of a trolley. Pisses me off to see this. Am I alone?

I work in a supermarket, and have seen a couple of nasty finger bangs

YABU
Their legs come out of the front of the trolley so nowhere near the food...
Also the trolleys probably aren't exactly clean? Surely you wash your veg before eating it.

JumbleJamba · 11/06/2018 09:01

The trolley is not safe, in the event of a fire you abandon the trolley and get your backside outside (many flammable items). Stopping to haul a child out is wasting time and may be in the way of other people.

Wait, what? This is one of the most ludicrous things I have ever read on Mumsnet. Are children not people then?

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 11/06/2018 09:03

YANBU, not particularly from a hygiene point of view but just from a lazy point of view. That's why we're getting a nation of overweight kids - the little darlings aren't allowed to walk anywhere. Get your kids to behave in a public place if they are liable to run around.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 11/06/2018 09:05

I did it a couple of times when DD was a toddler but always took her shoes off. Disgusting otherwise. I bet the people who let their kids in the trolleys with shoes on are the same who let them watch phones/ tablets without headphones in GP’s or activities waiting rooms Grin

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 11/06/2018 09:06

fabric I think the OP means children sitting inside the big trolleys; their shoes are defintely not hanging out.

spiderplantsgalore · 11/06/2018 09:08

What's with all the 'Bonkers' and 'Give your head a wobble'?

I'm not that bothered but I know several people who get very annoyed about it, so the OP is far from alone.

lynmilne65 · 11/06/2018 09:09

Get a life

HairyToity · 11/06/2018 09:10

I allow this. I don't see the issue, but I'm not anal over germs.

ScattyCharly · 11/06/2018 09:10

I don’t like it either op. Have been in a Tesco where a child fell out of a trolley (the grocery compartment, not the child seat). Those supermarket floors are seriously hard and the crack the child’s head made on it was hideous. As well as that, yes I do think it’s dirty for a kid’s shoes to be in a grocery compartment. Dog shit on the street is the biggest complaint made to councils. It’s all over the place. Kids’ shoes are often grim so yes, it is dirty to treat a communal trolley like this.

Fabricwitch · 11/06/2018 09:10

DrinkFeckArseGirls
I thought that until she said the hanging out part? And I've never seen kids sitting in the actual trolley along with all the food...
Confused

BWatchWatcher · 11/06/2018 09:11

I agree. The OP needs to focus on other things.
Like Brexit for example. What is your solution for the Irish border problem OP?

paxillin · 11/06/2018 09:12

The next shopper isn't that unsuspecting, everyone sees children in trolleys. You also don't know if the last shopper didn't have uncooked meat in the spot you are putting your apples, so have to wash stuff anyway.

BWatchWatcher · 11/06/2018 09:12

(Cows and birds shit on the border, so vile and uncouth).

WickedLazy · 11/06/2018 09:18

I used to be work on checkouts in tesco, fyi, the tills can be filthy. There are often crumbs and bits of loose food stuck under the scales etc. Any food that isn't packaged, like fruit, should be bagged up and washed when you get home. And agree with how dirty the handles on shopping trolleys must be, you should maybe think about gloves...

WickedLazy · 11/06/2018 09:18

*I used to work on

BottleOfJameson · 11/06/2018 09:24

Like PP have said if food isn't in packaging then doesn't everyone assume it will be dirty and wash it at home? God knows where it's been on the way to the supermarket!

MamaMiapartytime · 11/06/2018 09:26

Please don't put your child inside a trolley. Used to to the accident compensation for a major supermarket. The injuries were horrific from children in trollies- life changing injury to the face. They didnt get compensation as it was their fault most of the time.

Willow2017 · 11/06/2018 09:30

in the event of a fire you abandon the trolley and get your backside outside (many flammable items). Stopping to haul a child out is wasting time and may be in the way of other people

I presume that means we should also abandon our kids actually strapped into the seats in trolleys or in car seats clipped on top of trollies so not to 'inconvenience' other 'people' who are obviously more important?

How bloody ridiculous.

Pinkyponkcustard · 11/06/2018 09:32

Ooh there’s a lot of judgypantsness on this thread.

Aworldofmyown · 11/06/2018 09:39

I agree, trollies are for food in supermarkets. Not children.

They have a seat - use that.

MamaMiapartytime · 11/06/2018 09:39

Ooh there’s a lot of judgypantsness on this thread.

Maybe if you had seen a child who had lost the bottom part of their lip or one with a pierced mouth palette you might be judgy too! Not to mention the severed fingers and broken limbs.

Sirzy · 11/06/2018 09:53

What worries me is that a lot of the parents who (understandably) do it say it’s because they can’t be trusted not to run off - in that case how can they be trusted to stay sat still and not risk falling or tipping the trolley?

Ohyesiam · 11/06/2018 09:55

Try not to
Look or think about it and your life would be happier. If you want to be disgusted by something read about child sex exploitation, that is disgusting.

frasier · 11/06/2018 09:56

Well said Ohyesiam

First world problems hey?
