To believe that kids sat inside supermarket trolleys is disgusting

Just that really.
Never allowed my DC to do it.

I think it is gross that some guardians allow children to sit amongst the groceries in the supermarket trolley.
Makes me shudder that they could have dog shit or other unmentionables on their outside footwear. This would contaminate their shopping and the next unsuspecting persons. I also think it's dangerous having a kid hanging off the edge of a trolley. Pisses me off to see this. Am I alone?

No, I mean it's allowed. Retailers sometimes allow it on their premises. They do. Your views about the obnoxiousness or otherwise of the people who are being prima facie permitted makes no difference to this state of affairs.

And 'not energetically enforced' is not an accurate description of what I'm talking about either. I'm talking about it not being enforced at all, as well of course as there sometimes not being anything on the trolleys at all.

Strugglingtodomybest · 12/06/2018 10:49

My kids are too old now but back in the day I let them sit in the trolley providing they stayed still. We did it purely for the fun of it.

They wouldn’t dream of letting their kids on a trampoline without a net or on a bike without a helmet

I let them do these things too, so sorry pp, I'll need to claim that world's worst parent award from you Grin

Lethaldrizzle · 12/06/2018 10:59

I've seen kids bust their heads open falling off swings. Shall we ban them too?

Strugglingtodomybest · 12/06/2018 11:15

I've only ever seen a burst head after a fall at a swimming pool. Ban them too!

Thank you OP for educating me on how to be a decent parent I am sure other posters are amazed at your levels of knowledge and expertize if you have any more great advice and lots of spare time on your hands please feel free to message me I would be very grateful

SableStar · 12/06/2018 11:27

It isn’t allowed. I work in a supermarket and the guards will tell you to remove your child.
What should be fixed is the demand for trolleys for shoppers needing additional seats / help with people with SN.
Parents with more than one small child etc...
Then, it would be safer all round.

happymummy12345 · 12/06/2018 11:27

I don't like children sat in the actual trolley. The seat fine.

Help *for

Biscusting · 12/06/2018 11:49

Quite a few of our local supermarket trolleys don't have a seat belt thing. My two year old just stands constantly, so sometimes it's the safer option.

Does anyone else love the mumsnet obsession with poo and trolleys? No other potential contaminants, just poo. Whenever i go to the shop now, I imagine hundreds of animals running to the trolley shelter and furiously shitting all over them as soon as my back is turned.

Ohsuchaperfectday · 12/06/2018 11:52

No not at all it's been since trollies invented. I don't have raw exposed food sitting in trolly.. It's far easier to shop with children in one.. I can't get worked up about it

MrsOprah · 12/06/2018 12:01

I agree with you @OP

OurMiracle1106 · 12/06/2018 12:49

What about the warehouses with rats and vermin in? Peeing on cans etc?? Ever thought of The hygiene of the trucks it comes in on or what it may have contact with?

DottyBlue2 · 12/06/2018 14:52

I put Prince George in the supermarket trolley today and wheeled him round while I did the shopping. But then I got told to leave the premises. It wasn't even Fortnums

m0therofdragons · 12/06/2018 15:17

Did anyone come up with how parents of twins or young ones close together are supposed to shop? I'm talking non-walkers so do we push trolley with one hand and double buggy with the other? Would take up the whole aisle and be a nightmare for everyone including the stressed out parent. Is that really better than a child being in the trolley?

Our local Lidl now has 3 double trolleys which is great but what should my friend do as she has triplets?

Why don't you order online then you don't need to stress about shoes on trolleys? (I'm also confused how clean people actually think the fruit is before they put it in the trolley)

Battleax · 12/06/2018 15:21

I’m a bit surprised that there’s a shortage of double seaters TBH.

When my eldest two were pre schoolers (one year apart) I always used them and can’t ever remember any trouble finding one.

I don’t notice the doubles now because I only have one tiny but I’ll keep an eye out, because I’m curious now. Maybe there’s a concrete reason behind the apparent shortage.

m0therofdragons · 12/06/2018 15:56

In Somerset only Morrisons had them. Tesco had a few but they all got stolen (was what I was told when trying to find one) and Asda had 5. Lidl only got theirs after our local twins club campaigned to head office. Is it really that hard to believe?

WaxOnFeckOff · 12/06/2018 16:08

I'm same as you Battleaxe, I had two 13 months apart and never had an issue finding them. Unfortunately my giant DC didn't fit in them for very long as they seemed unable to bend at the knee sufficiently to get their legs in Confused. I never put them in the basket of the trolly though. If I had to take them shopping with me, they either walked round or one sat in the buggy and the other stood on buggy board and I carried a basket or put a few bits on the hood. I never had a double buggy either. I was luckily in a position where I could leave the big shop to DH or go when he had DC or order on-line and also had very compliant DC. DS2 was a bit of a bolter at times so needed a firm grip if he was in that mood.

I think a campaign for more suitable trollies for those that need them is definitely a good idea though. I do think that sometimes some people don't consider other options when they don't really need to put DC in the trolly. It just becomes a habit I suppose.

Battleax · 12/06/2018 16:10

. Is it really that hard to believe?

Yes it’s appalling. What can possibly have changed so much in 15 years?

Battleax · 12/06/2018 16:10

Agreed.

radicalaspect · 12/06/2018 16:11

Now you mention it op it is a bit grim I hadn't though of it before!

Mmest75 · 12/06/2018 17:31

YABU ... I assume you’ve never read what’s in train seats? Grin

Glittertrauma · 12/06/2018 17:32

You are literally the reason some kids have no immune systems and grow up allergic to everything Wink

I think its unfair to blame Dave for the pubes Thehop, it could have been, Dan, Roy, Steve, Brian.....they all scratch ;-)

DustyMaiden · 12/06/2018 17:38

I am thinking of starting a charity to protect Dave's. They are blamed for everything and the butt of all jokes.
